General Stock Discussion / Does keyword spamming even work?
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:39 »
I've spent some time sifting through the illustrations on DT and IS lately trying to find some unapproached angles to the more popular themes.  In doing so I have found how horrible spammed keywords are, even at a site like IS that really cracks down on bad keywords.

What is the motivations for this.  Do some sellers really think that a buyer searching for education icons is going to buy your illustration of a bear because it's just that cute?

Keywording is my least favorite part (as is probably of most or us) of submitting.  I've found my files need a max of ten to fifteen keywords, beyond that the keywords become so tangential to what the file is that even if some one was searching for that term my file wouldn't be that interesting.

So while I doubt anyone would come out an claim that they spam, does this method actually increase sales or just frustrate buyers?

Cameras / Lenses / Advice on wide angle lens for Nikon
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:53 »
I've got a week long trip to Torres del Paine National Park in Chile coming up in December and would like to have a nice ultra wide angle lens to take with me.

I've been looking at the newer Nikon 10-24 and it seems to have gotten some decent reviews but the ~$900 price tag is a bit lofty for a broke grad student such as myself.  Apparently the new tamron 10-24 is a cheeper but the quality coincides with the $450 price.

Does anyone have experience with any of the other wide angle lenses or the Nikon 10-24 that might be able to share some valuable advice?  What's going to be the best bang for the buck?

I'd prefer to spend less than $600 but am seriously thinking about the nikon. ;D

Cheers!

Illustration - General / Clipartof, how are people doing?
« on: August 05, 2009, 16:16 »
Jamie got my first batch of illustrations online today and I'm sure it will take a little while for them to hit the search results but I'm curious how some of the other new contributors are doing there.  There was quite a bit of excitement over them several weeks ago but haven't heard anything new, but it sounds like they're pretty backlogged with new images.

I've uploaded a couple of illustrations and when the jpg preview shows there has been a color shift but only with certain images.  It seems brighter colors are uploading as a nauseating day glow color that makes me sea sick just to look at.  I'm working in RGB in illustrator and PS, and the files look fine in both.

I haven't been doing anything out of the normal in my work flow and upload methods but I have begun to use swatches from kuler.

I've had colors shift to a slightly duller tone before but not this, anyone know what's going on?  I'm guessing it has something to do with the swatches I'm using but one color of one swatch is affected in one jpg and not another.

I'm on a PC running Vista BTW.

Hi,
I've been doing vectors for a short while now, I started off with Inkscape and some simple designs, all of which have been accepted at FT.  I finally got Illustrator and since I have submitted SVG made in Illustrator not a single one has been accepted, always with the same rejection reason, out of focus/poor lighting etc.  The thumbnail looks fine while the file is pending but not a single one has passed inspection.  Does anyone know what SVG settings the files need to be saved at prior to uploading?  This sucks I finally get to use gradient meshes, envelope distort and all the other cool things in AI and somethings amuck.  I've searched the FT forums and there are several threads about this filled with contributors complaining about FT not answering this exact question.

BTW I'm fairly sure this isn't a quality issue, a lot of the early vectors accepted where simplistic crap, these AI illustrations have been much more complex.  I'd like to attach the files so you can see them but I'm not sure how to do that...

« on: March 06, 2009, 21:27 »
Not sure if anyone else has noticed this buy you can get a Nikon D200 body from Best Buy for $599 right now.  Not sure if they have the deal in the stores or if it's online only.  I don't remember when it was discontinued buy I'm assuming they won't last much longer.

Illustration - General / Vector musings and a little rambling
« on: March 02, 2009, 13:18 »
So another post about one hit wonders has made me think about selling vectors.  I've been doing vectors for a couple of months now on Inkscape.  I've had a couple that have really taken off, especially on SS, at least comparatively speaking.  Now most of my vectors are pretty simplistic, mostly stylized objects, isolated objects and cartoony things.  In looking through the portfolios of some of the illustrators that are active on this site I've noticed that the general subject matter tends to be the same.  Floral backgrounds, icons, grunge, seamless backgrounds and backgrounds in general.  Most of these illustrations are exquisitely done and look like they took a lot of time.  I've also noticed that a lot of the more complex (looking) vectors seem to have very few dls.  I'm interested in the opinions of those of you who produce vectors and what the best sellers tend to be.  I'd love to make some of those beautiful floral backgrounds but is another one in a sea of thousands going to be worth the effort?  At this point though it doesn't really matter since I work in Inkscape and gradients don't translate into EPS, however I can get AI from school for about $200, but as a poor graduate student I really need to justify that cost.

