General Photography Discussion / Re: Shooting from a moving car
« on: August 15, 2016, 22:37 »
I know nothing about camera stabilzers.  Would some sort of gyroscopic rig actually help, or are they just for video?
I've some experience with using a gimbal for video, but (at least with the one I have) it isn't a good idea for photos. The gimbal does NOT like you to touch the camera while it's trying to stabilize.  If you have a way to remotely release the shutter, then perhaps a gimbal will help. I don't think it gains much, though -- maybe a stop or two. It won't do anything for motion blur, of course.

You're very, very best bet is (as you know) the highest shutter speed you can use, even if you have to crank up the ISO (and, of course, open the aperture wide).

Shutterstock.com / Re: SSTK stock hits new high
« on: August 15, 2016, 13:36 »
To be accurate, that's a new yearly (52-week) high. It's still down about 40% from its all-time high.

Of course, 'New' doesn't actually display new files anymore. More like new-ish (along with old-ish ones, too).

But it's still there, sort of. You have to select an image type first (e.g., 'Photos' -- but 'Images' which includes all types works, too  ::)).

It's perfectly obvious, don't you think?  ???

Software / Re: preferred image viewer
« on: July 16, 2016, 23:11 »
I use and love irfanview, though admittedly it isn't the easiest / friendliest UI (by far). Been using it for over 10 years now, and it hasn't changed much. It's still fast, lightweight, but with a semi unfriendly UI. But once you learn it, it won't change.

Seems to work fine under Win 10 (I'm using the 64-bit version, which is much faster with large files than the 32-bit version was). However, supposedly some of the plug-ins don't work with the 64-bit version (not a concern for me).

Adobe Stock / Re: Interesting popup on Fotolia site
« on: July 08, 2016, 11:24 »
As I understand it, money from Fotolia shows as Commission: 0.00 and sales from Adobe show as Sale Price: 00, then your commission is some percentage of that sale price. I have my sales set to send me an email, and in the subject line the Fotolia sales say File Sold and the Adobe sales say File Sold (credits).
As I understand it you can get credits too on Fotolia File Sold is for subscriptions.

I searched back through old threads and this is all I can find as an official answer from Mat:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/where-are-adobe-stock-sales-posted/msg422452/#msg422452

Bummer. Looks like no way to tell right now. Not sure where i got my incorrect info.  :o

I guess I'm wrong.

My initial HD 1080 sales all had commissions of 28 credits, except for one which was 22.50. Since then, they have been only 20 credits (though I've actually had more sales of size M and HD 720 than HD 1080). I incorrectly assumed all those sales were happening on Fotolia, not Adobe Stock.

Wherever they are happening, I am not as happy with sales as I was in the beginning. My average RPD is much lower than any other site I'm on.

PS - Sorry; I realize now this was not in the video section of the forum, so it wasn't even an appropriate place for my post.

I'm not so sure why do you have to actively click it and why do they call it the "classic" site looks to me like its being phased out. Wonder if this is connected with a decline in my sales.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking when I saw it, too.

I can see how the two sites might reach two different markets, but it seems like Adobe has much bigger and better brand recognition than Fotolia.
I have only about 1/3 of my port UL'd to Fotolia, so my sales are quite sporadic and sparse (I'm talking 1-3 per month!).

But very strangely, I began the year with all but 1 of my sales from Adobe's site from Jan - Mar. So I thought, great, most sales will be from Adobe, which is nice since they pay more than Fotolia. Nope. I've had sales every month since March, but every one has been from Fotolia.

Anyone else seeing anything even remotely similar to that? Probably my sales are just too few and it's all randomness.

Thanks Mantis but I actually thought everyone would get this mail, the wording seems rather general.
Nope.  :'(  ;D

83
With small ports, you really can't tell anything. SS & VB have been "normal" for me, but Fotolia is entirely gone. I had sales in each of the first 3 months of this year there, but haven't had a single sale since March. My FT port is still quite small, though (< 400 files). I fear I haven't been growing it enough to keep up with the flood of new submissions.

My response took 25 days, the same length as Jo Ann's response.

So that's answer to the question the original post asked: 25 days (at the moment).

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Paying 17,5$ - 1080p
« on: April 26, 2016, 18:55 »
So is there any way to differentiate between what are sales from Adobe and which ones are from Fotolia?
Maybe someone else can verify this, as I've had only ONE Fotolia sale. But it is marked with "(credits)" in my sales list under 'License', as opposed to my Adobe sales that show only the size in that column. Also, the email announcing the sale was marked "File Sold (credits)", whereas the Adobe sales were marked just "File Sold".

