Looking forward to it. I recalled the last raise one year ago  ;D It felt great to get a 25% raise second month into the job.

Adobe Stock / Re: Totally crashing on Fotolia
« on: April 05, 2007, 12:22 »
I'm experiencing the same thing. Towards the end of 2006 very consistent downloads everyday, then two months ago, they dropped to a trickle.

Hope things pick up again soon for me, I was beginning to think Fotolia will take off very well.

cheers.

FYI, Alien Bees no longer ship to anywhere outside the US, and don't do a 240V version at all.

Dang!

New Sites - General / Re: is it possible to make a living?
« on: January 21, 2007, 09:39 »
Hi Andrew,

Based on your experience as mentioned, you should be able to reach your target. I believe, ShutterStock, iStockPhoto, Fotolia and DreamsTime are the top earners for most (and myself).

Take a look around for the best sellers in the various sites, and you should have a feel of what niche you can target, and work on the numbers.

Like Mikko, I'm also doing this as a hobby, and I think your target is achievable.

cheers.

Microstock News / Re: ImageManager phrase update
« on: September 29, 2006, 16:04 »
i have heard that ftp has serious security issues.  I think alamy for exampe which is going to begin accepting ONLY 'over the internet' submissions, will not be using ftp, but something else.

IMO, there aren't many issues with transferring images over FTP since it is binary data and not as easy to snoop as character data.  Plus, there isn't much gained by stealing an image (as opposed to a password, account #, etc).

Besides that, they could always implement SFTP or FTP over SSL, which would make the transfer totally secure.

FYI, FTP sends login information in plain text, so yes, one can steal the userid & password.

SFTP is more secure, but not totally secure, because the key will still have to be made known publicly. I won't deal with the details, as I'm not totally familiar.

Yes, it can be very easy for a person to grab sensitive data by 'snooping'/intercepting an ftp session. Especially if they are on the same network as you are.

Some companies are not willing to take that kind of risk, where their photographers are subjected to less secure connectivity, and I can't say I blame these companies for sticking to their stand, they have a valid reason for being 'stubborn'.

I'm happily using ftp on other sides, but have also noted how some sites do some 'preventive' (definitely not foolproof) measures to avoid security breaches. Dreamstime: You are supposed to turn OFF ftp uploads when you're done with your uploading session, FeaturePics: Note the complicated login directory.

Nope. IS looks about the same to me. I wish my sales at StockXpert would double though ;-)

My sales went down from the moment the keyword issue started.
And stockexpert nearly doubled
has anyone experienced the same thing?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock Announcement

There is no way that they can guarantee that you won't have to edit your images, because there is no way that a computer can know what you meant by "orange" (fruit, color, or both), or "doc" (document or doctor), or "in" (Indiana, within) or a myriad of other words in the English language.  So Bitter's words are just that, words (and not tags)...

Well, I haven't been in this long enough to know if those are just empty promises, thought I'd just relay the message here. As a programmer myself, I can see the glaring mistakes be solved through coding, the rest, probably needs manual intervention to a certain extent.

In any case, I can understand the despair of those whose significant income comes from IS, and esp the exclusives.

Like most, I'm cannot comprehend the sudden system migration, without prior warning. Can't say if there wasn't some beta test being done, maybe there was, perhaps, not thorough enough, and not involving the contributors (speculating here) in the beta-test (if there was any) was probably also not a good idea.

Hope everything works out right for everyone, eventually.

The official update thread from IS.

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=39923&page=1

Some reassurances, and updates on what's going on behind the scenes. It will take a while for things to sort out, but at least IS says we don't have to go to edit the tags for all our images.

Still waiting for the dust to settle.

cheers.
