No reply in the forum yet.  Has anyone contacted BigStock admin?

As I mentioned earlier ... the forum is the last place to look. ;D

I found this an  interesting read on microstock diaries.  A few differing opinions from some of the big names in the microstock business.

http://www.microstockdiaries.com/selling-the-same-stock-photos-at-different-prices.html

I don't have a problem with the difference in prices between the various microstock sites and the lower range midstock sites but so far I have resisted uploading my microstock photos to alamy.  They don't seem concerned but I am wary of losing buyers if they see the same images being sold at a fraction of the price.  Perhaps I need to think again.

Prices for the same item at different business is nothing new or disturbing. Case in point Wal Mart sells an item for $ 3.88 and the little store down the street sells the same item for $ 7.50. Buyers must learn to shop as we do everyday.

Y'know we're all here just playing ping pong and no one is any wiser about what Larry 's asking.  Did you get any answer from BigStock , Lcj?

I checked the BigStock site upside down and backwards ..... no answers yet. I checked their forum also and someone else is asking the same question there and has not gotten an answer either.

One of these days we may have the mystery solved.  ;D

thanks everyone for your participation.  The card is off to the printers today.  I would post a sample image of it, but I think I will make you all come to UGCX instead!

OK leaf, so when is your pilot and chauffeur coming to pick me up in Halifax?  And what is the dress code for the occasion? smoking ?   :D

Do you think Leaf is trying to bribe us?  ;D

DT automatically raises prices on images based on demand. I like this. But I do not like the idea of making some contributors superior to others in a hierarchy. That is a lot of what is wrong at IS, I think. Let everyone play on a level playing field and each image be judged on its own merits.

Can you name the sites "with a level playing field?" ... and I will start uploading to them.

I won't hold my breath. ;D ;D

« on: January 26, 2009, 09:28 »
C'mon Fred, etc... do you honestly think that BigStock is the only one who give certain contributors preferential treatment?    Look around and make a note of who gets Editor's Choice,etc...  Friends, partners,etc... do get the white glove EVERYWHERE.
Not just BigStock. Please, don't be naive!

LMAO, i can see Tuilay's list to "HOW TO GET 100% APPROVAL IN STOCK AND BE ON THE FRONT PAGE":
1) use your entertainment expense well.
2) get email addresses of reviewers (better still, the owners)
3) invite reviewer(s)/owner(s) out for bangers and ale
4) propose to reviewer(s)/owner(s) if hot looking
5) make reviewer(s)/owner(s) take oath to secrecy of association

Hmm? Tuilay??? ;D ;D ;D (just kidding, taking a jab for all your previous flippancy).

Hali,
I'm glad your just kidding about Tuilay's post! (Side note: Tuilay gets it right most of the time!) But the fact is, if you want to be favored by reviewers or site owners, you must brown nose them at all times. If you "speak" negatively, even if it is 100% true facts, you get on the "Crap" list and you are treated accordingly.

I know this to be a fact. I'm on the Crap list.

Do you ever approach a stranger and tell them you think you could make some quality photos with them? If they agree would you ask for them to sign a release in exchange send them some of the best pictures?

One time only. About 20 years ago I saw a young Asian man with a mustash that hung down about 5 inches below his face, I though his face was unique and would make for some great shots. I offered him $20.00 and photos for a release. I was with my wife at the time and he flatly said, "hell no, I'm not gay are you?" I never asked another stranger before or since.

 ..... and I never will again!  ;D

I've already read the description Larry.  It's a Premium Collection.  BigStock is not opening up the doors to let anyone start re-pricing their images.  The images in the Premium Collection are priced at the contributor's discretion, but that is the extent of it.  Unless one of your images is selected as "Premium," you will not have the opportunity to re-price anything.  No one will.

The questions to ask (which I just did in their forum) are -

Who will be eligible to submit to the Premium Collection?
Can any submission be marked as "Premium" by an inspector?
Will existing uploads be eligible to become "Premium"?  I highly doubt that.

It looks to me like they are doing what has already been done at several other sites, and started a special collection.  Nothing else is going on.  I'm a little perplexed as to why they have not mentioned anything about it however.

Another big question: WHO will decide if the images CAN be sold as premium?

-Larry

Price your own images are already on BigStock. I could not find any information on the BigStock site as to how to do it or who can do it. I only found it on one photographers profile. The photographer is Andres an excellent photographer by any standards.

There is nothing in Andres' collection to suggest he priced his images.  The "P" is in reference to "Premium Collection."  Although I cannot find any information on a BigStock Premium Collection, apparently they are following the industry trend and starting one.  And it looks obvious that Andres was one of the first invited to have his images in this Premium Collection.

