"We advise against refreshing the page continuously as it will generate even more errors."

Sorry Alex, but the only thing that eliminates the tedium of watching it stagnate at 20% forever is by clicking the refresh page once every 30 seconds or so....it'll jump to 40%. 60%. 80%. And finally 100%. Can you not look at DP and DTs system? Create a homepage as soon as you log in? With all the relevant information right there in front of the contributor. Does everything with 123RF have to have additional steps? Can you not see how awkward, cumbersome and sloppy your system is?

The files uploaded and read as "File currently pending processing".  Note: I used the web uploader and not the ftp.

Yes...I too used the web uploader this morning and found that it was stuck on 20% when in the "file currently pending processing". I kept clicking "refresh page" until they went through.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Sudden drop in sales!
« on: June 13, 2013, 07:05 »
Please - if there's one re-occurring message on these
forums worth paying attention to it's:

Don't fret over day to day sales. Don't worry about
week to week sales. Don't even stew over your month
to month results....take note of your year to year. If it's
down, find out why. Is it you? Or is it the business in
general. If it's the industry, work collectively to try to
turn things around. If it's you, make changes. You're
in the wrong business if you constantly panic over your
day to day sales.

Cheers and all the best.  :)

Wonderful, Rubyroo! Thanks for sharing. Remarkable restoration. Reminds me of my uncle's work with color film back in the early 1940's.

Has anyone else noticed a change in their acceptance ratio at Deposit?

Yes. 95% acceptance up until a month ago. Now the vast majority are rejected for "not suitable for commercial use."

Stopped uploading because frankly the only motivation for submitting was their high acceptance rate. Certainly at $0.30 a sale there is now no incentive to work with them.

And here lies the answer.
Can you not see it?
They have had enough, now they want to improve quality.

Can YOU not see it? They want better images but they still want to pay peanuts. >:(

The code is this: figure out what buyers want, and a way to give it to them with as few costs (equipment, time spent, etc.) as possible.   Anyone can do what I'm doing... I'm nothing special in terms of skills, but maybe just in how I look at the market.

Can we see your portfolio?

I've noticed it too.

My laptop "most popular" is different, sometimes VERY different from my desktop "most popular". Very odd since both computers are on the same connection....The laptop is Windows 7. The desktop is XP. Both are Chrome.

Shutterstock.com / Re: When is an image a bestseller?
« on: May 04, 2013, 08:26 »
In this case, no, age doesn't play a factor. I should also note that this particular image is with three other agencies and sell very infrequently! So creating a "bestseller" maybe more than composition, subject matter, technical and creative aspects. Partnering with the right agency may also factor into it.

« on: May 04, 2013, 07:26 »
I'd define a bestseller as "an image that stays consistently on the top of the front page for an extended period of time". I only have one but it's more than a year old, sells every day, and has sat on Shutterstock's front search page since day one. Over the course of a year its' sold about 300 times. There are all kinds of "bestseller" categories: All time best seller, personal best seller, best seller in its' category, etc.

Off Topic / Transferring 16mm to Digital
« on: April 28, 2013, 14:35 »
Does anyone have experience digitally transferring 16mm film? I have a lot of material that I'd like to transfer on my own as opposed to sending it out to get transferred.

Any suggestions regarding equipment, cost or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

"I'm going to pay you $0.17 for your image and reject everything else you submit to me." 123RF has such a fascinating business strategy. ::)

« on: April 19, 2013, 10:23 »
I checked a recent sale on SS and found the image on page 4. The subject, a communications tower, has 66 pages in total so I'm not disappointed with the placement. It's the first sale with this particular image and it was submitted about 6 months ago.

My question: I noticed an error with the description. If I edit the description and re-submit, do I risk losing that fourth page placement?

I've been on-board for almost 2 years now and the more involved, the deeper I go! To the point now where its almost obsessive. Rejections help you learn. Acceptance keeps you motivated.

Very nice portfolio. A real potpourri. You'll do well!

