Newbie Discussion / Re: Noise Problem
« on: November 28, 2008, 23:22 »
yeah, check out noiseninja or neatimage

Yes for pictures already taken with noise.. Be careful on how far you use noise reduction as it will remove details.. Also you can remove noise through channels in photoshop.. Getty has a good tutorial somehwere on how to remove noise within the channels to avoid losing details..

over expose your image.

How to keep noise away from the get go..  ;D

« on: November 26, 2008, 00:56 »
I earned a degree in computer animation from the Art Institute of Seattle.. I loved the cool stuff you can do, but Like Sean and Helix said it is so labor intensive.. The industry is very tight and difficult to break into and once your in it is long hours and tight deadlines constantly.. I would say that 3d for microstock is limited, as it is so much work to make a good 3d model from scratch, that you have to really keep what you do simple and that keeps your options a little limited because the returns might not justify the time spent.. I guess if you plan it out and do stuff that doesn't involve a lot of 3d details and "fake it" with textures then it might work for you..

I use 3d studio max mostly, and also mess with Maya from time to time.. Both very Great programs and the industries best..

Yuri Haters...You know who you are. Don't hate it's bad for your health.

ROFL - That is f'in classic.. Don't hate tha playa, hate tha game YO!

Yuri didn't do it, someone else did and I'm sure he's trying to get it dealt with but he probably has to deal with the distributor and not Alamy or both maybe.. Kinda dramatic to make such a stink about something that was already addressed as a screw up! I mean when you roll out 10k some odd images through yourself and however many distributors and do it without a hiccup you'll be "the sh$%" for sure!

Emphimy - I know that some people will disagree, but I would not try to submit anything from your Istock portfolio. This is just based on my experience with Istock - aceeptance at Istock means an almost sure rejection everywhere else, and vice versa.

I agree with this.. Istock and SS accept/reject almost total polar opposites most of the time..

I wouldn't count on just because Istock accpeted them that SS will.. Remember SS is big on technical quality, so if they are saying that your images are out of focus then you should re-evaluate if they are really good and worth re-sending, then maybe try to downsize them some with bycubic sharpener no less dimensions than 1850 px on the small side.. This will help sharpen them up.. Only send your top notch images, if you are not %100 sure, take it out.. If after taking out the "iffy" images you come up short of 10 then go shoot some more to get the 10.. Also make sure they are all different in subject matter and stock orriented.. Pictures of your dog or a sunset is not going to get you through.. ;D Good luck..

I agree that the supplier is under the responsibility to supply high quality saleable images.. The sites are responsible for the sale side of the transaction, and we pay them a large percentage (overly large at times) for this role.. So yes I also honestly believe it is their responsiblity to cover the transactions (and their own security) If they are not liable then they have less reason to cover theirs and our butts.

If we had to choose a site to go exclusive with, it would be DT, hands down.

Agreed!!

Jonathan,
You are truely a optimist and a very knowledgeable person.. It's nice to have some opinions other than the end of stock is coming.. keeps us ones that are striving to get a small place in the market going..  ;D

I'm sure RM is always going to have a place as marketing people don't always like to know there are hundreds of the same image floating around the world in circulation.. Hopefully Macro RM and Micro RF can both evolve into something beneficial for all.. Change is good as long as we all stick up for ourselves and our industry and make sure there are checks and balances.. Even the all hailed Getty is subject to contributor participation, they too would fall if everyone stuck together to denounce them if they pulled a fast one or something.. But If we are not together they have full control. So Long rant short we run the show if we want to.. We can mold our industry through hard work, integrity and working together.. Kumbayaa, kumbayaa, yada, yada, yada..

Hey Christian,

I heard that when I first started doing commercial work 20 years ago. The market was over saturated we were looking at a recession ( before the DotCom Boom ) and we were told that you won't survive in this market. We had 10K saved and built a thriving business in the middle of chaos from a glorified garage. I heard the same thing when RF started 10 years ago that stock was surely dead but we changed our market from commercial to stock at that time and turned stock into a seven figure income.

