Take care of what you shoot!

I just got refused a whole batch of studio shoot of various bunch of banknotes isolated on white with the reason "+ Due to various international laws, we are not allowed to accept straight-on shots of paper money, as these could potentially be used for illegal counterfeiting purposes.".

Hope won't happen to you too...

Hi,

I keep everything in Extensis Portfolio (keywords, description, sales, agency name, agency code, etc.) organized in categories. Pictures are automatically cataloged once saved from PS and the software automatically "pull" all the needed info from the TIFFs in his own database - except agency and sales data - of course.
It is not a big  burden for me to add those info manually as I shoot only for three agencies and only one is Microstock. Five minutes every evening are enough to keep the whole stuff organized.

??? I am new at submitting my images on stock sites and I am finding that I am spending too much time cataloging my submitted images in word...

Is there anyone out there who can drop some tips as to what they track and how they do it without it eating a couple hours of their time?

General Macrostock / Re: agefotostock
« on: June 09, 2009, 07:23 »
Age Fotostock is a serious Agency who started many years ago with CD collections and traditional MR imagery.

I contribute in their streamline RM collection since 2001 and find them very professional.
Never had a single problem with payment / uploading / contributor relation / customer help.

Highly Recommended!

50 is normally intended as Megabyte Size of uncompressed image file in PS (number in lower left corner of PS window).

Ok,

50 means interpoled on 50MB....?
yep.

Yes, they maybe Image Exclusive but normally even if you are exclusive with one RM Agency this is not preventing you to be contributor to different RF agencies. As far as I know contracts require exclusivity only for RM-type imagery.

One reason for them being quiet is that most macro shooters shoot only for 1 or 2 agencies (compared to micro shooters that try out a dozen sites). Many of the macro agencies are also (image-)exclusive.

Hi All,

just wanted to share my story with all of you.
I started selling my images on RM agencies about 7 years ago. At that time I made some investigation and ended up to submit to AGE Fotostock and Marka. This latest one is Italian agency with mostly focus on national subjects. Since I am Italian I thought it was something good to contribute.
Then I build up a portfolio on both agencies and soon after revenue started to flow. There was not really a lot of money but, I know that it take a while to make a portfolio big enough to generate substantial revenue. So I where OK with it.

At a certain point of time I realized that I had in my archive more than 2000 images not suitable for RM, hence I went looking around for a new way to monetize them. The traditional RF archives around (some on CD, some others already online) did not triggered too much interest.
Then, after some online study I find out iStock and decided to give it a try. Now I am exclusive with about 1400 images on file.

About the RM agencies I don't know yet what will happen in the future but for the time being what I see is that my revenue from RM is falling while those from RF is ramping up.

On the quality aspects, Age Fotostock accept about 10% of my submitted images. I find them very selective on aspects like Composition, Lights, Marketability, Uniqueness,  not much about pixel peeping or chromatic aberration, distorsion, etc.

Now I continue to feed all three agencies (2 RM + 1 RF) with different materials and different timings. #1 priority for me now is to reach 5000 pictures portfolio on IS and see what's happen.

To see my portfolio over Age please click www.agefotostock.com, go to Image Search > Advanced Search and type "Antonio D'Albore" in Photographer name field.

Stock Photography is, of course, just a piece of my professional activity who involve also assignments and commercial shootings.

Hope my experience will be helpful to somebody else.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock exlusivity increases sales?
« on: May 29, 2009, 12:48 »
Hi YuLiang,

yes, going exclusive to IS might help for sure to increase your Sales.
Two factors here to consider: 50 images to be uploaded weekly, faster approval times.

In my specific case I decided to go exclusive since the first day with IS: I do already shoot RM for other agencies and need only another place where to promote my RF imagery.

Please do your own judgment on the matter and don't forget that as already pointed out, there are many people here making good business being NOT EXCLUSIVE and submitting good RF Stock images to many Agencies.

Hope will help.

Bye!

hi,
For those has gone exclusive , i'm interested to know if  your sales goes up on IS if u go  exclusive? thanks

iStockPhoto.com / IS CV Server down...
« on: May 21, 2009, 14:03 »
Hi All,

I am currently (May 21st, 2009 @ 21:02 GMT+2) experiencing an issue connecting to the IS CV Server with DeepMeta, it is reporting "Internal Server Error (500)".

Anybody experiencing similar issue?

I knew since 2002-03 but where very skeptical about it...

Then my regular RM sales started dropping and I decided to give MS a try...

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Exclusivity and POD sites
« on: May 20, 2009, 04:31 »
Hi Averil,

I believe that CafePress approach is slightly different. In fact if you read this...

