The Yongnuo units are ok ,and cheap enough so that you can pick up several in case of failure, People I know have had both good luck with them and bad. It's not a unit I can highly recommend. I am not sure if the Yongnuos have optical slaves - the Lumos do for sure. You will have to read the individual specs.

I don't know of any UK sellers on the Lumo units, but they will ship international no problem. I went for the Lumos because they are full featured and included the optical slave.. I don;t use the opticals that often, but they do come in handy.

The YN units have a pretty low guide number, where the Lumos are right up there with the Can 580EX and Nijon SB800 in terms of power.

Really not that much different from the micro people allowing their stuff to go into Free collections on the sites.

Because you are talking Commander it looks like you are wanting to use Nikon CLS, and that gets expensive no matter what. Your best bet is to forget all that, learn to shoot manual, and then you can use any unit at all, from expensive high powered strobes to $20 midi slaves.

I'm a bit confused. I don't want to use the TTL stuff, I want to set the flashes manually. What I want is to use the on camera flash to trigger the other slave flashes. I don't have pocket wizards or anything like that. I've had a look around but can't get a clear answer. I'm a bit confused with the terms.

I definitely don't want to use the auto settings, I like manual. I just want them all to trigger together without having to buy another trigger system.

Cheers,

Terry

Get the Lumo Pro LP160. Well built, good price, optical slaves. That you are willing to go manual changes the game entirely. I have 4 of them. They are available here

http://mpex.com/

They are a reliable trusted vendor and ship international.

Nikon SB600 is pretty much a joke because they have no sync terminal - I had them and sold them. SB900 overpriced and overheats if you are trigger happy..

just move on and do something else. There aren't many images that are so special they are your only chance to do something.

Bingo you win

I'll believe that Yuri's being downgraded when I see it. No way will he bow to pressure from Fotolia. Be aware that this can "apply" to Yuri and yet he can just go on untouched because the rule says it's entirely at Fotolia's discretion who they choose to penalise. It isn't "If you do A we do B" it is "If you do A we can decide whether or not to do B".

With a load of legal wrangling, it could take a few years..........by which time Yuri is a TV CELEB and then it wouldn't matter so much.  ;)

I'll only believe it when Yuri comes here personally to complain about it. He'll likely arrange his own little side deal just like other places.

You would also think that this news would be posted over at the FT forum to discuss!
Incredible!

Will never happen because they will muzzle the contributors.

Your best bet is to forget all that, learn to shoot manual, and then you can use any unit at all, from expensive high powered strobes to $20 midi slaves. CLS is nice if you have the bucks. Go to Strobist.com and read Lighting 101. All of it. Thoroughly. I have a Hasselblad and still find myself using the 20 yr old $20 midi slaves for accent pops of light. It ain't all about needing to get expensive system strobes, be they Nikon or Canon.

BTW the SB26 getting harder and harder to find because the Strobist people snap them up almost as soon as they appear, and again, if CLS is the goal, they won't function in that fashion.

You can work with domed work lights from the hardware store if you know how to work your light modifiers. It doesn't get much cheaper than that.

To the pixmac guy

Would also like to know why the term Shutterstock still returns search hits and now also iStockphoto. Don't give us that crap about the Submitter putting this in like the last time i questioned you on this - We're not that stupid.

Here's an example.

http://www.pixmac.com/picture/shutterstockdreamstime123rf/000063827799

It is a very poor business practice to the point of illegal when trading on the business names of others. So riding on the success of others, possibly lifted vectors for your own portfolio.. What next? A new scheme?

Hi there!

Generelizing?  but where? maybe I worded it wrong?  what I meant was: if an editor, looking for the artistic, commercial value, etc, was going through all these gazillions of micro images in every agency there is ( no specific agency but all)  we would probably only have about 25% left.

I mean, you have to agree, todays photo agencies, may it be RM, RF, Micro?  its not exactly the heights of creations, is it?  its basically there to furnish buyers with ordinary pics, suitable for ordinary needs and if a buyer should want something tailormade, well thats when he comissions a dayrate photographer.

best.

So far, you're the only one who got it right.

Isn't Google + designed to compete with Facebook?  Or, am I thinking of something else?

Yes but I also have a feeling they're looking to take on Flickr as well. What FB user cares about EXIF extraction?

if I upgrade to another body with a motor in the future, will I still be able to use those AF-S lenses with motors?

Yes. But if it is (likely) a DX crop lens, you will be limited on a full frame sensor body like the 12MP D3. It will still work, but it will go into an automatic crop mode of about 6MP I think. Don't have any DX lenses anymore so can't give you the exact here.

Sean definitely gave you the best answer.
Imagine if I went onto a pro tennis forum and, arriving completely out of thin air, I posted, "I want to be a pro tennis player, which raquet and shoes should I get?"

Wilson and Nike, respectively of course:)

I have a new drill motor. Can I take care of that back molar for you??? :D

Nikon vs Canon, Ford vs Chevy.

I can tell you that the Canons are in the shop more than the Nikons. I have more Nikon because I can't afford the downtime. A few of the cameras suffer a lot of abuse.