To me, Pond5 is so simple for uploading, that it should be on anybody's upload list for when they get spare time.  Most of my files are priced at $15-20 for 720 since my content isn't of that good quality.  My better files are priced $35-$50.

"Better files". Better resolution? Better composition? Better subject? What do you define as "better files"?

And how do you know $35-$50 is an ideal price range for best sales? Overall income is split between three agencies? Have you tried tweaking P5 up to see if you can generate more income?

My pet peeve with P5 is that they give you nothing to analyse your pricing other than sales. Apparently their "view" stat is never updated. If anything, P5 should provide far more analytical tools because you're setting your own pricing. It's all guess work right now. That's why I don't bother with them.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Weird sales pattern
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:16 »
I started microstocking mid-2011 and DT was immediately my top agency. Images sold well and consistently the first six months....and then came 2012 and it all but disappeared. My portfolio grew (I have about 1000 now) but sales either stagnated or declined....that is, until the last few months whereby DT is suddenly alive and well.

For me, its a consistent pattern with mid-tier agencies although when the others drop in sales it doesn't last as long. SS is the only agency whereby the more I have in my portfolio, the more I earn....month after month. The odd glitch but consistent most of the time.

43
Thanks, Seti. I'm really finding Pond5 to be a microstock mystery.....I sell clips so obviously attracting a different crowd from CGI but in the end we're both faced with the same problem. How low do we set our portfolio to ensure:

1. They sell
2. They sell well.

I've planted 20 clips with P5 in November. These are clips that have sold with other agencies....and no sales. Is it the price I set? The quality of the clip?

Many people have proclaimed their undieing love for P5 and the success they found working with the agency, only to find out that their prices are set so low, it would take 10 sales to earn the equivalent of 1 SS sale.

I'm not sure that that would be a satisfactory pay-off for the amount of work I put into it (and only scraping the time and effort for CGI projects).

44
Thanks, Seti.....and how many clips do you have with Pond5? Shutterstock? And what is the price range you've set for Pond5? Thanks in advance.

General - Top Sites / Re: New top Tier
« on: April 01, 2013, 05:36 »
The earnings I lost with DT were more than made up for by another big BME with SS.

Amazing how two contributors can have an identically different month. I had a DT BME and SS was down dramatically in every catagory from last month. In fact, DT earnings weren't that far off from SS.

One thing's consistent for all contributors, it seems. Predictability is out the window month to month. This is a business not for the faint of heart. Hang on to your hats!
Here comes April!

Worth? Your body of work is only worth what someone is willing to pay to use it -

Dumb logic, DG. Sorry. Please don't quote me if you haven't read my entire contribution to this topic. If you want to feed an agency that thinks it can succeed by striping away contributor's earnings.....it's a free world (something 123 seems to be striving to achieve literally in the microstock industry).

If you, DG, want to compromise your body of work. It's your choice. "Sentimental value"? Huh?  :o

And as a final contribution to this topic (I promise).  ;D

Should I support a microstock company with the motto: "The low price leader for Royalty-Free content" ?

123RF, in my opinion, has a very narrow, uncreative, one-dimensional business sense. They feel the only way they can succeed is by offering their clients rock-bottom pricing.

Let's say they succeed.

Do you really think contributors won't be victimized again by them, or another agency who follows 123's example because 123 found success in squeezing the contributor?

That's why it's important 123RF fails. 123's failure will set a precedent whereby contributors have drawn a line in the sand and said...."my images are worth more than that."

The trouble is that if I remove my port from anywhere it won't make the slightest difference to anybody except for me as I will lose out on my earnings there.   I'm 100% sure that no buyer is going to follow me around looking for my images is they are no longer at one particular site.   Unfortunately that is the truth of the matter.

Ok. Fair enought. How about....I think my body of work is worth more than 123RF is willing to pay me.

I can understand why some people are frustrated, but why delete your portfolio? Stop uploading if you don't think it's worth your time, but deleting approved images seems silly.

Simple. 123RF takes away sales from other agencies that pay-out a lot faster.
