Newbie Discussion / Re: Things I have learned
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:32 »
Could be worse, I've been having a few focus issues lately, went to get my eyes checked and found they'd deteriorated to a point I can no longer buy contact lenses and if they keep going the way they are I'll be eligible for partial sighted status soon. If anything though it makes me feel confident that if I can take a good picture now, once they send my new bottle bottom glasses, I'll be awesome :) If I end up too blind, then I'll sell myself as the blind photographer, you'll never get me out from behind my lens, oh no.. never!

I'm starting to seriously regret my choice to not buy the a350 now, Sony seems to be doing an excellent job with their cameras. I'm actually considering changing while I still have only a tiny selection of Pentax equipment, at least then I'd not have a huge case filled with Minolta lenses and cokin stuff going to waste.

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Operation Photo Rescue

What a wonderful site, it's things like this that restore my faith in humanity. I have piles of damaged pics that I'm starting to repair after a small flood and it breaks your heart to lose those precious pictures, it's certainly something special to be helping give memories back to people like this.

Crestock.com / Re: Crestock Rejects?
« on: October 27, 2008, 19:23 »
I'll edit since my comment might have seemed rude and possibly I seemed snarkier than I meant to, but generally the gist was that I've experienced rejections that make no sense, Custom rejects with no explanation etc.

Crestock.com / Re: What is happening at Crestock?
« on: October 27, 2008, 19:21 »
I find it amusing that my images sat in a month long queue there without review, but the moment I made a comment about it here where I know a staff member? reads that suddenly within a day every single one gets rejected, heck I know I'm not the greatest and some of my pictures deserve refusal but some of those pictures were accepted by bigger and better stock sites.
I'm throwing in my hat already with this site, I'd rather go where I believe the reviews actually look at my images and give me real reasons apart from - custom. I'll be off to do my remove my account mail right now.

While I don't like to put my eggs in one basket, I don't believe in supporting a bad site for the sake of a few extra pennies.

If you end up with a toss up between the Pentax or Sony, certainly go with the Sony. I bought the K200d for my move into digital and the fringing is awful, I'm wasting so much time tidying up noise etc on my pictures. Plus pentax glass isn't cheap even with second hand old lenses, whereas Minolta lenses are a lot easier to pick up at the moment though with Sony's new 26?mp camera I can see them becoming more expensive. While I adore pentax glass, I have a Minolta collection with a lovely old SLR that I use when I'm shooting for fun and the quality is still fantastic. The other advantage with the Sony is the liveview which I so badly miss when I'm trying to set up macro shots.

New Sites - General / Re: redbubble experience?
« on: October 26, 2008, 21:56 »
I use redbubble, for me, well my work isn't arty really so I'm not shocked that my offerings haven't moved. I have friends who have sold a reasonable amount of cards on their but prints are rare sales. The big thing that sells are the t-shirts, I keep meaning to sit with my tablet and work on some shirt designs but time  >:(.  Mostly I use redbubble for the communities, the challenges give me fun things to do and I find that unlike say deviantart, the userbase are older and give better comments and critique.

It does take rechargeable aa batteries and I can usually do a hard day of shooting to run them down, there is a battery pack but my pennies are saving for a decent macro for isolation work, there's not much profit in wildlife shots for me.

Pixmac / Re: Pixmac reaches 1,000,000 images?!
« on: October 26, 2008, 16:04 »
I'd looked at this site before but the FAQ put me off.. the spelling doesn't reek of professionalism.

" Please notice, that we will not make the payout without you will click on the buttom"

"If there are more poople in the picture"  ;D

In fact, it might be fun to print out copies of the FAQ http://www.pixmac.com/infocenter/name/FAQ-photographers and then keep them on your desk to use as a wordsearch/spot the mistake while having a coffee break.

I upload my memory cards every evening and format straight away as I tend to carry my kit everywhere much to my hubby's disgust as I keep whining that the day I don't take it ready for action will be the day something amazing happens and I'll miss the shot of a lifetime.

Batteries, My pentax takes aa so I tend to have a stock of batteries I charge when I have a big day ahead of me, otherwise they just run down during day to day bits and bobs and I resort to duracell.

