 I see what you mean. Interesting project, looking forward to seeing the result. :)
How about a tree growing out of a head?

The engineer union in Norway did a similar campain, they used one of these trees inside a light bulb. That worked.

Do they have model releases for these pics?

Zeus, I totally get what you are saying about different types of pictures, quality in the eyes of the beholder etc and so on. The microstock pics are too uniform, and the variety of macro is still needed. But honestly, that toilet sign and some of those christmas photos; those are not good. I don't understand how anybody can disagree on that.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Fair trade logo
« on: September 15, 2010, 15:39 »
If you can opt out of distributors, it is ok in my eyes.

No implications, it is only a badge that shows that this company is fair to photographers. There are no implications with fair trade coffee either; you don't have to prove you are a good guy to be allowed to drink it.

General Stock Discussion / Fair trade logo
« on: September 15, 2010, 15:27 »
I'm no designer, so I don't know; but is it very difficult to make fair trade logo that microstockgroup could let some of the sites display on their site? GL has made their own, but a badge that shows that this site is supported by the microstockgroup could maybe carry some more weight?

The criteria are simple in my book: Minimum 50 % of the sale price goes to the photographer. The sites that qualify are
GL
Yay
Alamy
more?

I looked through my port, and I'm not sure any of my pics are suitable for such a logo. But if one of you designers think this idea is good, you are welcome to use any of my pics (for free of course).

The sites could pay a small fee to microstockgroup, that could be channeled into the Kiva programme?

it is kind of funny because i guess many users are not aware of this 3rd party program... are only those images in folders are in it? or all portfolio?
The folder is an aapplication. If those pics are good enough, you get included. If not, you get turned down. If you are included, they will go through all of your pics regularly, and choose the ones they want for the Third Party Program.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:30 »
Not only is it NOT hurting non-exclusives by sending buyers to other sites, it is actually saving buyers money, too. Using basic minimum credit purchases to illustrate, a L image on IS costs $15.20, I get $3.00. The exact same image on DT costs the buyer $13.20 while I make $4.07.

Going exclusive made sense IF IS had honored their side of the bargain, but they have not. Now exclusives are SOL. And trust me I am not gloating. I have friends who have been with them from the start and it sucks big time that after all their commitment, they are getting the shaft.

And in January (if the prices aren't upped) the difference for me will be IS: 2.28, DT: 4.07
I wonder what choice is better for me?  ::)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:10 »
Today I had two of the smallest sales; one on DT and one on IS. The sale at IS gave me $0.19, the one on DT gave me 0.30. In january the minimum price at IS will be $0.14

Please explain how it will hurt me if I ask my designer friends to shop at DT, when I get twice as much money per sale there.

That sounds like a lot of fun; where can I see this?

they can't hold a candle to Shutterstock's quality by anyone's measure.

You are kidding? Well vector-wise IS has always been the best , admittedly SS has improved but IS is better without doubt IMHO.

Yes, Istock has been the top illustration place. It will be very interesting to see how long that lasts, with the incredible harsh terms they are presenting for their illustrators. Double the targets of the photogs, and if you do both you'll have to reach to different targets at once. I barely understand any of the reasoning for Istock, but this part of it is the craziest of them all. I should think the exclusive illustrators were the once they would do the most to keep happy?

Veer har 100/week, but only until they have looked at the quality of your work. If it is high quality, they will lift the limit.

The upload limit at DT for a newbie is at present 350 pics a week. Please do also notice this thread, where Serban promises you 0.20 USD in upload bonus for anything accepted before Nov 15th.

If you choose to quit exclusivity I'm sure any of your friends would appriciate it if you use their referral links. Or you could do as FD suggested in another thread and sell it to the highest bidder.

Well... Graphic Leftovers deserves that seal.

Any other agency like The3DStudio for example?

They pay over 50% too!
Alamy: 60 %

These pay 50% or more on ordinary sales, but have subscriptions that might be difficult to calculate:
Yay: 50%
CanStockPhoto: 50%
123RF: 50%

It is unlikely that contributors could get a big company like that to close down or turn around in a few days. But I expect there will be a large impact in 6 months or a year. The goodwill is gone, there are a lot of negative blogs out there, and the rumor will spread amongst contributors and buyers.

