General Stock Discussion / Re: Uploading Strategies
« on: March 01, 2008, 17:33 »
Queues are fickle little beasts.  It's never stable, so it's nearly impossible to gauge when a batch will be approved and go live online.  All you can really do is cross your fingers and hope for the best, because the process isn't always instantaneous or predictable.

Contributors at any given time never know how long the queue is, how many submissions are ahead of it, if there is a shortage of reviewers due to illness/vacation/time off, if there has been a surge in uploads, etc.  There are also other factors involved, like the time between the review to when the images show up in your portfolio to actually going live for the buyers.  Sometimes the servers go down.  A lot of reviewers work only on the weekends, so the chances your images will be reviewed on the weekend might actually be higher.  As you can see, there's a lot of things that can prevent uploading strategies from working.

Again I cannot agree with you.

I'm uploading for year and a half on SS , almost always on same day and I know exactly almost in hours when will they get reviewed , and when will approved stuff show up in search engine.  As I recall they messed up once or twice in all that time so you dont have to be  Nostradamus for that.

It a proof that it can be done , probably on every site , but some of them are taking that part more seriously than others.

When a batch is ready to go, I upload it to all the sites at the same time.  End of story.  Most photos on most sites never get viewed right away anyway, so it really doesn't matter when they are uploaded.  And since I upload new batches several times a week, waiting for a specific day for a specific site would seriously impact my workflow.

I don't agree.

If your images gets aproved on SS on late Friday and during the weekend , not only that you are loosing large percent of downloads you will probably get if they were approved on Monday but your images are sinking in the "most popular" search  so they get pushed back faster and you are again loosing downloads that images could get in the later stage.

My personal opinion is that if an Image gets approved there on Saturday the chances of becoming "popular" are reduced.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Prices reduced......
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:59 »
That sucks for many reasons

But lets compare that to any other business. Any huge store that wants to discount a product has to do that paying their share of the cut. What does a milk producer care about a store discount ? He has his price and as he is concerned they can give his milk for free after  they pay him his share.

Not quite right a lot of store promotions are normally at the cost of the vendor, if the store pays 60 for an Item that normally sells at 99, they do not pay the same in the 20% off sale, the vendor reduces the cost.

The milk Vendors contract will be so tight that they have no choice but to supply at the lower cost, and on a sale or return basis, if the want to supply the store, this de-risks the store for losses.

It will be written into the Istock agreement somewhere that Istock set the sales price and you get the percentage of that, and that they have the right to move the price point either way.

These are the rules of business and contributors are blinded by the "Member of the Community" on Istock that they forget that they are the vendor and Istock is a merchant / agent that protects its margin, often at the cost of the Vendor.

Stock is a fantastic business model, vendors supply the goods at no cost, you then dictate the sales price, you set and protect your margin and the amount you return to the vendor, based on the number of units sold.

Yippie I want to be a stock merchant!  ;D

You are wrong , you are talking about promotional  price not a discount , thats a supplier good will and his business decision  to promote his brand of milk products , and has nothing to do with a store discount. He could be promoting his product in many stores where he sells his milk , at the same time , and the primarily goal is  promoting his milk brand , not the name of the store that sells his milk. Its his decision and so it is payed from his part of the cut. The store cant force someone to promote his product.

Then I never said that istock has no legal rights to do what they are doing ,I only said that I don't feel thats fair to contributors , and as I saw on the istock forum, lots of contributors feel that way.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Big changes
« on: February 26, 2008, 09:16 »
There are some big changes coming to the site. Check out the post by Duncun:

Highly Tightened Submission Standards & Criteria
Quality Over Quantity
Starting very shortly we will be drastically changing how many images we accept, and what standards we hold them to.We will be only accepting the best of the best. For comparisons sake, our image standards will similar to some rights-managed agencies. We will be very selective and will only accept the highest quality images. All photos should appear to be shot in a professional environment, with professional equipment

Questions, comments?

Duncan

Rights managed standards for 0.75$ , only best of the best will be accepted.
O wait , don't forget subscriptions sales on site.

If so , then why are they not taking a turn with prices also and get closer to midstock waters ?

They get 80% , and they still want to make experimental decisions that involve cutting our 20% ?

And in the end the thing that hurts most is the way to do that , and the ironic topic on their forums , and how the thing ends , the discount is officially  announced , so everything is clear now. LOCK.

How many sales of one image are you likely to need to get into the top 50?

Last of my images that got in there had about 30 or so , but it was long ago , maybe now you will need more.

