Pond5 / Re: Pond 5 Sales Dropped Off
« on: August 04, 2019, 12:38 »

demand for video is much much much much lower than photo i'd say lower much more than 20 times....12 million are a lot compared to the demand.
[/quote]

It's an interesting analysis:

   - video demand much lower than stills: "20:1"
   - video payout/dl much higher than stills: 50:1? (requires an analysis)
   - effort to produce video vs. effort to produce stills: higher, but how much higher...still need compelling subject matter...that is the toughest part, hard to quantify

Very interesting and useful info!

On your web page you mentioned "video sales on Getty". Do you mean iStock or do you have a separate Getty video account?

POND5 0? Any speculation on the reasons why?

Computer Hardware / Re: 2k or 4k monitor for photo editing?
« on: July 30, 2019, 13:33 »
I'm not sure, but it seems to me that in programs like LR, it will take longer for the image to appear (as it needs to create and show a 4K size preview and what will you gain? You will still have to look at it at 100% to see the focus, and will the normal editing functions look different when you are seeing a higher resolution preview? I think not.

Better to spend your money on accurate color management and a wider gamut perhaps.

Steve

I am not sure Steve, but I think that the standard preview size is 2880 max.

Actually I use a BenQ SW 2700 at home.
It is really an excellent monitor.

I believe this new release is the latest version of the BenQ: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1481844-REG/benq_27_sw270c_professional_ips.html

...Nikon scanners or others with ICE technology were much better.

They are pretty good - not completely cleanup-free, but a huge improvement over manual clean-up.

I have a Nikon SuperCoolscan and am able to use it with MacOS Mojave courtesy of two dongles for the hardware connection (FireWire to Thunderbolt1; Thunderbolt1 to 3) and VueScan for software - Nikon gave up on drivers or software for their devices years ago and thank heavens for Ed Hamrick and VueScan to keep the device operational

Yes, agree about VueScan. I thought it was very unprofessional of Nikon to drop support of their ubiquitous film scanners not too long after they ended the product line.

My list is where I expect it. Are you sure you don't inadvertently have some kind of filter set?

3 months dead for me, I do not know why.
I have many views and few sales.
SS has sold much more video.
It's sad because I had 3 excellent years in POND5.

Did you Know or does anyone Know that SS makes More Money from Newbies that don't have a clue than seasoned Pros. thats why the quality level has gone done and the search is Like it is.. it doesn't matter. Paying 38 cents is Much worse than Paying 25 Cents. Times a Million. A Large Birdie told me.

But if "seasoned pros" generate a lot more sales than newbies, wouldn't that outweigh the payout difference?

I received the 'Shutting down' email today as well. Sad to see the site go down.  I was hoping they would succeed.  I still think blockchain could hold potential in this industry but perhaps we'll have to wait for it to mature another 5 years.

I know very little about blockchain, but in what way do you see it providing a benefit to stock photography/video etc.

Poor month, but even though downloads were down, what really hurt was a lack of "high dollar" sales....mostly all little amounts.

It's not all doom & gloom...

Latest May 2019 Earnings Report:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2019/05/31/may-2019-brutally-honest-earnings-report/

Very nice and informative. May I ask if most of your iStock collection was submitted as a non-exclusive?

I'll just mention, if you look under his messages, there is a row of agencies he submits to. He can't be an iStock exclusive.  :)

You don't see mine, for example, because I don't choose to disclose, but Brasilnut shows his.

But if he was iStock exclusive in the past, the photos submitted as an exclusive would still be selling at a higher price and generate more revenue.

microstock in my opinion apart some rare cases of factory or people who live in third world country or very poor country compared to western hemisphere, is unfortunately not more a job to earn a living. this is the sad truth. when you have to compete with people who live in kiev or belagreade, where a shooting cost a bunch dollar and the living cost are one tenth is not possible to compete. it's like the factory who close the door in western country when china become the production at a level of cost a fraction of theirs. simply not possible to survive now and even less in 2 3 years, time to move to another occupation.

You make excellent points. There are still US based contributors who make  a good living at it. They are exceptional in terms of the quality and quantity of output. However, I do wonder if even some of them wouldn't agree with you if they had to start from scratch in today's environment. One of the toughest things about it is the trend line.  It is hard to be enthusiastic with a continuing downward trend.

