I have been doing microstock for two yeas, and things have been pretty decent for me, however I noticed one interesting fact:

I do commericial architecture, models, and landscape, since I have been reasonably successful in architecture, so my most popular will be always architecture, so people have to dig deep into my portfolio to find landscape and model photos, as a result, the other photos are not getting the fair share of the exposure.

So do any one has more than one portfolio at one site? especially for for guys with a dominant catergory of images, if you don't have a separate portfolio, are you short change yourself? thanks.

StockXpert.com / Property Release on Residential Houses?
« on: November 17, 2007, 00:45 »
I just had bunch of rejections for not having property release, this is the first time I ever come across this, none of the other sites have asked me for that before, is it insane or it's the new rule?  ( by the way I got rejected a bundle from them recently on property release)
Here is one they just rejected but accepted every where else:

Bigstock.com / BigStock Sales
« on: November 17, 2006, 13:00 »
Ever since they changed the commission rate, I got a couple of $1 sales, but then it all stopped, I havn't had a single sale for 10 days with 250 pictures online, last month I  had 27 sales, almost 1/day.

So I am sitting at $29, waiting for my first ever payout with them, but no actions, this is the worst site I submitted to, I am not going to waste my time with them any more.

Anybody had a similar experience, or just me?

Off Topic / Grey Market Camera
« on: October 06, 2006, 12:58 »
I just bought a new Nikon D80 this week, when I received, I found out it's a grey market model, with no warranty, and during test shots, I found out 1 hot red pixel in two of 20 pictures under normal shooting conditions.

So I am not sure what is the right solution on this:

1. Do I return the camera and hoping for a replacement camera with no problem?
2. or do I return the camera and hoping for a refund ( if it's possible )
3. or just return the camera and have papal get the money back for me?
4. or just keep the camera and clone out any hot pixel if I find out any since IS will find out for me for sure.

thanks for your input.

Off Topic / Raw Workflow
« on: September 27, 2006, 16:23 »
I have been using Nikon Capture to do my raw workflow for a few years, and it's been pretty smooth.

Now I just upgraded from D100 to D80, I have to use a new workflow, at this time, I am not sure which one will give me the best workflow in terms of efficiency and quality, I am considering those:

Nikon Capture NX,
Adobe Lightroom Beta ( wonder what the final cost will be next year, but sounds like an exciting product )

Anyone has some experience with those two?

I have sometimes uploaded 50 or more at a time, never experienced similar problem, maybe because I just recently installed the Yahoo widget, does that interfere with my uploading?

Thanks for your help.

iStockPhoto.com / IS Uploading Problem
« on: September 21, 2006, 00:09 »
Finally I can submit 20 images after over 1 week wait, I inputed all the catergory and title, keywords in a 20 file batch, but the Image Manager keep give me an error message, " title can not have repeated words":(
After a search on the forum, found out that it's a known error, I don't know when they will fix, but my efforts are all wasted, need to reinput, that really sucks:(

Shutterstock.com / SS Sales
« on: September 19, 2006, 17:21 »
I know I don't have a big portfolio, so maybe the scenario is more like isolate.

I started one month ago with 250 images, and I am getting around 30 downloads per day, so the first half month of August, I finished with 321 downloads and 1 extented sale.

now going into Sept, I have been continuously uploading, as of today, I have 440 images online, but my download is going down, from average 27 per day to average about 13 downloads per day, so with double the image, but less than half the downloads?

The good thing is I am still making good money there, I have two extended sales today, one yesterday, so that will make up for the shortfall of downloads.

Anyone have experienced such uneven pattern?

iStockPhoto.com / Image Use
« on: August 29, 2006, 22:59 »
Hi, I got an email on my IS account today, I wasn't sure, so I forward to IS customer service for inquiry, they have not responded yet, what do you guys think, have you receive something like this before? How should I respond?

"Good afternoon!,

I purchased a high-resolution version of the your Fall Colors image for use on a postcard to promote my company.

I would like to place a low-res version of it on my site accessible to a few selected customers so that if they like the image from my postcard, they can download it for use as a screensaver for the fall season. It will only be available for a couple of months. If you would like I can credit you and/or add a link to you.