All Nikon models allow the capability to mount the old legacy manual focus lenses, basically any AI lens made after 1978 I think. Although I think metering will only work with higher end models like D200 and up. Doesn't matter as I only shoot manual anyway and use all of my circa 1980 lenses on them.

With Canon, there can limitations if you want to explore lenses and build a system eventually.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF-S_lens_mount

There is no "better" these days. Each brand has its own features, limitations, quirks. I hated that the old Canon 40d constantly gave me a lens mount error. I hate that the Nikon D90 takes an SD card. That means I have to carry 2 card types when I take that camera.

To make a truly informed decision, you really need to define your goals and then go after the lens and feature set you want. And again, feature sets are usually a lot of crap anyway and I never use things like scene mode, exposure compensation etc. And if you have no lenses to start with, the brand does not matter for the lower tier models - they're all capable. The brand factors in heavily when and if you expand into a pro system. In that case, Nikon wins for me. We really only bought Canon for video, but we use Nikon glass. The entry models at the sub $1000 price point is sort of like buying a point & shoot. They'll all do pretty much about the same thing, some with more pizazz.

As the megapixel race is pretty much stable for the moment, all the manufacturers are doing with the new entry models anyway is cramming in new features like "Selective Color" and "Color Sketch" which no one needs (D5100), but it is a way to keep the product line fresh and entice the masses. One nice thing is that the the D5100 does use the same sensor as the highly rated D7000.

I disagree again.  You are reading way too much into my post.

Just stick with answering the questions and quit wondering about why they arised, OK??

Also in answer to your other question... "why Canon?"

Because that is the brand of SLR camera I have used for many years when I was shooting with film.

Duane

Being a camera fanboy gets you nowhere.

So let's pose another question? What does your vision offer besides multiple versions of the isolated tomato? Because as mentioned above, what you decide to shoot dictates what type of camera you need, not camera brand.

It's a valid question, and probably the most important one to answer.

You have come here with the same old same old noob questions which could have been easily answered using a search function here or on the web at large. So, the only interesting question that remains is the "why?". What are your goals, and what is your motivation here? That one of your original concerns is the ability to remove telephone poles tells me that your views of photography are bit skewed. There are no instant solutions, and no standard answers to your questions. Are you looking to be a photographer or a retoucher?

The Rebel is good. The Nikons are good. Either will satisfy amateur needs. All you need is a good lens and the ability to dump the files. Expose properly, compose properly, learn to work with light - you will get good pictures.

I disagree. The initial question and the subsequent posts from this person were not valid, nor were they helpful.

As for my questions about removing telephone poles... I don't expect to be removing them very often from a photo as proper composition, exposure, etc can save a lot of editing time... but I definitely want my software to have the capability to remove unwanted items, should the need arise.

From someone who has been involved with all aspects of stock for many years including agency, buying, shooter, and illustrator, the Why is the most important question. Is it money? Is it art? Is it seeing your name on a credit line?

And why Canon? Why not Pentax K-5?

Btw, if you answered my question, you might actually have gotten better answers.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that!!

None of your postings to this thread have been useful so far.

Makes me glad there's an Ignore button.  Looks like I will be using it.

P.S. For a successful photographer, you sure like to conduct yourself in an unprofessional manner. Makes me wonder if you are who you claim to be.  Online Identities are easy to fake.

I am just getting started into stock photography and I got a lot of questions.  Can anyone help?

1. I am thinking of getting a DSLR.

Why do you think "stock photography" is something you want to do?

Ah, the old "answer a question with a question", and its a good one. Let's see if you get an answer ;-)

All the crap about Fair and Transparency, and yet Pixmac still fails to provide an open and clearly  stated list of who their microstock suppliers are. Is Shutterstock in on the game now too? See the link

http://www.pixmac.com/picture/http%3Asubmitshutterstockcomforumviewtopicphpp478725478725/000057684497

Or for more fun, type in Shutterstock as a search term and see what comes back. Even if the image is not coming from shutterstock, what gives PM the right to even allow Shutterstock as a search term or include URLs to the Shutterstock forum on their site?

I myself was a victim of the back room tactics when they scraped all my images from 123RF. When I demanded they be removed from Pixmac, PM said it couldn't be done. When I contacted 123RF about my images, they said they were aware of no such partnership. Well suddenly 123 somehow became "aware" I closed my account at 123. Not a big deal as I detach myself more and more from micro every day and now mostly shoot commercial.

This whole Fair signup and is nothing more than an attempt by this band of gypsies to build another link farm for themselves. How said for the the microstock industry. Those of you who claim that you are in a real business should do more research before signing their little link list. This is not a group I want anything to do with.

and go to the bottom of the page. Looks like the guy is a busy hobby blogger now trying to make a go with stock.

On his invitation with "send us a few low res pics" - Do they have to look as good as the pics on the BreadBaking blog he has?  This guy has no clue on some of the crap people send and obviously knows nothing about the stock business.

And MongoDB on a stock blog? Are you really serious here? How does that even remotely benefit a buyer or a seller?