Crestock.com / Re: Review times at Crestock slowing down?
« on: October 25, 2008, 14:52 »
Out of 14 stock sites, this is the only one I still haven't seen any reviews on, I uploaded around the 29th of september  :( Hope it's worth it all.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have a Myspace account so when it goes through I'll happily test it out and find out what I can.

Mostphotos.com / Re: Trouble with uploads
« on: October 25, 2008, 14:28 »
Right now I'm a relative newcomer to the stock world so for me it seems wiser to get my images out there on as many sites as I can while I test the waters and learn my way round, MP while I can see isn't likely to make me any money and the voting system is flawed, it is giving me input on the few pictures I've got and helping me try to find which path I wish to take in regards to subjects. I'm sure as I find my way and hopefully get good enough to go with some of the bigger companies I'll cut myself down and be more selective.

Between 7 and 50 keywords, most the big sellers are spamming the keywords but I guess if you're raking in the pennies for them it doesn't matter.  :(

The standard upload form is broken too now, I upload and the pictures vanish into the never never...

I'm starting to believe that they just randomly click and don't even look at the images anymore, especially when it comes down to the keywording. FT is so far my least favourite for allowing keyword abuse. Perfect example is this picture with an invisible buffalo dog playing a trumpet. http://en.fotolia.com/id/9925180

I sell my images as greeting cards on RedBubble and make a lot more, potentially I can see a tiny trickle of pennies from this but MySpace isn't that popular amongst the young folk anymore, they are all using facebook these days. The 0.06 is just too low really.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: You have a backup camera?
« on: October 13, 2008, 14:12 »
My backup is a bridge camera, the Fuji Finepix S5800, most the features of an SLR combined in one. There are times it does a better job of things and I'd not be without it.

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Testing Pentax K20D
« on: October 11, 2008, 15:51 »
How are you finding performance under low light, the K200D is generally a wonderful camera for me and I love it, but dim lighting is very noisy and I'm spending more time than I'd hoped dealing with the noise and blue fringing. It's killing me as I'm an old faithful to Pentax but I'm starting to look at the huge collection of Minolta lenses I've got and wonder about the performance of the Sony just so I can save the fortune on new lenses.

You just saved my life :D I was sat moaning about straps last night to my other half as I'm forever moaning about it either cutting my neck to wear for easy shooting or making my camera inaccessable to me when it's under my arm, the quick release is also something that is a major pain for me, I flip between tripod and free a lot and having to work around the huge standard issue strap is a pain in the rear.

I'll be going shopping now :)

Cameras / Lenses / Re: You have a backup camera?
« on: October 10, 2008, 09:20 »
It depends what your field is, I kept my previous camera as it's good for close up moments and my main camera tends to have the zoom lens on when I'm out and about, saves me a lot of time to just swap cameras rather than rummage through my bag, switch lenses, put caps/covers back on. I find that out and about photographers (wildlife/press) tend to carry two cameras generally, time is limited and the perfect shot could pass you by. Obviously if you are studio based then the speed probably isn't a priority and the money from it would fund other equipment that would help you work faster/better.

While you say you'd never consider cheating, knowing she felt the same would obviously cause feelings to change and really before you even think about opening yourself up to your cousin you need to think long and hard about your future with your current partner, is it really worth the risk of losing her and ending up having a broken relationship/family for something that could all be "grass is greener".

I was crazy about a guy when I was a teen, the feelings stayed for eight years and a chance meeting resulted in us going for a drink, I confessed having a huge crush as a teen, he said he felt the same, the relationship resulting lasted less than a month as we both found that the dream and fantasies were much better than the reality.

If you have to do it, say you had a childish crush and give yourself the way out of laughing it off as a childhood thing, but I strongly advise you to look to the future and not live for the past.

I've only been a member a few days and I've been reading up on the past posts and learning a lot from people. MIZ has taught me more from his posts than I've learnt reading the so called top sellers sites and its a sad loss that I'll never get to banter with him and experience his wit here as I hopefully get to know people and learn more. There are few people that touch so many lives and he's certainly helped so many to find their feet in the stock world.

I recently used photobox for some 8x10's to use as a portfolio, the service is good and the turnaround was fast but... they do like to colour correct your photos for you which is a complete pain when you have worked hard to get a specific tone and effect.
