It's the same as it was in 2006, when they said this "wave" was soon to crash and the sky was falling... similar to what was said in 2008, and 2010, and 2012, etc, etc...

What's the latest doom and gloom?

Here's what I have noticed.  RPI has dropped incredibly.  That's a given, and it will continue to fall like a stone as the number of images in the photo pile continue to increase, as your production rate does not.  Is it all doom and gloom?  I don't know, as me again in a few more years.  I'm still not down to eating ramen noodle soup and cans of tuna fish for dinner just yet.

Keep making images, keep making money, branch out into things you've never tried before like stock footage (your camera probably does that now), constantly test the waters with new agencies to spread your work out and sell more places (yeah i know, it's a pain but you have to unless you want to be a lazy schlub and go exlusive with big G)

onward and upward.

Not the end of the world.  You add it in the same area of the tax software as your W2's... why the huge annoyance? Does your accountant charge you more or something?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock IPO Pricing Revealed
« on: February 03, 2014, 22:06 »
Just to update this old thread, the SSTK stock has performed exceptionally well. I am kicking myself for not buying in on the IPO, I would have more than tripled my money.

The last week has been pretty volatile for the entire market, and SSTK has dipped down as well.  Keep an eye on the prices for a good buying opportunity... at it's peak SSTK spiked up to $89/share.

http://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=sstk

The volume isn't amazing on the stock, but it definitely moves nicely as a swing trade or long term trade.  And why not invest in something you know and understand?  We all know that Shutterstock is the king of the stock imagery subscription plan.

I'm more of a daytrader, though... especially in a market like this.  Take your gains and run.  Cut your losses short.  Things are choppy, and I'm not having too much fun with the biotech stocks I'm holding as swing trades gone wrong lol.

Another vote for NEVER

One man's junk is another man's treasure.  Sometimes your largest duds become your biggest exclusive buyouts on sites like DT, or EL sales elsewhere.

Don't over analyze it, just keep making images and move forward, don't look back.  Paralysis of analysis.

December by far.  January was up 40% for me compared to last month.  Worst December EVER.  Maybe I need to kick my production game up a notch.  Either way, those types of months are healthy once in a while because the motivate the crap out of you to stop being such a lazy schlub

General Stock Discussion / Re: Rejections at SS
« on: February 03, 2014, 21:14 »
Mix up subjects in your batches, don't make your batches too large, and instead submit regularly with momentum.  Otherwise if you want to upload 200 in a clip and think the poor soul who has to dig through all that isn't going to be totally scintillated by your creativity, then think again.  There are real live people approving these images, and they're human.  Lauren knows what it's like to be on the other side of things, and so do I.

It's not even that strategic to upload in large lumps if you want to get the most exposure for your images... think about it.  New stuff gets shown first in search results.  What's better? 50 images of pretty people pics to the top of the pile once a week, or 10 new approved images to the top of the pile each day?

Take everything with a grain of salt.  IF you have a specific feeling that a certain image shouldn't have been rejected, fix what you can, resubmit it possibly even with a note, and try again... if it's worth your time.  If not, then more on.  This is all part of the game of stock imagery.  Hope some of this is insightful.  Sometimes even I don't follow my own advice :) Especially about the momentum part.  I prefer to store my pretty images on my hard drive and procrastinate submitting them, because after 8 years doing this full time I'm getting bored out of my mind with it all.  Either way, a job is a job... work is work, and I'm very thankful.

And to let you guys know, rejections never stop *.  They never get easier to bear either.  With persistence, trial and error; you'll learn how to avoid the stupid types.

Thanks again to Mr. Wolfram - we very much appreciate your kind gesture. Also thank you Tyler for helping out with this, much appreciated as well.

Hey Sean - you'll be back on your feet in no time.  Work hard, remember to stay balanced with your family life as well.  It's easy to think you have to work 80+ hours a week, but that's not going to be any good.  Pace yourself.  I've been through this with loss of a job in 2008, and hustling to get things moving.  Learned the hard way, and got back on track with keeping work in its place.