Would this be Ok with you?

Thanks for a lovely image and have a great day!"

Adobe Stock / FT Traffic
« on: August 11, 2006, 11:23 »
The last 4 days I have no sales from FT, the newly added 60 files after 3 days have no viewerships, while in the meantime the same files I got 3-5 downloads everyday from DT, anyone experience a slowdown in FT or it's just me? thanks.

General - Top Sites / Your Photos In Action
« on: August 01, 2006, 17:43 »
Probably most of you already know that in FT, there is a section called credit details, where you can click and find out who bought your image, yesterday i found out one of my least favorite image was used in a French Newsletter, too bad it's a PDF file, I can not show here, but here is the link:
http://www.petites-affiches-64.com/page1.pdf
the i van against Mount St Helens is my picture.

How do you find out other sites, I understand most sites don't give you the name of buyers, so for FT is a little strange, but goo to know who purchase your photos ;D

iStockPhoto.com / Istock Picky!
« on: August 01, 2006, 16:01 »
Ever since I jumped into the microstock business since 3 weeks ago, I got 70 approved at FT, 11 sales, 66 approved at DT, 11 sales but double the money, 18 approved at BSK, 2 sales, only 15 approved at Istock with no sales. ( with 3 5 star reviews )

The last batch of interior of a luxury house selling so well at FT and DT, but Istock cannot tolorete any artifacts and noise, I have to use some curves to bring up the dark area a little, then use neat image to clean it up, I guess I saved a few times along the way, casuing jpeg artifacts to show at 100% ( you have to check carefully ).

I guess I have to reprocess all the originals, trying to eliminate any possible artifacts, but it's hard for shots done in doors under dim light:(

Anybody else feel the pain as I do, no sales, but rejections?

Dreamstime.com / Exclusive Agreement
« on: July 28, 2006, 17:21 »
I noticed on this board, most of you submit to 3-8 different sites, which add lots of additional work for the same image, of course the arguement is that you get the payout 3-8 times better than with one site.

However I found out that by going exclusive with DT, you get 20 cents per image accepted, plus 10% more commision, one top guy who has 89000 downloads in 1 1/2 years only have 1200 images, each image average download 75 times, so does the website actally promote their own better than non exclusive contributors?

So if you get 20 cents more per upload, 10% more commission plus extra help in showcase your portfolio, you would have made more money spending less time keying keyword by using one site, does that make sense?

General Stock Discussion / Diminishing Returns
« on: July 14, 2006, 23:04 »
I am a newbie in stock photo, just joined FT, DT, Image Vortex, Bigstock, now when I look at the top websites here, almost all of them started in less than a year, and lots of them last year this time almost no image bank to talk about, now 6 months later, the top 3 all close to 1m images, that's quite a growth!

Image 5 years from now, each will have a portfolio of over 5 million, and your 200 or 2000 images will totally bury in such a large collection of images, how do you expect to make the same amount of money you make right now, besides most of you here not really making any serious money anyway.

so this is just my concern, I don't like the idea of uploading a couple of thousand of images within a year or two, only find that I am making less and less over time.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock Rejections
« on: July 12, 2006, 16:19 »
Hi, I am a newbie, I uploaded some pictures 6 month ago to Imagevortex (17), and never got a single sales( about 2-300 views for all images ), last week, I signed up with Fotolia, Shutterstock, Istock, bigstock, I submitted 13 pic to fotolia and get 12 approved, but the 10 I submitted to shutterstock got all rejected:
( I am still waiting to hear from Istock and Bigstock )

5 with reasons " noise at full size "
5 rejection with no reasons

My questions to you is:
1. does that mean I have 5 acceptable ones, or 10 are not acceptable?
2. Is Fotolia has far lower standard than Shtterstock?
3. If noise is a concern, ( very mini noise ) can I use noise ninju to clean it up and resubmit THREE MONTHS later?
4. Now the images have been dele from SS, how do I know which is good and which one is not acceptable?

thanks for your help.
( i started to wonder already " is $4 average per photo per year worth the trouble?"
