I started in late 2006 with zero photography experience. I just uploaded some nature shots I had taken with my first DSLR and was surprised a few got accepted. I thought if I could get some shots accepted maybe I could make a little $ on the side and things kind of went from there.

Not too happy about this. I have spent lots of time uploading five photos at a time to Snapvillage. Its going to suck if my photos are not transferred over, even more so because I have been getting regular sales at Snapvillage.

Travis, if you are getting sales at SV then I doubt you are one of the ones they will be letting go of. I imagine they will be cutting accounts that are inactive or else have low quality images that don't sell.  Seems logical, anyway...

Good point Lisa, I hope your right.

1) We've been reviewing all accounts and this process will be wrapped up soon. Existing Snap accounts are not automatically grandfathered in. Not all existing Snap accounts will be transferred but most will.

I hope this all works out.

Man, I blew a whole weekend on Google street view. I found it by accident when trying to get directions somewhere. Its pretty cool, I just wish they had more photos for Sequim, WA, you can only see it from the highway.

Looks like that they are down already for a couple of days. Maybe they are gone ...
Hmmm... that is strange. Not a good sign. I stopped uploading to these guys awhile ago.

I use the tripod in the studio and for night scene obviously. Never outside because the sun give steady shots by itself. I never shoot during cloudy or rainy days because of lightning.

If I never shot outside when the weather was crappy I would never get to shoot outside. lol

I just received a payment from thephotostorage.  $19.40 - I thought they had a $100 payout limit?

Well, I'm happy.

Congrats!

Do you upload via ftp? Have you had any problems uploading?

Fotolia seems to be hit or miss.  Some people do great there, others make next to nothing.

I wonder why that is? Is there some big secret to success at FT that no one is sharing?

In fact, if there's one single thing that really separates the pros from the amateurs, it's that the pros always shoot on a tripod (even in daylight). Yes, it's more work, but it's the key ingredient that amateurs miss. Pros will do the little things that most amateurs aren't willing to do; that's part of the reason their photos look like they do.

Exactly. The only guarantee you have of getting "tack sharp" photos is using a good tripod with some sort of cable release or wireless. Even under the best shooting conditions you might shake the camera slightly when taking the photo.

If you are willing to settle for the occasional soft image then dont bother with a tripod, but if you want make every shot count you better haul that sucker everywhere  ;)

Nice work. I hope to hit 2,000 pretty soon, but might not be for awhile.

I make about 3x more at Shutterstock than Fotolia. Sales have always been pretty regular at Fotolia, but never as good as Shutterstock.

Fotolia is also starting to reject a lot more than Shutterstock so that is pretty frustrating.

Sales at SS are interesting too. I really see an increase in sales when im uploading regularly, but its not always new photos that are selling.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Keywords - I feel a rant coming on

All my scout images(all=3 or so) have been accepted after contacting scout.

That is pretty good.

The following keywords used for this file do not appear to be fully relevant to the subject.

{[ Golf Course (Sports Venue)]}

The thing that bugs me too is if you want to send it to support to get reviewed again you have to wait like a month to hear back from them and you can only do that three times a month.

Of all the photos I have sent to be reviewed again they only ever overturned one once.

My friend has a Buick Grand National GnX (the one vin diesel was driving in the recent Fast and Furious movie when they were hijacking the fuel truck) and he wants some model portraits posing with it.  I'm going to have to be careful about not including the entire car in all of the shots.

Sounds like a great gig. Have fun.

Just take your isolated cars and put them in situation like Sharply said before. Still experiencing the best method to do this though

Good idea, love that photo.

I had been thinking of doing something similar, but I liked just selling the straight up isolated versions because they sell pretty well.

That is pretty crazy.

Well it's not. Ford holds the copyright for its design. If you make money out of it (commercial stock), you are infringing upon Ford's copyright. Actually, in the SS post they showed themselves very reasonable: you can still upload if the focus isn't on very specific and unique design elements, like the grill and scoop. The rest is still allowed as editorial.

I was referring to the fact that its just going to get harder to get car photos accepted at SS now too, not that Ford asked them to be more careful about what they accept. I can understand that.

Guess im going to have to fire up 3d Studio Max and start making some cars.

Something interesting happened at SS... See here

 http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=57357

Ford contacted SS about the uses of their trademark (cars) on the site

That is pretty crazy. Looks like no more car photos at SS either. Im guessing its just going to get to the point where it is easier/safer for them just to reject all car photos.

Too bad.

Need proof? Just take a look at the most downloaded images for 'car' on iStock: click here.

Well the sports car are illustrations, with one's own design, which is a very cool way to solve the copyright question. The SUV is an existing brand: the thumb is still there, but the image has been disabled.
There is however this minicooper which even has the brand name in its keywords. I figure this one will be gone soon too.

Ya, that is what gets me. iStock is so crazy about copyright rejects, but just do a search for any given car make and see how many results you get with those names in the keywords.

Mazda = 59 results
Honda = 262
Ford = 870

I guess you cant really blame these sites for trying to protect themselves and the photographers, it just seems like they are also shooting themselves in the foot by limiting what they accept just because it might get them in trouble down the road.

Thanks for the tips. I think they just dont want the car as the main subject. It seems (in my opinion) that cropping would only lower the value of the photo, but I guess if that is the only way to get them accepted that is the only option.

You are dead wrong in your thinking - context is far more important than the crop.

Good point Mr. Done  ;)

I used to think istockphoto's referral program was a joke, only $10 per person, but with only four referrals I have made more than at any other site.

Maybe they have the right idea.
