Am I overlooking something or am I blind? I do not see a place for checking sales stats..

102
I asked about it here:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/veer-marketplace/veer-marketplace-opens-to-contributors-on-june-8th/msg95852/#msg95852

and the answer was currently no, although they were open to suggestions about it.

Thanks..

Just wondering if Veer has a referal program??

104
Has anybody who's images were transferred in from SV had their account log-in information sent to them yet?

Yes,
I got it this morning and when I signed in had to fill out a couple of forms like a w-4, agreements for contributions as well as transfer of images from SV to Veer etc.. and change your default password.. I am able to log into FTP, but all my uploads fail so far, like their server might be overloaded with ftping or something.. Also you need to ftp with explicit tls/ssl not regular ftp..

105
Yes, absolutely.. I got reamed back a little while ago for telling someone I did'nt appreciate the pimping.. Now think people are actually realizing that people are trolling these forums looking for ways to exploit them and microstock..

For a small fee, I'll condense the useful posts into a daily email, with humorous photography tips sprinkled throughout.  Only $29.95 a year.  If you act now, I'll throw in my patented "Zen Reflector", a foil covered triangle hat you can use as a light bouncer as well.

lol - I'd buy the hat  ;D

Well you're certainly fitting my definition of genious.

Ha ha ha.. Nice!!!

BTW - Genious I think Istock does it intentionally so that people only upload their best stuff..

Veer / Re: Anyone sells at Veer yet?
« on: April 10, 2009, 00:28 »
I don't understand why it takes months upon months to move everything over. Seems like the typical Snapvillage half-ass everything method. I was hoping that things were finally changing.

I think that they have to re-review everything as I believe was said earlier that standars will be higher than previously on SV..

Alamy.com / Re: Recently joined!! how successful??
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:47 »

As far as sales there, it is slow but one sale from an image I took in Ireland made me $270 recently.. So one sale is much better than months of sales at certain micro agencies.. Also remember that quite a few people are uploading their micro images to alamy and that will in the future have an effect on the way the sites direction goes as well.. Buyers will eventually figure out that the images are in both places and get turned off..

This is the kind of statement I used to keep hearing.  I got sucked in by this faulty logic, and went to the trouble of uploading a couple of hundred images to Alamy (about three-quarters editorial and travel).   I haven't had a single sale yet, after 3 months.   I do regularly sell editorial photos at DT (at low prices, to be sure, but if you know your math, that's infinitely more than nothing).   Alamy recently published some sales figures, and it turns out that the average photographer's revenue per image is 80 cents per year.  If that's the case, it's not worth the effort to upload to Alamy, because I do much better than that on the  microstock sites  (where the best one is Istock, with $4000 in the past year on 1000 images, in spite of their low commission rate).   In fact, I have stopped uploading to Alamy, and would have to see some sales before I go to the trouble of adding more.    Alamy has some good images, but also a lot of junk, because they are the least selective of any stock agency I have seen.   At the prices they charge, buyers don't get very good value, so it's not surprising that sales are poor.    In spite of their high prices, Alamy's searching is pretty much cruder than any microstock, with no disambiguation, and that wastes the buyer's time.

I don't think you have been there long enough to come to this conclusion.. You start at a middle rank and work your way up from there and sales can take months to actually come together.. I think your calculations of $0,80 per image is not really the case, maybe if you are calculating all the crap and bad keyworded images yes.. But I think if you took all the real hard working photographers and averaged their per image income it would be a different number.. most people say that if you are decent you can expect somewhere at 1 sale per month per every 1000 images if you averaged that sale at $100 you get $10 per image per month.. But it is not fast cash like the micros, you have to wait for things to start rolling.. And alamy is a great place I think for good editorial and RM that wouldn't make the mass download thresh hold on micro, unless you have access to Getty or Jupiter RM but that is a different story all together..

Actually their search is a pretty logical setup you handle all the keyword plurals to make sure plural actually fits the image.. You get moved up the search by how many views to zooms/sales, so if your images are good and keyworded good then you will be rewarded.. If your images suck and you have spammed or bad keywording you get penalized.. Seems pretty logical to me..

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Subs
« on: March 19, 2009, 00:32 »
OMG  ;) First macro to fail into subs. Who's next

They're just trying to keep up with the rest of the bunch.. Their biggest income is editorial, and that is shrinking rapidly.. What would you do if you had to keep the company afloat? They have to be competitive to the market which is heavily getting pushed to lower price points and subs unfortunately..

