There is a very easy solution; 3D has never sold a single file for me. No money to collect, no tax to pay.  ;)

Off Topic / Layoffs and available jobs
« on: January 18, 2012, 17:21 »
Re: the other thread about layoffs at iStock, several of you were talking about the difficult economy. I live in the opposite country, and hear people complaining every day about how difficult it is to get hold of enough qualified staff. The main problem is the lack of engineers, my town alone needs 150 engineers ASAP. But also other types of jobs have vacant positions. So if you know someone who is willing to weather a lot of storms, endure dark winters and expensive beer, but like having a steady job and making good money, tell her to have a look at http://www.nav.no/English

Fluent English skills are mandatory, and a positive attitude towards learning Norwegian is appriciated. Although we declined to join the European Union twice, we have agreed to all the EU laws anyways, so if you are an EU citizen it is relatively easy to get all the papers and permits in order.

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Beauty by Fotoshop
« on: January 12, 2012, 19:19 »
I tried to show some of the photoshop tutorials on youtube to my five-year-old, and told her "this is how they make people in magazines beautiful". She waited eagerly, but looked disappointed at me towards the end: "mama, they don't look beautiful, they just look like advertisement figures". Beauty in her eyes is still "real" people who look like they have lived a happy life, with wrinkles and some extra pounds around the middle.

What paperwork? It's only a small online form that takes 1 minute to finish. Two minutes if you are a slow reader.

Type your name:
List your country:
Individual or company:
Type your adress:
Are you sure you are a legal citizen of your country: yes/no
Type your name once more as a signature.

Done.

General Stock Discussion / Re: First Picture of 2012?

Somebody on Mostphotos is either vary late or very early in their Christmas preparations; my first 2012 sale was a St. Lucia Day-theme (Scandinavian holiday celebrated on 13. December).

100 % increase in income, 100 % increase in pictures. Statistics are fun when the data volume is small. :)

1. Spend more money on good food and wine.
2. Learn food photography so I can afford it.

I had regular sales until May, since then there has been few sales.

Sorry for the stupid question, but have you uploaded the files that IS rejected? What is accepted and saleable on one site is very different from good sellers on the other.

And now I'm missing pictures again. The last accepted batch has disappeared. :-\

I imagine you could get a couple of charities to set up accounts at SS, and then we could help distribute their links.

Why on earth do they want capitalized titles? Is there any logic behind that?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istockphoto Down For Maintenance or Hacked?
« on: November 29, 2011, 10:35 »
I have been on the verge of dropping my exclusivity many times. I just can't afford the risk at this point in time.

So you think there's less risk in remaining exclusive. Interesting.

Risk is usually defined mathematically as the product of 'Probability of Occurrence' and 'Consequence'. In my view the probability of Istock's failure seems to be increasing (as evidenced by the traffic stats, etc) and also the consequence of leaving exclusivity is becoming greater with every month that passes (the longer you leave it to join other sites the more difficult it will be for your images to achieve good sort order position).

Therefore the risk is actually increasing with time __ unless of course you believe that Istock can somehow compete effectively against the mighty threat that SS now presents and that the growth that they might achieve (theoretically) would also be enough to counteract the ever-increasing consquence of delay. That's not a wager I'd want to take with my income.

Well, there are several different functions used to define risk, depending on your area of expertice. Financial risk is not defined in the same way as geological risk etc. Most of the functions also includes uncertainty. Just to make it more interesting, there is also a distinction in some risk theories between uncertainty that you can calculate, and the uncertainty that is so little known that it is impossible to quantify.

Isn't math fun?

But I agree on the conclusion. This is not a good time to be exclusive. I wouldn't color it red yet, but definitely yellow with a relatively large uncertainty area.

SNP Quote "you're flattering yourself. What exactly qualifies you as the expert you seem to have become around here?"

As you know dear your a forum member that most people here ignore, so we rarely get to see the little gems that you post - another member (who incidentally now also has you on ignore), emailed me your little comment. Tut, tut - Didn't your mummy tell you to be nice?, allow me to give you some 'expert advise' try HRT.

Not that I'm a big fan of SNP and her snide comments, but your argumentation here plays right into this theory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_suppression_techniques

You are using a subgroup of "Ridicule"; "belittling". It is usually used by older men towards younger women, and kills any chance of a good discussion.

Thanks for your message. Although I do admit I could have written the comment myself I did not. Sara, our 21 YO intern (female) designer sent it as I was late into the office today. So where does that put your theory - wiki fan? And another point, there was no necessity for her original (snide - your description) comment. I have always believed that one that throws first gets in back with interest. Simply don't post snide comments in the first place -someone of her obvious years should know better. It's also interesting to note she has a much sweeter tone on the ISP forums crowing over her Diamond status, she seems to only show her sour and bitter persona on this forum. Wiki that.

I don't know if you at all opened the link? If you prefer I can send you the original book, I guess I underestimated your expert knowledge of the Norwegian language?

175 is better, but I wish they would lower it to 100, like many of the top microstocksites.

How can I get authorization to view my own earnings? Does it require legally stamped documents from several official offices? *feeling a bit like kafka here*

5-10 sales a month. But the pictures that sell there are very different from the ones that sell on SS and DT. It is obvious from my sales that ScanStock mainly focuses on the Scandinavian market, I think I've sold more cross country skiing pics on Scanstock alone, than on the other agencies combined. :)

I do not like that they keep so much of the money (flat rate of 1 Euro is not enough, considering they charge the customers 3-4 Euros/image), but they are helpfull, and pay their bills several weeks before the due date.

I have referred some buyers to DT since their system is extremely easy; the referral link is embedded in the photos I show in my blog. But IS is so complex that I never could be bothered to figure it out.

« on: October 29, 2011, 09:28 »
There are no terms for minke whale, only dwarf minke whale. Usually I guess most buyers don't care, but I had a big problem with it when we uploaded some pictures of whale beaf ready for cooking. The minke whale population is legally hunted in some areas of the world, the dwarf minke is totally illegal to hunt.

We once prosessed and uploaded one picture to Istock just because of the weird results in the CV: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=234802&page=1

I had seven new pictures missing, wrote support, and they replied within short time saying they were aware of the problem and worked hard at fixing it. The picture were back before I saw the reply, but I haven't seen any downloads of them. Maybe they are not visible to customers, maybe they are shite and nobody wants to buy them. I'm just happy SS are trying to fix things.

I have a few Models I've used for years. every now and then . I'll update them. Not for each shoot. Never a problem.

It would be if you submitted them to iStock. For shots taken after September 2009, iStock requires a new release for each new shoot, and, on that release there needs to be a meaningful shoot description and the shoot date on the release needs to match the shoot date on your exif.

Yes, it was a PITA. I live with my models, and sometimes I only get one usable shot during a day (kids...). The hassle of making separate releases every day bothered me. I solved it by deleting all people shots from IS september last year, and only keeping a few other pictures there. That saved me a lot of time and annoyance.