Thanks for response, Lizard!
Indeed I'm having P&S camera with good zoom 12x it's Dimage Z3.
Would you mind to tell where such photographs are sold better or there are no real difference?

Hm , I think I noticed that maybe on Fotolia Im getting quite a few XS downloads , and they are not uncommon on IS too , but I think there is not some noticeable difference between the sites.

Well , I guess you are certainly having hard time shooting stock with 4mp camera , especially If you are using point and shot and shooting jpeg. You have to loose too much time processing your photos , dealing with noise problems etc.

Few years ago , you would be fine , but standards are much higher now and its hard to push photos to picky sites.

I don't know about others , but most of my work that sells is at least 6 mp and up. I do sell low res and they make probably about 20% or so , of all my sells , but on most sites such sell brings you few times less than higher resolution downloads.

« on: February 15, 2008, 23:09 »
I will try to convince  you again , try with  3-4 interesting textures , you cant go wrong  there , noise is almost invisible , and on SS they don't reject photos for "we have too much of those " reasons.

Again , avoid skies , especially avoid processing images with sky , don't take unnecessary risk.

Good luck

« on: February 12, 2008, 14:26 »
So, guys, despite Yingyang's suggestion (the Intuo$ wa$ out of que$tion to me), I got my Bamboo Fun today.  Haven't tried it yet, was only drooling over it - it looks cool, even if not a good piece of equipment!  ;)

Regards,
Adelaide

Hi Adelide.

May I ask you a question please

I bought bamboo fun for my kid brother and shipped it to him ( he lives in another town)  and now he called me and claims that photoshop elements is not in the box when he opened it or he cant find it.

I never opened the box , but he says that he got one black drivers cd , one white artrage 2 cd.

Before I call the shop I just want to check if PS elements is hidden somewhere in those two , or there is a third CD missing.

Thanks

You probably done your search  based on downloads number not best match.

Firstly it is not that he is selling something that bothers me, it's not the way he keeps posting threads that then drives traffic to his own website, it's not even the adverts or any referral links on the websites that bothers me.

What bothers me is the titles such as "Some SUPER SECRET Techniques Revealed for the first time here" when in actual fact they are not secret and they are not new.

Firstly , who forces you to read or to watch ?

Secondly , did you thought that maybe some newbie or a person with less knowledge than you claim to have , is learning about blending modes , levels , curves etc , and probably find his tutorial useful ?

Maybe even someone heard about burn tool or blend if option from miz for the first time.

I can consider my knowledge above the level of most of his tutorials , but I watch them still sometimes,  I find that we do same thing in a different way , but I find his less complicated.

If I was starting to learn I would find them exactly like the title of his post are

Than again , maybe you are one angry bookseller  ;D

Cameras / Lenses / Re: The 1$ tripod replacement
« on: January 30, 2008, 19:32 »
I use something similar when  I find myself without a tripod , a trick that an older photographer showed me once.

Probably most of you know the trick but just in case.

The technique works in almost same way as this one showed , but you use your cameras neck strap.

Hands position is normal , the strap is around your neck like normal , you have to put your right elbow on the strap from bellow ,and with your left hand that holds your camera you are pushing the camera up so the strap is tense. Its a bit complicated to describe the position but Im sure if you google a bit you wil find it.

By the way photographers borrowed that technique from army snipers , that were using their gun straps in same way.

what?! Is this about making money or your love and ability to create images?

They said this would happen, everything good in my life would soon be capitalized on, and made commercial.
(I just recently found out that the tooth Fairy were my parents. I'm devastated)

Be well, and make a lot of money if that's what floats your boat,
The MIZ

Miz this is probably the first time I don't agree with you.

I say microstock is mostly about money , at least I see it that way. Of course you can be creative , you can give your love to that job , but metaphorically " you have to leave some space for text on your image".

Of course we all love doing this , especially comparing it with a full time job when some boss is hanging over your shoulders whole day , but what makes difference between art and all other  things in your life is are few  simple words like  must , rules, standards , etc , and you will find those words in microstock but not in art.

Most people will never sell their best work in such commercial waters , and there are few more ways of expressing your love and ability to create images beside microstock.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime not good!
« on: January 29, 2008, 19:34 »

Well , all I can tell from this , is that someone may have keyword spamming , had  a warning , didn't want to edit his keywords and first of all had not read user agreement before accepting it ( no that i like that part of agreement ).

Then in the lack of arguments he started to pull insults with nationality in the background , that I found of extreme low taste.

That may have happened
