My first time trying to upload an image...my apologies if I don't do this correctly.  (The preview doesn't appear to function when uploading an image.)

He's definitely trying to put his best foot forward by promoting himself with the publicity.

Newbie Discussion / Re: why can't I start a new thread?

Thanks Karimala....I've tried that a zillion times.  Let me try and post a screen shot...what am I missing?  (and red faced...I just realized I posted the PS/amputee thread in Newbie by accident...because I never could get how to start a new thread in general.)

Hmmm....can't see how to upload an image...I guess it has to be image hosted first?

It will be interesting to see how the NYT's report their interview with the model if/when they locate him.  Is this type of editing in the realm of "sensitive use" or no?   I suspect since they want to interview him so badly, they are looking for him to say how he is outraged and angered by the manipulation of his photo.  But in the stock world, this is fair use.

34
I find it interesting...and disconcerting...that the New York Times is putting out an "all points bulletin" to identify the model.

35
OK...so the photographer is covered.

37
Is Image Source a Getty-owned company?  Because the original article has a Getty copyright for the same photo.

Heres what we know so far: the photo seems to have been taken in a studio in 2008 by a New York-based photographer, Morten Smidt, who sold it to the stock photo agency Image Source, which has it listed in its portfolio as portrait of overweight man.
A poster of a man who supposedly lost his leg to diabetes has been going up in the subways of New York.ReutersThe more familiar version of the photo.

Mr. Smidt says he never knew the mans name. Image Source says it cannot divulge it.

Image Sources portfolio of the man includes 12 photos of him. He is fairly flexible: in one of the pictures, hes doing a modified split.

What do they mean he "sold" the photo to Image Source?  I'm not familiar with that agency.

"When city officials announced the campaign on Jan. 9, they did not let on that the man shown whose photo came from a company that supplies stock images to advertising firms and others was not an amputee and may not have had diabetes. The city did not identify the man, and efforts to reach the agency that supplied the photo were unsuccessful. The photographer who took the picture, Morten Smidt, said he did not know the mans name.

Mr. Smidt said on Tuesday that he had not seen the advertisement. In response to a description of it, he said, Well, it is an illustration now, clearly not the picture I did.

OK...editing my last post to say that I did stumble across the new thread button, but only because I got dumped there after posting on an existing thread.  How do you navigate directly to the page where the new thread button is?  I've read through the Newbie thread a few times and do not see it stated clearly.  Sorry...just frustrated with time lost searching.

I've started a new thread before but for the life of me, I can't figure it out again.  Where is the new topic button?

I wonder if those laid off received some type of "golden parachute" offer of a bonus to not trash-talk iS in return?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Nikon D3S Focus Issues
« on: January 17, 2012, 16:54 »
From dpreview.com

Another minor annoyance (and, for the record, one that the D3S shares with the Canon EOS 1D series of DSLRs), is that the AF-ON button on the vertical grip at the base of the camera is very easy to depress accidentally. When the camera is held in the landscape orientation, the palm of the right hand can easily slip over and onto the button, and depending on how you have AF-ON set up, this may either start the AF hunting unexpectedly, or stop it from tracking in continuous AF mode. Both are disconcerting, and neither is desirable. Disabling the vertical grip also disables the vertical AF-ON button but it's a poor solution unless you're committed to shooting 100% in the landscape orientation.

This isn't a new issue - anyone that shoots with a D3 or D3X will be familiar with the problem - but it is a shame that Nikon hasn't taken the opportunity to do anything about it.

General Stock Discussion / Nikon D3S Focus Issues
« on: January 17, 2012, 16:34 »
I just bought the Nikon D3S body and the was having focusing issues.  Called Nikon support and explained my problems (outlined below) and they told me to return it to seller.  I did.  Received a second body a few days ago from a different vendor.  Same problems!!!  I even took the body to our best local camera shop to try out the Nikkor 70-200mm and not only did it have focusing issues, but the AF stopped working completely after firing off a few test shots! I had to reset the camera body to factory default and start over.

I went through Ken Rockwell's custom settings item by item and reset the camera a third time.   I'm still having issues where focus isn't tack sharp, and when shooting on S mode (to control focal point) the camera keeps trying to focus on its own and fires off shots even when I haven't depressed the shutter.

I've been reading and reading forums all over and am finding all kinds of focusing issues with the D3S.  I am thinking I need to stick with my D300s as this camera simply isn't performing correctly in MY hands, anyway.

So...in reading even more just now as a last ditch effort, I saw a comment about watching out for the AF-ON button on the vertical.  I just picked up the camera as I would to shoot and I realize that the palm of my right hand has been depressing that button inadvertently!!!!!!!!  That explains A LOT!  I am a female shooter and I think maybe this body is too hefty for my hands because in order for me to have a good grip on the D3S my palm does often settle on the AF-ON button in the lower right corner of the back body.

The AF-ON Vertical button does not have an "off" feature...you can only customize it as to how you want it to work, so I think I am toast.  At this point I am either going to have to retrain myself on how to grab and grip the camera body, or else send it back.

I'm very sad (and frustrated) because I do a lot of low light commercial shooting on the fly and the ISO range is what made me invest in the camera...if it worked as advertised (in my hands) then it SHOULD have been perfect for me.

I had two yesterday which added $11.40 to the increasing ODs and subs.  Still waiting for the return of the crazy ELs!  ;D

Just as well...just like with today, I don't usually open them anymore so I missed that it was the last issue.  I still remember that they sent one out at the same time as the big clawback (I think it was??  It was at the height of some big blowup) and I thought, "Is this really a good time to be sending out a supposedly feel-good newsletter?"

Dreamstime.com / Re: Do you also have very few EL's on DT?
« on: January 11, 2012, 20:40 »
Not only are they few and far between, but the payout for DT EL's is disappointing.  FT used to come fairly steady but ELs there have slowed.  iS....I don't even consider much any more.  SS is definitely the leader in every kind of download, ESPECIALLY ELs which are regular.

ELs not as crazy as the previous couple of months, but ODs are back to blazing today and I'm very happy with that (sub sales have been strong like usual, but ODs were soft until today).  I hope the ELs catch up as well!  SS rocks!
