Shutterstock.com / Re: OFFSET opened doors
« on: September 25, 2013, 19:14 »
The other important question for the contributors is in how many cases Offset actually achieves a sales price that is close to the price listed on the website. As we all know Getty has a huge variance in what customers pay so even with RM files and nominal high prices you might still end up with 5 dollar licenses, although the list price is hundreds of dollars. This is also what makes stocksy so interesting. They are already starting off at the "real" price point many high end customers are used too after their "special" discounts.

they also don't take the discount out of our cut.  :D

Wow. Some people here really seem to think the only thinkable usage of a glamour shot is promoting prostitution. Not much artistic freedom left in a microstock fried market I guess.
lol, another hornymale photographer shooting soft porn glamour and calling it "art". Yep, and you only read the articles in Playboy too.  ::)

FWIW those pics are stunning, in both an artistic and porny way. she's like selena gomez meets kardashian.  I can see why you don't want to take them down.

Reading these threads I find myself wondering what blogs or magazines some people here are actually reading every day or whether they can see what they are looking at.  And what other contemporary media they see everyday. Here, below for example, are 4 lifestyle sites / magazines which all have a deliberately contemporary look and feel.

meanwhile a hip, urban mag I work for,  has recently published not one, but TWO stories where the writer took the photos. ugh. sometimes it's about the $. they now also have guest bloggers... read: young people with dubious skills & an iPhone, who write for free.

I started out very enthusiastic and uploaded to a lot of different sites. Now I am deleting my port everywhere but the top 5. it's just too much hassle for so little return.

ShadySue's comments about chasing up infringements is a good one. at least if you have the image on only one or two sites, you feel more in control.

Yes, I wonder about accuracy, too. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do to check it. There have been times when there has been partial reporting and it is the chorus of the doubters that seems to have led to the figures being re-examined.

which is why these forums are so important

[1] That's the UK use of jumper meaning sweater, not the US meaning of pinafore dress. (apparently)

yes got that, not to be confused with "sloppy joe" which in Australia means "jumper" (meaning sweater, not kangaroo) rather than a hamburger.

but what are cagoules? is this going to be some wet weather item I've never heard of?

edit: ah, a windcheater? yeah, we don't own those!

if you look at summer images (on Stocksy moreso than SS, who still love brights and whites) they often are quite muted. I suppose it's valid, but just like Christmas is considered to be winter and snowy, I consider summer to be bright, sunny and hot. people wearing jeans is NOT summer in my part of the world (tropical Australia), and people wearing jeans on the beach pretty much only happens in family portrait shoots. however, shooting in summer is hard work to get blue skies and nicely exposed skin. (actually I did a shoot in the middle of winter on a farm here and it was still super bright, harsh light and too contrasty.)

edit: i've since moved to a more mediterranean climate and no longer put my jeans away for 4 months. however, my upbringing still knows what "real" summer means., but it's not reflected much as London, Paris and NY seem to rule the world.

depends on where you live, I find my light here to be harsh so I reduce contrast on outdoorsy stuff, esp in summer, but if you're in northern Europe... nice.

are we all have a small smile and how natural lighting is "the latest thing". I agree that both SS and iS seem to be softening up a little.

I've only had a cursory look, but isn't OFFSET the same type of thing?

you are correct with the softer look, in fact they prefer blacks softer, natural skin tones and soft light. To me a lot of it looks like it's shot in Canada during winter as the light is muted, lucky buggars. Not all of it (I've seen some stuff there that is contrasty, HDRish, oversaturated and sharp), but certainly the curated stuff.

I'm not so sure about less post processing through, but I don't use Lr so I don't have the VSCO plug in that many seem to have. I think your "instagram" comment is valid and why not? it's on trend right now, and may well go on for a decade.

Jens I looked at your 10, I wouldn't submit those. Especially the swan with the tilted horizon - they don't like tilts, I've learnt that much!  I can't speak for the butterfly as I don't shoot insects, macro or any nature that requires me to be patient :)
i'm still on a learning curve as to what they do and don't like, but I don't think the compositions or processing will wow them.

I want one. Normally I don't want the latest gadgets, but I saw this and thought it would very handy for beach pics, both in and out of the water. i hate taking my good camera to the beach.

This thread reads like it's from a dating site where folk are asking how to most easily ditch the latest irksome date they've just met. That's not professional and it's not good business.

does it? even though i'm not the type to go on a dating site (been married 13 years now FYI) and don't consider myself frivolous. I tried out a few other sites when I first started, when I was enthusiastic and positive (ha! before coming here). Now i'm "wiser" I am able to make decisions based on my experiences, I've made a business decision to stop wasting my time on these low performing sites.

I didn't realise professional meant you can't try, fail or learn (someone should send Richard Branson a memo). I will certainly have setbacks and failures again in the future. I'm ok with that.

265
how can everything be covered? 2 years ago no one was talking photos of kids doing selfies, quinoa fritters, or hipsters with film cameras.......

fashion changes, technology changes faster, those 2 alone mean we get to keep shooting new stuff.

I like the bending of the rules at Stocksy. How many times have you groaned at the "poor composition/poor lighting" rejection and thought it was rubbish? I like that the food shots cover such a wide spectrum (although there's nothing on pure white you'll notice), and are in general, amazing.

yes, there is a whole world of crazy stuff there too, stuff I don't get at all, and stuff I am inspired and amazed by. that's life.

If you need a litmus look at "apple" and see the difference in results from iS to Stocksy, esp the exclusive content.  That should give you an idea into the style difference.

last year my top 3 months were December, November and July.
this year, so far, July is BMY, I'm not holding out much hope for September. I don't have thanksgiving, back to school, halloween or other US type imagery though, so that may be why I don't have big septembers.

thanks Tyler. We should also add in who pays out the balance, and how painful that is.

crestock were good and have offered me my princely payout of $8.xx
custcaster made no mention of it, very terse "it's done" email.

On ShutterStock you can also do it from the Catalog Manager
Just double click the file to edit or delete.

Steve

yes, they are pretty good (no surprises there, right?). I'm not taking much off SS though. I'm finding it easier to just delete my whole port on other sites, rather than muck around copying and pasting image numbers in an email, and then having to check that it's actually been done.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model release or property release?
« on: September 16, 2013, 08:30 »
i suppose in theory it should make sense that you can release an image of yourself and sign it now, as an adult?  technically your mum owns copyright but then you can have a private agreement between you to transfer that ("mum, can I sell that pic you took of me as a baby?"  ... "of course darling, but who would ever buy it?")

Crestock

again, there's no easy way, you have to email support with file id#.

So again, i just requested to close the entire account, seemed easier than wading through my port to cherry pick out a dozen images.

These smaller players are so silly, making life harder for us for such little return makes us turn our backs on them completely. at least at iS, DT, SS and 123 I can easily delete a single file. (i'm using the word "easily" very loosely as you do have to do searches, but once you're in the groove it's about 30 seconds per image)

yes, it's interesting how difficult it is to disable files or remove the portfolio, zero info on this!

Bigstock: you have you go through and save the file # and then email them a list to be disabled.

how ridiculous and time consuming for us both! i'm $2 off my $30 payout so i thought I wait to get it rather than let them have it. so i am disabling about a dozen files. what a giant PITA