I had a tour of a famous stock photographers studio back in college in the 80's. I stood in his 10,000 sq. ft. studio in complete awe as he proceeded to tell us that we could never compete in the stock market and that it was to expensive a game to get into now that it was controlled by the big boys. I went home from that day very discouraged, look how wrong he turned out to be. It is a hard game to play but I am no one special and I think if anyone still wants to work their way up the ladder it will always be possible. A solid education is a good start but look at Chase Jarvis he is self taught and doing very well in the commercial marketplace so there are still ladders to the top even bypassing school.

That famous stock photographer from my class tour has since passed on and guess who took his place. Especially Lifestyle Stock. It needs replacing every 5-7 years due to lifestyle changes in society. Eventually both you and I are going to quit or die someone will have to make those images that we won't be making anymore and I believe everyone here has a chance. You just have to want it enough.

Best,
AVAVA

Seriously?!  You guys would rather deal with StockXpert than DT??

Are we talking about the same StockXpert that put our images on photos.com and was giving away EL usage for .30 subscription price without even offering an opt out (until half their contributors threatened to pull their portfolios)?
And is this the same StockXpert that failed to record or pay royalties on sales from photos.com for over three weeks (supposedly because their ONLY PROGRAMMER was on vacation!?), until (again) contributors raised hell and demanded payment?

Dreamstime has NEVER pulled anything underhanded with their contributors and has recorded sales and paid on time, every time, without hassle.

There is absolutely no comparison between the two sites.  At least none that is favorable to StockXpert.

Absolutely true.. Although StockXpert is a OK site, there is no comparison.. DT is always climbing and always fair and is consistent.. If I had to choose, between all sites except for SS (just SS and 1 other) it would be DT hands down.. All the rest are lagging pretty hard except for maybe fotolia and that is sometimes questionable as well unless your in the top teir..

« on: November 16, 2008, 20:52 »
SS is a good site, it has been a few years since I did my initial 10 and I'm sure they would have been declined at todays standards.. SS is big on technically correct images, so if you can get 10 images that have good lighting (I mean good not just is this ok lighting).. Sound stock subjects and no noise, you should have no problems.. If you are not sure the image is "good enough" then that should tell you there to not use it.. Also be aware that SS is filling up rapidly and stuff gets burried quick, so only quality will last with sales everything else will drop off quickely (except for some unique stuff)..

I havn't had the greates luck with Istock and isolations.. They are pretty picky, just taken some and rejected others for weird reasons.. But I really don't pay much attention to them anyways they are falling behind..

Yes you can.. As far as rules go, but I think it is a good way to help kill a decent site as well as your photo industry.. It's a moral delema that you must decide, but remember your decisions will affect yours and others futures little by little..

« on: November 14, 2008, 22:33 »
Yes I do.. But I have yet to make a sale.. They are also a little quirky with what they select, I havn't quite figured out what they actually want as it's a little random.. I havn't heard much about anyone selling there so I think it might be slow there but they are non exclusive so Ive you have stuff with Alamy you could also send it there, but no micro work can go on there..

Speaking of inmagine. Does anyone submit there? i was thinking about submitting RM work there but seems like its mostly RF macro

Computer Hardware / Re: Dead computer hard drive rescue???
« on: November 09, 2008, 11:33 »
That would work, if the computer booted to a blank.. But the problem is, the computer does not completely power up.. From what I read from Chris earlier.. Which would most likely mean that the motherboard or power supply went bad.. If it was just a drive, it would boot to an error screen..

Ok, i realize i am a little late into this conversation, and I may not know what I am talking about but.... here is my two cents...