I have a user code for the free Offer, but when I go to place my order there doesn't appear to be any box for inserting the code (or for any coupon) - just boxes for credit card details.

Okay, I found that I had to click on the specific link in the email.  Did that, inserted my code, and got the message 'your code has expired'.  Hmmm...

Yet in the email and on Adobe's web site it says the offer code is valid until July 2021.  But in the offer FAQ official rules it says it expires 31/12/2018.

It may be that once  you have the code it will expire July 2021, but the offer to get the code expired on x/x/2018. Yes, doesn't really make sense, but might be the "reason"

I had a video sale on SS a couple of days ago. Royalty.....60 cents. :(

If Pond5 wants to push exclusivity how will this affect Blackbox?

--

Can someone please share a link to a REALLY good lifestyle port that has gone exclusive?
You don't have to if you don't want to, its a metaphorical question.

My point is, I just can't find any really good lifestyle portfolios that have gone exclusive.
Apart from one artist that was mentioned in the Artist Town hall meeting of course.

All I've seen so far are very mundane exclusive portfolios.

I think its the content which is most important, not whether it is exclusive or not.
I'm sure if a client sees an exclusive clip of frog spawn, for instance, they aren't going to be thinking I'm so pleased this clip is exclusive.

What you say makes sense. However, the exclusivity model works (I think) for iStock. The content isn't necessarily better, just exclusive.

Mind sharing your blog? I would be interested in seeing more of your travels.

Blog is at www.MindStormPhoto.com

There is a menu at top also. If you choose "Travel" it expands out to year, and then to trips taken that year.

If you wish to keep current with the blog, the easiest is to:

(1) 'Friend' me on Facebook. The only posts I make on my timeline are to announce when a new blog post is up, or

(2) give me your email and ask to be notified. Once a month (except in rare months with no blog activity) I send out a short email summarizing what blog posts were made in the prior month.

Wow, you have a very interesting story. So is your mirror on the moon something that disproves people claiming the moon landing was a hoax?

469
Explained clearly for anybody who can read, the exclusive was so they could distribute to Adobe, Vimeostock and maybe others without duplication from our own accounts. I went exclusive because of this added exposure.

What pricing do they use on Adobe...etc.?

Don't know if you're trolling but I'll be nice.

It's

salegt:1

NOT salesgt:1, NOT salegt: 1, NOT salesgt: 10000

---

manhattan salegt:1

manhattan salegt:10000

---

Exactly like that. Nothing else will work.

By the way, there are no video clips with sales higher than 420, so you can stop there. ;)

Not trolling....just a silly oversight on my part...thanks!

I question the search results on P5 using those parameters, unless perhaps I am using them incorrectly.

You indeed are. There can't be any spaces between salegt: and the number. It's all one word, very important. Otherwise 100 and 50 are just seen as keywords, which is why you are getting the results you are getting.

To the search engine, a space means "OK, done looking at that thing, let's look at the next", so in your search, the "salegt:" has no effect at all. :)

Still not working for me. I performed the following two searches

manhattan salesgt:1

manhattan salesgt:10000

Both searches returned the same 84262 results...what am I doing wrong?

472
I question the search results on P5 using those parameters, unless perhaps I am using them incorrectly. I combined a few keywords with a parameter as follows:

keyword1 keyword2 keyword3 salegt: 100

I got a number of clips that came up. I repeated the search as follows: keyword1 keyword2 keyword3 salegt: 50

The clips returned by the first query did not appear at all in the second query.

Adobe Stock / Re: What's wrong with adobe may sales ?
« on: May 24, 2019, 07:55 »
Might be because we are approaching Memorial Day in US. I have noticed all sales slower recently.

474
Just 8Gb, minus 2 of them that are shared with the GPU.
I don't want to sound negative, but 8Gb for video ediing is really low.
I have 32Gb on mine and I have been planning for a long time to expand to 64, I will do it as soon as I have the time

How has the amount of CPU memory impacted you? I only do editing of short clips on Resolve, but my machine has 16GB of CPU RAM and it renders at well over real time (HD). I do believe video processor/RAM is very important, but not so sure about CPU memory.

iStock has pretty much always had exclusivity, but it did nothing to prevent the "race to the bottom" in stock photos.