Man's memory is normally 14 days, or at least it is said so when it comes to weather. But if you have heard or read something bad about a shop/company/agency/brand/person, it will be nagging in the back of your mind even though you can't remember the details. And when you are going shopping, you will probably choose something else, without conciencelly thinking about it. This will be what hurts Istock in the long run.

I liked the "fair trade"-seal at GL, and I'm sure a lot of the other 50%+ sites would love to get one too. And it doesn't cost us anything.

Plus: certificates like those often cost money to get. So in order to get one that is supported my the microstockgroup, they have to make a (symbolic at first) contribution to the forum/kiva.

194
But you are still not considering going independent? (Just curious).

195
BTW, while we are pimping links; I normally use Leaf's links on the right side here. He deserves it for the good job he does on this forum! (Even though I haven't earned him a lot of money).

196
I sure wouldn't mind getting a few of those referrals. The upload bonus alone would be more than my ordinary income at DT. Sjlocke; you biting?  ;)
Any clever high-volume IS-er moving to DT will sell his referral link to the highest bidder.

Darn. You are probably right. :P

Achilles wrote a post today, trying to lure in exclusives.

1. Every exclusive-elsewhere member that starts to upload to Dreamstime will receive the upload bonus that we award to our exclusive photographers:
$0.20/approved image. This goes into effect today and ends November 15. All you need to do is email us the link that shows you are an exclusive contributor elsewhere and your account with us. On November 15 we will count your uploads and will award the bonus for all accepted files.

2. Same offer applies to exclusive-elsewhere members that have disabled images on Dreamstime. They will receive the upload bonus for all newly uploaded files (not for enabling the disabled files though). Naturally, these re-enabled files will gain their previous search placement and price level, so they will enjoy much better sales and royalties than from new uploads.

3. We will award the 10% share of the bonus+future earnings to all members referring such users (you just need to include your referral's username in your email or use it at registration time). Additionally, existing members who will motivate exclusive-elsewhere contributors to re-open their Dreamstime account (should they already have one), will be awarded as their referral users. An email to support is all that is needed. We've been bombarded with emails about disabled files. If they appear in your Disabled files section, you can enable them. If not, it means they were deleted and you need to re-upload.

Exactly why I go exclusive and was happy until this. I'm still happy since I can reactivate my portfolio at Dreamstime and Shutterstock quite easily (couple of hours). Still I don't know if my images will keep their search popularity they had before at SS, and neither If my images will stay level 2 and 3 at DT  :-\

The files at DT keep their level and number of sales. The only drawback in reactivating a file, is that the lock in periode of 6 months starts from fresh. If it has been a while since you went exclusive, you might even find that the levels have increased, DT did some reductions in the number of sales it took for a pic to reach a certain level.

With the buyers fleeing Istock, there might even be some sales at DT. Who knows.

@Leaf: have you thought of doing it as an offshoot of MSG ? You already exist. This could be the hub of the new site. Everyone is here already. Maybe what you are thinking and what FD is thinking is complimentary.

Initial inspection ? Easy: peer review - provide a link showing that another site we all respect has already accepted it. That will cover the first 5 million images at least :) Fastest growing site in history. Will it scale ? Will the bandwidth be too expensive ?

Really excellent ideas. (Maybe Alias is not an IS spy after all?) MSG is UGC, a stock site would be a natural outgrowth.

Is startup capital is needed, if half of the top 2% of microstockers put in $1000 each, for one share in the new venture, that would be a sizable sum to start off with. The shareholders would have self-serving reasons to make sure that they uploaded their ports to the site as quickly as possible, and in helping the venture succeed in other ways.

I'm not at all anywhere close to the top of anything, but this sounds like a good investment. Please let me know if you want my money in return for some type of shares. ;)

Approximately 1/4 of the supermarkets in Norway are owned by a major coop (called coop). Each customer pays 300 kroner (50UDS) for a membership, and get a 1% return on what they spend there. I have the impression that profits are quite good. There are also several major food brands owned by farmer coops. Coops work.