If the rescue computer isnt booting when you attach the third problem drive.. then it must be trying to boot from that drive or something??  That is set in the bios .. edit: oh yeah.. i bet that is it.  You have your computer set to boot from the CD first (if it can) and then try your hard drives.  Since you are attaching your problem drive to the cd spot, it tries to boot from there first.  So change it to trying to boot from the regular hard drive first (in the bios).  The other drives didnt cause a problem because there was no boot info on them.

if that doesnt work though my suggestion would be to buy an external drive case that you can just slip your problem drive into.  That makes it very simple to just stick your third drive in there and connect it to a usb port and then hopefully access your files.  Once you are done, you have a useful external drive case when the same thing happens again :)

Haha, sorry.. Basically it sais that you don't need to set master / slave, as with the sata configurations they all would run as masters.. Here is some seagate sata drive information

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Serial_ATA_Jumpers_and_Cabling&vgnextoid=4a02242cb043e010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

I would say your easiest solution (if whatever you are trying with pluging into an vista machine doesn't work, is plug it into another computer and run the knoppix linux cd like I mentioned above (it's not too hard) and then transfer what's on the drive to one of the other drives on that computer.. If the drive you are trying to recover isn't recognized by linux most likely it has gone bad..

Also just a thought, but if the computer doesn't boot up at all, it could be just the power supply, or it could be the motherboard (if so, it's shot).. but if it was just the power supply, those are fairly inexpensive to replace..

Rob

Tubed,
Ok,  how about in english now  :) that makes my head hurt.

All 3 drives are seagate coming from the dead computer. The C: drive with the OS in it is the only one that will not boot up using the same method I mentioned in my first post.

I am trying to recover the drive by installing it in a new vista 64 system, not sure if it makes a difference but the drive I am trying to recover has 32bit xp-pro on it???

Seems to me,  having the operating system on the drive is the hick-up since the other drives I recovered were recognized right away just like an external hardrive.

As for the dead pc/computer: won't boot at all, light comes on for a second and then power vanishes.

It is not necessary to set any terminators or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/sec drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/sec drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/sec mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/sec drives.

Each drive on the serial ATA interface connects in a point-to-point configuration with the serial ATA host adapter. There is no master/slave relationship because each drive is considered a master in a point-to-point relationships. If two drives are attached on one serial ATA host adapter, the host operating system views the two devices as if they were both masters on two separate ports. This means both drives behave as if they are Device 0 (master) devices. Each drive has its own cable.
The jumper position to force the drive to SATA 1 speed (150 MB/sec) differs between Seagate drives and Maxtor drives. For the purposes of telling them apart, simply note the model number of the drive. If it begins with "ST" or "STM", see the jumper configuration for Seagate drives below. If any other model number, see the Maxtor model configuration.

Your serial ATA host adapter may provide master/slave emulation options. See your host adapter documentation for details.

P.S. make sure you burn knoppix to the cd with the iso file and burn the disk as a bootable disk (otherwise your computer won't recocnise it).. Also you may need to right click on the drive will be on the desktop once into the operating system and change the permissions to read/write (will be defaulted to read)..

If your computer boots up, and you have a cd drive, I would suggest trying to download (on another computer) a copy of knoppix linux.. This is a linux OS that will boot from a cd.. You can load the cd and boot your computer into a simple to use graphical linux environment.. It will automatically detect all drives connected to your computer and mount them.. You can tehn transer to an external drive or stick or if you have 2 cdroms burn it to disk.. If the drive is not completely toast, this should work.. Just googel knoppix linux.. Make sure you get the english version..

If that doesn't work, you will need to send it in for data recovery to a certified clean room facility.. Minimun $800 dollars..

Good luck, I've been there..

Rob

I had a computer die with 3 Sata hardrives in it. 2 slave drives and one with the OS on it.
I was able to rescue the files from the 2 slave drives by attaching to the Cd rom cables in a new machine. Computer recognized them like an external hardrive, very relieved:). Bad news is, this isn't working for the 3rd drive with the OS on it...hmmm?

Does anyone know how to get the info off the OS drive? Using the above method the computer won't boot.

Any advice welcome.