Quote
CafePress.com provides an automated internet-based service to users, which they use to design and sell merchandise. We contractually prohibit our users from using the service to sell merchandise that infringes third party intellectual property rights (such as copyright, trademark, trade dress and right of publicity). We encourage intellectual property rights owners to contact us if they believe that a user of our service has infringed their rights. If you let us know that your rights are being infringed by one of our users we will (in our discretion) require that the user's content is removed from products and, if the user continues to infringe your rights (or infringes the rights of others) terminate the user's access to our services.

...will realize that CP is simply an "Automated Platfom" where users upload their own content.
Is not an agency who hold and promote your work hence the difference approach of IS legals...

Bye!

So why does istock allow exclusives to sell art through CafePress, which has EXACTLY THE SAME REQUIREMENT?

« on: May 20, 2009, 03:56 »
I think the matter is pretty simple...
If you read this piece from RB User Agreement:

Quote
You keep the copyright of any content you submit or upload to the website. In order to receive the RedBubble services you grant RedBubble a non-exclusive royalty free license to use and archive the content in accordance with or as reasonably contemplated by this agreement.

This is in clear breach of the conditions set by IS to be exclusive - "IS is your exclusive agency for all your RF imagery/content"...

Bye!

Shutterstock.com / Re: New Login Stinks
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:48 »
IMHO is not for security, it is purely to limit the workload on the servers generated by tools like picNiche and LookStat that automatically and periodically access to the site to read sales and other statistical data.

From the Agency point of view this kind of traffic is pure bandwidth waste as:
1- don't add new contents on the site
2- don't generate any profit.

From the security point of view the agency might potentially argue a vague breach of the agreement because it is normally declared that login data are for exclusive use of the contributor and that cannot be give to anybody else (potential misuse of those data and potential risk for the contributors itself). Anyway... this specific matter might be subject to many different interpretation and my brief note are for sure not exhaustive...

That's my two cents on the matter.

bye!

Antonio

If it increases security so much, then how come banks, don't require it? This is bureaucracy run amok.

I am probably wrong, but the building looks like it was a greenhouse that was converted to a studio.  It must have great ventilation to keep it cool.

It depend on how your Browser handle the sessions but, usually, once you are logged in, let's say first time in the morning, you should be able to refresh the page without any need of re-type the password and Captcha.

Antonio

It looks like Shutterstock has incorporated a new login procedure that forces us to type in a worded code. (13 letters long!) This stinks, and is completely user unfriendly. I'm on a Mac, and have the ability to automatically log in, to all of the stock agencies on my keychain. But Shuttersock now prevents that. Come on Shuttersock, what's the  point? What's next? Provide a photo ID, at log in? A fingerprint? In my opinion, this is security overkill.

- I am located in Germany and the Veer site shows up in german. That is fine most of the time, but occasionally  I would like to see the site in english. But I do not find any way to change the language.

I think the IS Premier Collection badge will shown up later when the collection will reach a substantial number of pics.

Nice shot, antonio. Although, I couldn't see an indication that it belongs to the Premiere collection?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Tripod on a plane
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:20 »
Tripod is OK in you checked-in baggage.

Ok to wrap it together with your clothes.

Remember to remove the head and wrap it separately as bumps during handling and travel might damage it.

Bye!

Im going to Dubai next week  , so I was wondering , could I get myself in any  any security  problems with  a tripod in my bag ?

I was thinking to put it in the large bag that I will check in and wrap it with  clothes , and take may bag pack with camera and lenses with me.

For really efficient & fast transfers from memory cards to PC/Mac I recommend:

- CF SanDisk Extreme IV
- CF Reader SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader

Pls note that the effective transfer rate depend from the combination CF + Reader and therefore the suggested reader make sense only if used with the mentioned CF or alike (Lexar Professional 233x series and any other CF compliant with UDMA Mode 4).

Also note that the advertised transfer rate published by the manufacturers (SanDisk, Lexar and others) is meant in lab environment and with 1MB = 1.000.000 of bytes. In real life, the 40MB/sec claimed by SanDisk for their Extreme IV combo translate in actual 35-37 MB/sec.

In case u have many CF's to be transferred into your workstation just buy two CF FireWire Reader and do double CF's copy in parallel. In that case the transfer speed of each single reader will drop down of 4-5% buy it will still make the difference...

As far as concern for the portable HD with integrated CF reader, I am very happy with NEXTO (http://www.nextodi.com/en/) products: I have bought already two of them and found very fast and reliable. Moreover they can be powered with external battery pack for emergency and also by means of a standard car lighter (I am using connected to a portable rollable solar panel).

bye!