Those almost surely sold on Fotolia, not Adobe. Fotolia's payout varies, but is never as high as $28.

Need info about account and tax forms.

Istock and SS, no reply more than 10 days ...
You have a long wait ahead for SS (3.5 weeks for me, STILL no answer).

iStock usually replies in about 2 weeks, at least the last time I wrote them, so you might be almost there.

88
Their forum administrator just came in with this:

"Please remember that for every comment here against, there are people who love the changes and are happy, as is the norm. I'm one who loves it."
Someone should reply:

"Please remember that for every comment here against, there are 10 others who are also against the changes, but have not posted."  ::)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: keyword issues with editorial in stock
« on: April 17, 2016, 17:49 »
"UC Davis" is searchable, but only if the buyer knows to put double-quotes around the phrase (I doubt many would). Davis, as you've found, is not, and certainly should be.

The CV may have been a great idea, but the current implementation makes it pretty tough to find many things. Combined with spamming, the search results are often very poor.

Pond5 / Re: Is setting 80$ for a 4k video is too high?
« on: April 15, 2016, 22:55 »
The fact that someone is even posting this question is 100% Pond5's fault.

I posted this last year, and while I haven't checked recently I suspect it hasn't changed by much. This is what P5 shows contributors when they go to set the price of an upload:

HD clips: $43.60 (all), $59.80 (best-selling)
4K clips: $50.30 (all), $80.30 (best-selling)

 :o

Just got my notice, and was able to initiate the transfer out of PayPal to my bank without issue.

However, the amount is terrible! It's by far the smallest amount I've earned on P5 since 2011. Less than 1/3 my average earnings.  :(  >:(

And this month isn't one bit better.

92
I'm waiting for more than a week now, no reply yet. SS used to be a much better agency not so long ago. Really disappointed :(
I completely (for the moment) forgot about this! Tomorrow will be two weeks. Time for me to write again, I think.

93
Go to "Contact us" page and select the correct category. Writing to "[email protected]" seems not really working like in past.

Thanks, everyone. The above is exactly what I did, but as I mentioned in the OP I did not receive an automated reply back saying they got my inquiry, etc. But sounds like it's going to be at least a little while longer before I hear back from.

94
It's been quite a while since I last wrote SS support. I've never used the "new" 'Contact Us' form before.

I sent in a question on 1 April, but haven't heard back from them yet. Since I don't even have an auto acknowledgement of them receiving my question, I'm just wondering how long I should wait before trying again?

95
We get 30% of the sales price for cart sales.

The "list" (i.e., regular) cart price of a Low-res clip is $19 (or at least it was, the last time I looked). 30% of $19 is $5.70, so that's the most we ever get for a Low-res cart sale. Some buyers pay less, so sometimes we get less. I think $3 is the lowest I've had.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Sales Reporting
« on: April 03, 2016, 18:46 »
Can they really be delaying reporting sales 'till the next month?
When P5 pays out, they pay out your current balance at that time (i.e., on the 15th, usually). What benefit would they get for delaying reporting of sales from the 31st to the 1st?

Though it has been said that all sales are delayed by 3 days, in order to give a window for refunds. I don't know if that's true or not, but as I've never knowingly had a refund at P5, it might be.

and hes obviously clueless based on statements like "Yet those few things that Photoshop can do that Lightroom hasn't yet "
You obviously don't know that site if you think he's clueless.

The whole thing is a joke, and that's part of it.

They had me for a moment or two.  But why post an AFD story 4 days early?
That's why I found it particularly disturbing. But I can understand why, as people generally catch on too easily now.

Software / Adobe Photoshop for free!
« on: March 27, 2016, 18:39 »
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/adobe-to-offer-ad-supported-photoshop-free.html
Taking a cue from the abundance of advertising supported applications on Android and iPhone platforms, Adobe is set to release Photoshop for free, with revenue generated from integrated advertising. Yes, advertising in Photoshop. The official announcement is rumored to come soon.

I found this article particularly disturbing, for reasons that will become clear to anyone who reads the entire thing. Is this going to become a trend? I sure hope not! (Of course, I am not helping by spreading it around now, am I?)

This may change and will play into the new royalties system that we going to be rolling out later in the year yes, that's a dropped hint to something big coming, and we're confident that contributors are going to like it."
And I'm just as confident we won't.

I wonder who's going to be right?  ::)
