General - Top Sites / Re: Photos Rejected by SS
« on: May 08, 2022, 11:07 »
most of my photos are shoot outdoor with good lighting, and all the photos accepted by other agency except SS.

SS can be picky about cell phone photos. Shoot raw if you can.

Not sure what the "Premium Pro" membership costs, but I would be inclined to start with the 250 image limit and see the results before going further.

I would guess the results also depend on "where in the world" the person doing the search happens to be located.

I'm confused. I just did a google search "new york photos wall art" and there were no results from pictorem at all?

230
They need to do something to get their lagging downloads up....either that or totally implode and go away.

Thanks all. I have been disappointed with FAA and was wondering if Pictorem performance would be better....sounds like it is worth a try.

232
The only way SS would increase commissions is if its in their business interest to do so. Very few folks left when they cut commissions. As far as theyre concerned, lower commissions doesnt hurt their business.

Agreed. I would like to see them do something to stop their download numbers from slipping....and maybe get them to increase??

Is the Pictorem site (https://www.pictorem.com/) worth looking into. Anyone making money there? How does it compare to FineArtAmerica?

From where I sit, SS is slipping down relative to AS and iS ($$wise and downloadwise), so a change in management sounds like a good idea.

235
These look like they're generated from parts of existing photos. Possible infringement problems? I do agree this eventually will partially, but not totally, replace the need for photographers to produce stock photos. Then these stock companies will just license the AI and create their own images to bypass paying people.

ETA: I watched the full video. How else would it create something with Mona Lisa, Gollum, or Pinkachu without using an existing image of them? They claim to have safeguards from using things such as political figures. What about copyright? They had to have used bits of existing photos for eyeballs, cookies, etc.

Forget the "stock companies", if this works why would anybody need them at all?

Off Topic / How about a Dark Mode option on MSG?
« on: May 02, 2022, 17:26 »
Maybe it's already there, but it would be nice if there was a "dark mode" switch for MSG website....is there one?

While SS is a top earner. From where I sit, they seem to be slipping relative to AS and iS.

Using a Sony mobile my pics nearly all get rejected with Adobe and other agencies. No chance.
So I either have to carry the heavy Sony 7Rii with me all the time or no photos for selling can be taken....

Can your Sony shoot RAW?....it can make a difference vs. phone jpeg

239
Interesting thanks! I have also seen a slow continuing decline of SS in terms of dl's and $$$. They seem to be slipping in $$$ relative to AS and iS.

240
...and how much does Pixta sell? They are way down on the chart on the right. Is it worth the effort?

Never mind....found how to save RAW. I will try thanks!

Just tried it, yes, much more natural looking and flexible results...jpg's have terrible oversharpening. Now I just have to figure out why only two of the three camera/lenses are available in RAW pro mode.

I am using Samsung S21 and soon buying S22, but have also used two iPhone 13 Pro Max friends have for comparison.
In both the iPhone and the Samsung, RAW pics are way better than their Jpeg version.
Personally I find that Samsung has an advantage due to to its highest resolution, being 64 or 50 Megapixels (latest model), despite some suggesting it is interpolated.
I find it better to shoot in full resolution, which is only Jpeg and scale down than shoot RAW with the Samsung at 12 Megapixels.
What always works for me is to denoise with Topaz AI and then scale down to 12 or 8 Megapixels.
In Topaz, you have to play with the various profiles to get the best results.
DxO does not recognise the latest phones, so Deep Denoising does not work and Photoshop does not give a good denoising result.
This gets my daily outdoors pics accepted.
Otherwise, if not using the big resolution, as I already said always shoot RAW in the 12 Megapixels resolution and denoise.
Then inspect the finished pic at 200%, prior to uploading.
The Jpeg usually has much compression, compared to one derived from RAW.

Thanks for the informative response! What app do you use on the Samsung phones to shoot RAW?

I shoot a lot of editorial with an iphone. I don't shoot RAW and take the jpeg straight off camera and upload and most of my pics get approved. The trick is to shoot in broad daylight. If the light is challenging, your smartphone definitely can't handle that.

Yes, I think that was the problem. These shots were in more or less direct sunlight at an event....unavoidable.

Thanks for the report Jo Ann!
Does anybody in the financial industry do competitive analyses of the various stock agencies?

Do folks find that SS "doesn't like" cell phone pics complaining about artifacts and focus? I used a recent high end Samsung and get mostly rejections. I understand that no cell phone can compete with larger sensor "real" cameras, but are other people seeing difficulty with cell phone pics being rejected for technical reasons?

From where I sit, I see income and dl's slowly declining at SS relative to AS and iS.

I closed my Istock account in 2019.

15% to me is an insult.

1000 $ earned: 850 $ to Istock and 150 $ to photographers.

I am a full time stock photographer and prefer more commissioned work (that i don't like) than helping these greed agencies.

And if the few big sales on SS run out, I'll close their account as well.

That's the scary thing about SS....what if the "big sales" do run out. Photog's earnings would really plummet.

Where or how do "connect" sales show up in the spreadsheet?

My graph show decent sales but the exported spreadsheet shows approx one third less in sales - anyone else?

I saw something like that as well. The spreadsheet $$$ were about a 1/3 less than the actual amount. I usually don't check the spreadsheet, I figured I did something wrong in handling it.
