Step 1... get yourself a time machine
Step 2... go back to the year 2000 to start shooting editing keywording and preparing for the era of microstock
Step 3... in 2006, start uploading.  pay no attention to the annoying reviewers who are also at the same time, your competitors ;P
Step 4... argue about your RAW workflow at parties in London with Yuri, Andres, and Jon Oringer while sipping on Martinis and talking about how annoying rejected photos and keywording are to your life

Good news for me, my taxes are already at the accountant and I dropped 123RF years ago.  ::)

Good for you!  Gotta love the art of procrastination... apparently I never learn my lesson LOL

Looks like this will be a repeat of last year... down to the final hours to get the stupid 1099.

On a side note, I haven't received my January earnings yet, and now we are in March.  More "writing on the wall"?  And don't even get me started about Crestock not paying out for over 6 months.

Anyone else in payment limbo with these guys?  It's been 6 months and counting for me.  After I get my final payment I'm out of there.

This is sad news, but very telling at this point in the microstock industry.  The smaller companies dissolve, or get merged into bigger ones.  I haven't uploaded any new stock imagery to the photobanks in at least 3 years now.  My biggest 3 payouts each month are Shutterstock, Adobe, and DepositPhotos... with Dreamstime and 123RF tied for 4th place.  The rest are almost not even worth bothering to check the royalties, no more than quarterly.

At one point I had earned over $5000 / year with Photospin.  This year, the payments have been sporadic at best. Sad to see anyone have to close their doors due to financial difficulty, but it's also sad to get jipped out of our meager royalties without any kind of final payout announcement.  The revenue share is such a small portion of their cashflow.  I've never had anything negative to say about my dealings with Val, as he seemed like a stand-up guy.  I will be emailing him to see if there is any way for me to get the small remainder of my earnings.  It's the principle, not the amount that is most important.

When the amount of content outweighs the amount you can produce on a regular basis, you will hit a wall. The crowd-sourced business model only benefits the company, not the individual.  It's fun while it lasts, for the individual... but don't bet on retiring from it that way.

I still have not received anything from them. Their contributor support was offline since last Thursday and their regular support refused to help me and said to email them, which I've previously done, but never gotten a response from. I got connected to contributor support today and they gave me this response "1099 and 1042 will be released by end of this week. Apologies for the delay and kindly not that 123RF has applied for an extension with the IRS."

This is absolutely absurd. I don't think anyone there understands anything about US taxes, and I tried to impress on them that for individuals they are due tomorrow at the latest. They said they'd get back to me, but that's extremely unlikely. I know what my royalties were, but based on past years, they have no idea. So, I guess I'll wait until tomorrow. Regardless of what happens, I am permanently removing all of my work from their site. This level of incompetence doesn't deserve any of my business, not to mention that my sales on there have collapsed over the past year.

Just log into your back end on 123rf.  Then go here: https://www.123rf.com/tax/
Your 1099 should be in there, as ours were.  Yeah, really nice that we didn't even get any sort of notification.  Thankfully we are all paranoid and checked it regularly enough.

Best wishes, Martian!

I'm VERY happy about this.  But I hope the same thing doesn't happen like last year... that they issue a revised / corrected 1098 after we have all already filed.  I'm still waiting for that to come back to one of us.

Some places report cash method vs accrual, so it depends if they're reporting the year they sent the payment vs the year that you earned it.  Usually if I see discrepancies between my numbers and theirs, it's due to that.

This is really ridiculous regarding 123rf not even being able to provide our 1099s within a reasonable amount of time.  Even getting them in February or March is considered very late.  I'm being held up in a lot of ways by this.  We don't all have the simplest tax returns to file.  I even have to deduct my duplicate 1099-MISC income from the figure that PayPal sends via the 1099-K, otherwise I get double taxed.  You just make a line item for it on Schedule C.  Leaving the 1099-K off of my return got me a soft-audit a couple years in a row, back in 2012 and 2013.  Sending paypal statements and info to prove the income was double reported was like another 15-20 hours worth of work. Huge mistake there, on my part... but at least now I know how to avoid that.  But I still want to accurately report the same numbers that they are going to report.

I really hope 123rf sticks to their word, and put them out online by the end of this week.  We have to file by MONDAY!!  I just emailed them as well; we all should email them so that this actually gets done.