Here's a link to my SS account if you feel like looking.

General Stock Discussion / Any one used Carbonite?
« on: January 22, 2009, 22:40 »
I heard an add on the radio for Carbonite, an online file back up and recovery service.  $50/year with unlimited storage and it automatically backs up new files several times a day.  Geek forum reviews were mixed and unhelpful so I was wondering if any here has tried it / liked it / hated it and why.

Thanks!

General Photography Discussion / Bidding for photography job
« on: January 13, 2009, 17:37 »
Hello,
I've been invited to bid on a project and I was curious if anyone has any experience with bidding jobs.  The basis of the project would involve the following: an hour driving each way to and from the project site and ten pictures total.  No post-processing, organization or printing is requested.  I figure the job would take me a maximum of three hours including travel time.  I was thinking of charging $25/hour with $0.55 per mile driven.  Please, anybody with experience weigh in on this, I really appreciate it. :)

Off Topic / Don't take it too seriously
« on: November 25, 2008, 16:20 »
I've never been much to participate in online forums however I now find myself checking into MSG almost every chance I get.  I've learned a lot on here and have enjoyed the camaraderie that exists between fellow photographers.  I'm a newbie, barely over the line from beginner to intermediate, but enjoy it none the less.  I'm working on a PhD and have little time to devote to the time consuming process of editing, key-wording, uploading, categorizing etc. etc., especially when taking pictures is much more fun, but I do enjoy the occasional payout.  One thing I've learned since entering adulthood, some dozen years ago, is that adults, no matter how educated, cultured, experienced, learned or wise they may be, can be no more than older looking versions children.

With all that said I want to give a great big hand to all those on this forum who feel their special intelligence and ability is not given the credit it is due.  Hopefully you know the types I'm talking about; the smart-assed comments, pontification, soapbox on a pedestal types; I love you all.  While the first reaction of some might be to take offense to your purposefully insulting attempt at wit and humor, I love it.  In fact I feed on it.  That old adage " there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers;"  well bollocks to that, I say screw em' all.  If your superior knowledge and experience surpasses that of another, then the lesser should be brought down another peg or two.  Especially in such a personal and intimate landscape as an online forum.  So I say cheers to you Mr. Know it all and not afraid to tell every one about it, and cheers to you Mrs. (or Ms.) your idiotic post has wasted so much of my time I must write a impudent response to prove what a waste of time it was.  Your devout dedication to the discipline and delightfully insipid remarks make my day.  Long gone are the days of humble and humility, now we must step on the backs of others, and it makes us feel good.

And finally, a sincere cheers to the the vast majority of you on this forum who contribute significantly and selflessly, it is in you that the community exist.

General Stock Discussion / Creating Silhouettes
« on: November 17, 2008, 23:29 »
I was curious.

When tracing pictures to create silhouettes for vector files do the photos traced have to be yours?  Can you download pictures from free stock sites to use as a model?

Cheers!

Dreamstime.com / Long time for image views???
« on: October 13, 2008, 16:25 »
Hi,
After waiting the wonderful seven days for a batch of 25 photos to be reviewed, the 23 that were accepted have been online for four days all with out a single view.  This has never happened before and I was curious if anyone else has had this problem.

I've also noticed that my sales there appear to have run into a brick wall.  I'm a newbie but I've been $3.60 away from my first pay out for almost a month!!!

Dreamstime.com / Do RAW files sell?
« on: October 06, 2008, 15:42 »
Hi,
I'm a relative newbie and just noticed that RAW file sells for 12 credits.  I'm wondering if it's worth it to upload RAWs to all of my files or, seeing as I have minimal time for stock, should I just go out and take pictures instead.  Any opinions?

Newbie Discussion / Should uploading slow as sales slow?
« on: September 18, 2008, 20:55 »
I'm relatively new in micros.  I've been visiting this forum for quite a while and have heard much of the summer slow down.  I've finally got full time internet access at home, a rather nice studio set up, and have just returned from a couple phenomenal photo trips.  Long story short, should I hold off on uploading the 200+ pictures I have ready to go so that they are new and fresh on the sites when sales pick up, or upload them now and hope they don't get lost to obscurity as newer files are uploaded.  I know it's best to slowly upload to SS, which is not a concern to me as I haven't been accepted there yet, but what about the others?  DT seems steady regardless of uploads, but what about IS, StockXpert, 123, and FT?

Thanks!