Click on one of his images to see image details. You will notice a "P" in a blue circle and a notation Premium Image and next to that is a question mark (?) click on it to get a lesson on how it was priced. (by the photographer) and amounts to less than 1 % of the images on BigStock.

Check it out and come back!

Thanks,
Larry

I googled and Found one of my Free Images that I never gave away! At least I do not remember ever giving it away.

Larry, I do see what you mean. in the google search under your image it does say free photos, but when I click that it takes me to your BigStock page, where you must purchase it for credits. Not sure why it says free in the search, but I don't think they are giving it away for free. I could be wrong though.

You and Adelaide are both most likely correct on this.

Thanks a bunch to both of you.

Larry,

I think "Royalty free" may have trigged the result in Google.

Still no reply in the forum.

Regards,
Adelaide

You may be correct on this. I do not know.

On the link posted previously, go to it again and at the top of the page click on "Back to image results" and you will see the original google page. My image is in the bottom row near the center.

Thanks!

He has several hundred images on his port that he priced.

The photos are identified by a light blue P in a circle on the thumbnails.

Check his Newest Images to see them.

I found the prices up to 90 credits for a 13.7mp image (photo ID# 4328828)

Does anybody know anything about this?

No info on BigStock and nothing on their forum either.

It doesn't appear as free to me.  I see the credits per size.

It is listed on the google search as a free image, but not on the link. You could do the google search yourself and find it. Search for Milwaukee skyline.

Larry,

I saw that, but I think a previous announcement by email would have been nice, plus the "free images" is not really understood.

I've asked in their forum.

Adelaide

I found the answer for you. Log in and go to ALERTS area on your account.

I blame sagging sales on three things:

First: the economy
Second: sub sales. Once a buyer has 20-30,000 images saved. How many more would they need?
Third: Everyone with a camera in the world is entering stock. If everyone is selling them who is left to buy them? ;D

Oh ... one more thing. No images on any site should be sold for less than $10.00 per dl. If every micro site raised their prices to that amount .... they would still sell and photographers would make money.

Right now if you really want to make money in photography .... shoot weddings! I retired years ago from shooting weddings and in my best years made over $250,000.00 per year after paying my helpers. (Helpers: 5 freelance photographers.)

Nuff said.

Oh well... apparently not too significant! Thanks for the feedback  :D

The search order is significant!

Quality does not mean quality! It means the reviewers oppionion of the image and it does determine its order in the search! Excellent in front and OK to the back.

If you was a buyer would you buy any of the Good or OK images if they were all the same price as the excellent ones? Not me! And they are all the same price. It's like offering fresh eggs or rotten eggs to a buyer and the price is the same! Stupid!

This image was rated "Excellent"

Five or six days later I uploaded 5 more with different wording otherwise exactly the same quality. (Image quality) They were rated "OK"
A little later I uploaded 6 more and they were rated "Good"

So the Quality rating does not mean image quality, it is only the oppinion of the reviewer and in my oppionion hurts BigStock sales. The rating can stay if they want it but it should not be part of the search, so that you or I cannot see it.

Complaints to BigStock fall on deft ears.

As far as your example goes, to each his own... I guess  :)

I did submit an image once of profane graffiti and it was rejected everywhere except Bigstock.  I consider them to be the most liberal of all the sites.

Rejection reasons from other sites: not suitable as stock, too vulgar (or something like that from more than one) and then of course your regular noise, lighting, whatever...

Your most liberal notation made me laugh! BigStock is the most Conservative of all the micro sites! Check out the nudes and use a bunch of "dirty" key words with that category and you will quickly see which sites are liberal in fact in my oppionion some are pure porn! Example: a strand of pearls strung between a woman's legs full nude and everything exposed.... This is art? Of commercial value?

Your rejected images may have been rejected for reasons other than the content of the photo.

BigStock's requirements for nudes: No images containing fully exposed buttocks, genitals, fully exposed female breasts or female nipples. Partial nudity is allowed most times.

Canon / Re: Buying a Refurbished Canon 5D
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:35 »
Adorama is selling a refurbished by Canon which should work like new. Check with Canon for warranty details.

B&H is selling a Used camera in excellent condition at a higher price than the Canon Refurbished.

I would buy the Adorama camera even if no additional warranty was available.

In my oppinion Refurbished by Canon beats Used even if excellent.

Whenever I have had problems with the Multi Image Up-loader it was due to BigStock refreshing all or part of the site. Give it a half hour break and try again. Always works for me this way.
