It's hard to speculate (on how you can just easily double the revenue for exclusives) if you don't know their business figures. Maybe this wouldn't be sustainable, just like old IS canisters weren't.
Do you really think the old IS canisters weren't sustainable?  I never believed that, I am sure that was just used as an excuse for istock to decrease commissions and increase their profits before Getty/istock is sold off.
It probably wasn't sustainable with regards to how much money do they wanna make. Especially with the ever increasing number of images, submitters, submitter canisters, and costs associated with these increases (I don't belive the buyers are increasing as rapidly). But again, this is just a speculation.

-   FT withhold 28% of all commissions from some contributors (even from no US sales). Is this tax transferred or they keep it in this case they are in trouble. Can we check it?
Do you have any ideas?

I think your points are all valid, but I'm especially interested in this one. How come FT is the only one witholding tax on non-us sales?

PS: I think some suggestions might be counter productive. Spreading a bad word might only make the buyers go away. Which will hurt us in the end.

Can someone explain why SS can only take takes from US sales and fotolia takes taxes for all sales (if you didn't supply any forms on both of the sites)?

I use LiveMesh from MS. I didn't like that you can only sync one folder in dropbox (yeah I know I could link the folders, or just put everything in one folder, but I didn't want that). 5 gigs are free. Still in beta though and doesn't have some features of DropBox (like delta sync).

I don't remember the Mac people posting SPAM videos and ads in the Windows 7 thread?
Have a little class guys.

You might wanna recheck that. Search this topic for "apple" and "mac":

Not video though, you got that right.

PS: Here's a vid of iPad, so that I won't be so offtopic:

I'd say SS. Cos you get results very fast and it motivates you further. If my pictures didn't start selling there I probably wouldn't stay in MS business. Other sites just took took too long to get going.

Apple stocks went down after the announcement. Hype can also work against you if you aren't able to supply.

Will be interesting to compare it with
MS Courier
(if it ever comes out)

Admittedly I have not read past the first page at iStock, but I'm confused by this statement. If current canisters are being grandfathered in, how does that translate into a lowering of exclusive commissions. And what do you mean "and now won't move up to 30% (silver)" ... why wouldn't someone move up? (though it will take longer) and how is it a pay cut if they never had it?

Back in my day[/i], we had to have 500 downloads to be exclusive. ;) I was exclusive when they dropped the requirement to 250 and I remember being ticked about that. I wonder what percentage of relative newbies that signed up at 250 are now going to be stuck at bronze for a very very long time. I also wonder how many of that 125,000 monthly new members are becoming contributors.
You were ticked when others got a raise but taking away something that was promised (and written in your agreement) seems just fine? Don't you understand that you had the raise waiting there for you but it has been taken further? You think that changing agreement like that is fine? What if the next thing is to lower the caninsters by a level, would that also be fine?

Let's say we have an exclusive contributer with 2000 downloads right now - lets call him Thor.   Thor is currently a Bronze contributor earning 25% comissions.  Thor won't make it to silver before February when they change the system.  In March Thor reaches 2500 downloads.  With the new system however, he stays at Bronze canister level 25% comission instead of getting silver and 30% comission.  So from march 2010 onwards, iStock is getting 5% more of Thor's earnings than they would have without the change.  that 5% would have been a 20% increase in earnings for Thor (5/20 = 20%).

make sense?  iStock are taking a higher percentage of the sale whenever someone SHOULD have reached the next canister but didn't because of the change.
Yeah, thats the way it is. You can also think about it this way: IS will grab 5% from all the downloads from your current canister level till you reach diamond with the new canister levels. So for a gold exclusive member who won't reach diamond by Feb 24th it means 5% of earnings from 25000 downloads! And for a newbie just starting its 5% out of his 50000 downloads (assuming he will someday reach that many downloads). The numbers are only worse when you consider the numbers like Leaf did.

Getting screwed with the cannisters, just like with fotolia. I see a lot of people getting frustrated on this one. I wonder how the prices are gonna affect the downloads. Maybe non exclusives will get more downloads now that exclusive prices will be higher (problably not, let's see if they'll tweak best match to show a bit more of exclusive files infront).
JJRD confirmed this one.

From a certain point of view exclusivity looks better than ever and from another one it looks like a stupid deal. Let's see these two opposites:
- a pretty high ranked non-exclusive which would get a nice royalty increase (maybe even double earnings just on this one), add increased image prices, vetta collection, visibility in best match,... Sounds tempting.
- a newbie, just starting out. It's almost impossible for him to reach higher level ranks because of upload restrictions, increasing saturation of images, high standards, much higher download limits for canisters,... So a newbie would have to put all his eggs in one basket even though he may be years from reaching a higher royalty. There's almost nothing that would make him go exclusive.

Could all this be istocks plan? Get all the established players and make the newbies pay for them?

Another thing that got me thinking was admins saying "canister change had to be done,...". Is the whole model not sustainable or do they just want more money? I don't see what other reasons could trigger the change? I also don't know which of the two options sounds worse to me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock Photo Paypal Payouts
« on: December 01, 2009, 13:23 »
Just got my payment.

So paypal introduced additional fees. You can see them at your accout page on the right side "Policy updates". The new fee is for receiving the money. I'm almost certain that the agencies won't cover it and it'll come out of our pocket. However they this should only start on Jan 21, 2010.

When I recieved payment from MP I had to pay a fee for recieving money. With other sites there aren't any fees, at least I didn't have to pay any yet. Anyone else with this problem?

« on: November 29, 2009, 05:34 »
I'm bugged by the simple fact that SOOO many of my imags get refused for artifacting!  I look at them at 100%, but darnned if I can see what they are talking about.
Same here, just had 3 from the batch declined for that reason. It's funny to read their instructions about jpeg compression and stuff like that especially if you shoot a studio picture in raw mode, ISO 100, with just tiny ammount of contrast boost and only saving the picture in jpg as the final step. Looks like my camera produces artifacting out of the box  ::)  :D

Appart from that and troublesome upload procedures I quite like IS. Earns a lot of money even with less images online :D

The 5D Mark II is a great camera, but I really feel that the 7D (with the exception of sensor size) is what the 5D Mark II should have been.

I expect even more bad news for contributors(i.e. further cuts in comissions,...) in order to pay for the new guys.

120
So much about exclusive images.

So now people can buy my image that's on StockXpert and I get a decent % or they can buy the same image that is on IS trough photos.com and I get only 20%  ??? ;D Will every image from a non exclusive have duplicates?

Or even 20% off a subscription sale. How much would that be if someone uses all of his downloads that month? 10c?

A few of my files got stuck also. There are files with much higher number getting accepted  (non exclusive files).

Sure but consider this: yuri fires all the people that help him, stops producing new images and alone starts to edit and keyword all those images sitting on his HDD that are probably better than 90% of the images on stock sites but just didn't get chosen because of his dedication to perfection. Who will have the biggest profits then?

PS: Ofc in the long run he would have to start producing new images, but who knows which approach is better in the long run?

You might wanna read this answer from yahoo answers:

RIAA would even want to make ripping a CD illegal (so you could be sued just because you made a digital copy of your cd). I think you are currently allowed to make 1 copy of your cd (not on your hard drive though).

I am not redistributing the song in YouTube, it is even cropped. Can the sound be recorded from YouTube?

Regards,
Adelaide
Yes you can record it. You can easily download youtube videos and/or sound. Ofc you are redistributing it: everyone can hear it. Why do you think radios have to pay some licencing when they play the same songs?

When you buy a cd it usually says that you can't play it publicly. And youtube is about the biggest public out there.