General Stock Discussion / Re: Vectorizing
« on: March 17, 2009, 19:39 »
Did you take the photos?

If the answer is yes, and you provide a very detailed explanation about what and how old the original piece is, they MAY let it through.

If the answer is no, then no, you cannot sell a vector made from those photos.

Exactly true.. If you did not take the photo, then just because it is vectorized does not allow you to sell it.. It has to be your original work otherwise it is a duplication of copyrighted material..

114
Absolutely.. I think it is needed at this point in the game.. There is rampant stealing and re-selling images..

I draw 2 conclusions. The main one is that if you're new and don't start selling right away, you're downgraded at some point and might as well give up because people aren't even seeing your images any more. It's not hard to figure this out.  Reviewing is expensive - maybe the biggest cost of running a microstock business - and if you're not selling, they're losing money by paying people to review your images and would really like you to just go away.

Completely incorrect and on par with the rest of your uninformed and negative rants.. It has to do with your approval rate as well as your keywording, descriptions, image titles and obviously quality.. My guess is 2 or more of these for you are not up to par.. SS is easy to get new stuff downloaded, and you will soon see that the new image factor will fall away and the true test of your skills will be tested..

I don't know about anyone else but things happening at Dreamtime lately have seriously made me consider pulling my portfolio from there.

-Their only credible resource has announced she's leaving.

-It's impossible to upload there using any FTP software.

-Yesterday they had a major security breach and are recommending everyone change their password (although they're doing their best to play this down in the forum)

-Sales lately have just plummeted.

-But the final insult for me was reading in the forum about their latest editor, not only has this guy got a mediocre portfolio with low sales, but one of his latest uploads is a photo of a duck, and not just a photo of a duck but one he took standing up and looking down and he even managed to cut the tail out of the frame, I mean for crying out loud this guy is going to be reviewing our work!!!

just to chime in here...and to agree with everyone else, what are you talking about??!?
FTP is working just fine, Sales are looking good, $/download is the highest ever, Ellen got a book contract and wants to focus energy on that as well as work on her own consulting business, and the security breach happened at istock

Haha.. Nice.. Pretty much what I was thinking..

Veer / Re: Veer Marketplace Is Live

I could be wrong here but this looks like the first major agency that has decided to put its micro offerings on a tab right next to everything else. I'm not sure about Jupiter, I never followed them very closely.

Yes as far as I know, but inmagine is doing the same thing right now with 123 as well..

When they don't even mention how many watts the lights are that's a good indicator it is not very good..

General Stock Discussion / Re: Only Moments Away?
« on: February 23, 2009, 16:40 »
Well they needed to do something to compensate for the lack of sales on 123RF, I'm not Inmagine is going to be the magic cure, I've been with them on the macro side of things and sales are non-existent there, I stopped uploading ages ago and in fact I was toying with pulling all my images off and putting them elsewhere.

Yeah me too.. Although I am baffled by the lack of sales since their alexa traffic is WAY higher than Alamy or Age, actually it is right up there with corbis and jupiter.. I don't understand how they can have all that traffic and be lacking in the sales..

Veer / Re: Veer Marketplace Is Live
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:39 »
Hi everyone,

Veer Marketplace is now live on Veer.com.  Check it out:  http://www.veer.com/marketplace

This phase one launch features the first batch of SV contributors to be moved over to Veer.  More SV contributors will be moved over the next couple of months.  And then in spring/summer we'll have the full Marketplace site up and running, so contributors can upload their images directly to Veer.

Let us know what you think and feel free to ask Brian and I any questions.

Aaron

ps.  The announcement of "A Brand New Low" is a tongue and check reference to pricing.  Veer customers are smart design nerds so they love the inside jokes.

What if we have not been moved over yet and would like to start uploading right away?

does every site have its own model releases? or can I upload istock model releases to other sites?

which sites would you recommend I go to first?

Just photoshop out the Istock logo and any references and it should be fine..

« on: February 22, 2009, 23:04 »
this is a question about the basics of being non-exclusive...let's say I have ten images. if I am non-exclusive, can I upload these same ten files to every agency for sale? or do non-exclusives have different images on different sites? do sites frown upon uploading the same images across the board?

my assumption about workflow for a non-exclusive accepted on three or four sites is to upload every image to every site and see what happens. I assume each site has its strengths, weaknesses and preferences. are these general assumption correct? thank you.

Yes, all images and all agencies.. Some accept different stuff so the ports will vary slightly but the general idea is spread your images out.. Are you starting to second guess your exclusivity?