Talk to the right people at whichever new agencies you choose, and try to make special arrangements if you can.  They will jump through a few hoops, perhaps assisting you with uploads, pushing images live, in order to help out a contributor with a portfolio of images as strong as yours is.  Don't tell me there isn't favoritism in this business.  I've seen it firsthand.  Most intelligently-run agencies will reach out to help you if they realize they're going to help themselves in turn.  And don't forget what you bring to the table.

You'll do fine, and a year or two later you'll look back and realize that it was a blessing in disguise.  Best wishes, man.

Very true... it's tough sometimes to separate yourself and your eyeballs from your "stock photo money goggles".  I struggle with this myself.  Felt that way, blogged about it, slowly starting to get a little better with it, only 8 years later.

Wow, thank you so much, anonymous donor.  I never win anything... this prize will at least give me a little something back as I continue to use my own time deactivating more photos.

How about this?  I'd like to pay half of it ($50) forward.  I can't hog all of it to myself.  Let's say 2nd place get's $30, and 3rd place gets $20.

Tyler - please go ahead and randomly generate some numbers from the tally thread, and post the results here.  Let's make a few more hard working microstockers have a slightly better day as well.

Over 31% of my port has just been deactivated, I needed a pick-me-up today, besides my coffee ;)

You guys can update me in the spreadsheet to say 408 total images removed.  I might yank another 200 by the end of the week; it depends what mood I'm in.

Glad it was just a false alarm.  I can see why you got excited, though.  Opting out of partner programs is a personal decision.  If somehow your portfolio leaked through the cracks, I would be pissed as well.

Wow, what a lot of work to create an entire website just to snag a few referral sales.  Smart people.  I hope all of the effort was worth it for them.  I wish I could find some motivated and willing people to do something like this with my direct sales website & affiliate program, because every link helps in this business.

I deleted 195 more yesterday for a running total of 200, as I pledged earlier on the spreadsheet.  I'll keep removing more at leisure, whenever the mood strikes me.

What a depressing theme - once companies become successful and dominant they ignore, or abuse, the people who create the content that made them big and successful.

I honestly don't really see what the big outrage is here. You could sort your search results by size before. This change really isn't all that different. Google isn't the one that is putting these large resolution files out there. Will there be abuses? Yes, of course. Does Google drive sales and bring paying customers in as well? Yes, they do.

I'm of the opinion that the positives outweigh the negatives here. And, the negatives are things that Google can't fix like sites posting images at resolutions they aren't supposed to or people stealing files from sites. Those two things will probably exist as long as the internet does.

Exactly.  You have to expect this sort of thing, it's a control issue.  If you want full 100% control, you are probably in the wrong sector of the business.  You'd be better off selling only rights managed and treat every image your product like one of your children.  No it's not pleasing when people use purchased images in a way that goes against the terms of use, but it's not within anyone's control to be able to police 100% of the violations.

I have a question.  If you're independent, can IS still include your photos in the Google Giveaway?  And if they do and you have those files at another agency, wouldn't agency #2 have a huge problem with that?

Apparently some independent contributors files are included in the Google deal but being independent means that other agencies don't get to have a problem with what you do elsewhere.

Yes, I'm the one with 2 images on GD and I'm independent. So, no protection for both!

Same here.  I found 2 of mine already on google drive.  I guess that makes us "one of under 100 artists" according to istock's thread.  Wow, I feel so special.  Out of my 1300+ images on there, they chose one of my top selling images, of course.  You guys can read more of my rant and feelings in my most recent blog post http://arenacreative.com/blog/photography/microstock-related/microstock-deactivation-day-planned-for-feb-2/

My tally so far:  5 images

Many more to be deactivated.  Someone can add me to the tally spreadsheet if they want, for at least 200 images.  It will probably be many more than that, but I will update the final tally here later.
