Cameras / Lenses / Expodisc - anybody using it?
« on: October 19, 2008, 17:54 »
I'm curious - are any of you using the Expodisc in its various iterations?  If so, what are your experiences with it vs. the camera's on-board settings?

Thx, all!

Cameras / Lenses / Re: What was your first camera and the next?
« on: October 19, 2008, 17:45 »
My first camera was a Kodak Brownie.  uh.......does this make me an old fart, or what?

Kodak Brownie
Kodak Pony
Kodak Instamatic
Pentax Spotmatic F
Pentax MX, LX, ME Super,A645, etc
Pentax *ist DS
Pentax K100D

Saving my pennies for a K20D.  It's on order.  But I still shoot with film.  (film?  whuzzat?!)

I currently use a Nikon S210 for my p & s.  VERY nice camera, and inexpensive, ~$180 US.  It's loaded with features, compact, uses SD cards, 8mp, auto-face detection, etc.  It does use a rechargeable battery, but I don't find that a detriment, as I can get about 375-400 shots per charge with average use of the flash.  Plus, it came in a purple (plum) color, and I'm a purple FREAK!

Just my opinion........ :)

...  I've seen DSLRs dropped onto concrete from 4 ft and sustain nothing more than a broken filter.  On the other hand, I've seen relatively new DSLRs go irreparable simply from using an off-brand media card.

good warning hrhportia, goes to show being stingy on important things like media card is silly.
it's like buying rethread tires for your porsche or mercedes, isn't it?
you save a few dollars and end up paying a whole lot more. fool's economy.

In my years in camera retail, I've seen horror stories that no one could imagine.  One guy had his camera nuked in a microwave by his grandson, another one put the camera on the tailgate of his truck and then backed over it, and the classic:  a guy with a Nikon D70 put a Sandisk III card in his camera and it totally fried.  I've been able to rescue a lot of Nikon D70's that have been subject to this by doing a flash upgrade on the firmware, but this one was toast.

Most of you already know this, so I beg pardon in advance for flogging a dead horse, but Nikon tests their cameras with Lexar media cards, whereas Canon tests with Sandisk.  I know of no instance where a Canon went bad when used with a Lexar card, but the reverse is endemic.  If you are using Nikon equipment, stick with Lexar media!  I could go on and on with horror stories, but I think I've made my point.

I shoot with Pentax cameras.  I swear by the Panasonic hi-speed cards.  I've got 2 that I've re-formatted at least 100 times each and they're still kickin'.

Pentaxian for 40+ years,

I do have a backup camera, even though mine are insured.  It takes 6-8 weeks for the average DSLR repair, during which time you are without a camera.  I do have a couple of P & S's, but the quality just isn't there for the most part.  There are "crossover" exceptions, like the Canon G11, or a couple of the Fuji models, but I wouldn't regard them as substitutes for a DSLR.  Having been in the camera retail business for quite a while, I've seen everything from soup to nuts in terms of damage.  I've seen DSLRs dropped onto concrete from 4 ft and sustain nothing more than a broken filter.  On the other hand, I've seen relatively new DSLRs go irreparable simply from using an off-brand media card.

Adobe Stock / Re: accepted images at Fotolia
« on: October 18, 2008, 14:17 »
I'm emerald on Fotolia and I have seen a HUGE increase in rejections there over the past few months.

My acceptance rates at the other sites remain in the 90% range while they have dropped to around 60% on Fotolia.  I have no idea why Fotolia all of a sudden hates my work but take some comfort in the fact that I am not the only one.

Still making good money there, but the randomness of the rejections is pretty annoying.  Thank goodness there are other sites and I am not dependent on the whims of Fotolia's reviewers.

I've had the same experience.  Fotolia seems to hate my work lately, too, but I'm making good money on the images I have there.  Go figure...

Thank God I'm not exclusive, either.

I have found, however, that if I submit a batch of similar items, say, different piles of gemstones, I stand a higher chance of being rejected for "similar content" then I do when I submit batches culled from different shoots.  I can always submit the others later, if I choose.

I finally talked my wife into shooting more stock photos and am helping her get her port into order....

How do I delete an image on istock?  I've looked all over and can't find the delete button.  I need to delete some she uploaded some time ago.

Thanks,
Steve

Uh, dude.......... yer wife can figure it out for herself.

Signed,

Yer wife!!! ;D

I shoot a lot of jewelry and gemstones.  Most of the names of rarer gemstones aren't in anybody's database and come back either omitted or with the infamous "incorrect keyword" or "incorrect spelling" rejection.  Uh, boys, just because you don't know what it is doesn't mean the jewelry trade doesn't, either.  sheesh!!  gimme a break, here! >:(

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Can inspections become more inane?
« on: October 18, 2008, 13:49 »
After months of trying to make sense of the "rejection" process, I've finally decided that there IS none.  It all depends on who is reviewing and whether or not the image appeals to said reviewer.  I've re-submitted stuff several times and the images either make it or they don't.  But the "over-filtering" bit with a CPL is especially irritating in a state that has a lot of sun and water.  Whaddo they want us to do, anyway?  Blow out the image entirely?  So......I just shoot, process, submit, etc., and leave my ego offline.   ;)

Lucky you, I usually get over filtered, which sometimes is very amusing, when I go to great lengths to do virtually nothing to the shot except for some minor sharpening of the RAW then reduce the opacity to 15%.  I almost think that using a polarizer in the bright Florida sky makes them think its over filtered.   ARGH!

Amen.  I live in FL also and use a circular polarizer a lot.  If I had a dime for every shot that gets rejected for "over-filtering" I wouldn't have to work at this at all.  grrr!!

The only reason I like MP is because it's a good place to store stuff online free of charge.  flickr and pbase and other similar sites charge you by the month.

Has anybody else experienced problems uploading to mp lately?  I've got a whole load in my FTP queue but they aren't going anywhere.

« on: October 17, 2008, 10:29 »
Unfortunately, I think that subs will become more and more prevalent as time goes on.

I'm afraid I have to agree.  Overall sales this month are down for me, but subs are up.  I really don't want to opt out of subs, because that's rather like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  OTOH, I feel like I'm giving my hard work away.

I'm in the same boat - sales, but the payment history seems to be lagging.  Hopefully the upgrade will catch up with this.