Here's my two cents, take it or leave it.  I'm not trying to discourage you, but it's my dead honest opinion after being in this industry for over 10 years on all ends of the spectrum.

The website looks really rough at first glance.  It's going to need a lot of development.  What good is a 75% payout to a contributor, if you have zero traffic; no content... dude you really can't put the cart before the horse.  Many of us here have even had our own agency websites, and shut them down because the costs outweighed the income.

You will have to also compete with places like StockPhotoSecrets that offer over 5 million images for a $99 yearly subscription, and 200 total downloads.  No, they don't sell single images... because dealing with customer service issues from numbskulls who don't know their mouse from their elbow isn't worth it, when you're making $1.25 gross per image.

Sell used DVD's on ebay.  That's even a better business model, than this.

So I moaned to istock support today about STILL not getting paid since August... and they sent me this email within 6 hours.  Coincidence?  I think not.  That means they are going to drag their feet until June of 2018 to pay us what we are owed.

« on: August 03, 2017, 08:51 »
I have just requested through StockXpert as if the site was still alive and i end up getting payment after a few weeks.

So basically this proves that they are lying to me.

"Unfortunately, we are still experiencing a delay in StockXpert Payments. We are gradually starting to process payments, however, so we hope to have your pending amount of ------ issued shortly.

Your previous delayed payment of ------ was issued through PayPal on July 20th.

Thank you for your patience."

Patience... I've been MORE than patient.  They only got 5 inquiry emails from me in the past 5 months, with which I've had to wait many days for a generic response such as the above.   I just don't get it.

I've been trying to get my payout from stockxpert for months now... since March, actually.  I've sent multiple emails to support, and all I get is the runaround.  Super unprofessional, from a company as large as Getty.  I never had any issues with them in the past, and now when royalties are at an all time low, they decide to start acting up.

Guys I don't talk here much, but I've earned a full time income on microstock in the US since 2008.  It's very sad for me, but to be totally honest; I'm now viewing microstock royalties and their dwindling returns as a sort of "unemployment" compensation.  It's going to continue, but will also continue shrinking.  There are so many other ways I can use my time during the week to generate income, that I really can't see pissing in the wind or chasing this runaway train any longer.  I believe that the wave has finally crashed for individual contributors who are looking for a full time income from this, regardless of your content or your skill level.  If you want to make enough to pay your cell phone and grocery bill, and don't mind countless hours of work for less than minimum wage; then go for it.

I had a 1 hour on discussion on the phone a few weeks ago with the contributor relations head of a major agency in the big 4, and explained my feelings.  YES, there are still niches in the image banks that need to be filled with a lot of earning potentional, but to me, earnings also are not guaranteed to be enough to justify their costs (in both production, orchestration, and planning time).

Like many others here in this thread, I too have never seen a tank in sales on Shutterstock any larger than 2016-2017.  I barely produced anything from 2012-2015 and still was able to generally maintain my royalty levels.  If Shutterstock is trying to punish those who don't frequently upload.

I have thousands of images left on my backlog that I might eventually submit, but only when I am extremely bored or feel like experimenting.  I heard that review times are crazy fast and extremely easy to pass, lately.  They must have beefed up their reviewer team.

Me too... that would be nice; but it raises the question, are we just seeing bad stats this month?  Or is it a disgruntled employee who is exiting with a really expensive joke on the company?  LOL I wouldn't get our hopes up.

This month's earnings were the worse I've had with Shutterstock since I started dedicating 40 hours a week to microstock production back in May of 2008.  I'm definitely done chasing this runaway train.  The thirsty artists can go nuts and keep producing... I just don't see the point anymore.  There are so many other better ways of making a living than working for below minimum wage.

I just logged in using my full email and istock password, thanks to an MSG user who put that info on here in another thread.  All I wanted to do was check my January earnings, but apparently even those aren't showing up just yet in the ESP area.

I'm not even going to waste more than 15 seconds reading this crap; because I could care less about stuff we cannot control... but basically this structure reminds me a lot of how Photospin does things.

43
Have any US-based contributors realized that 123rf has withheld money from us starting in the latter part of 2015, up until the point that we provided our tax information to them?  I'm talking hundreds of dollars.  Elaine with support is basically telling me that the withheld funds have been given to the IRS, and that I need to contract a tax advisor in order to get the withheld monies back.

No, I never received an email from 123rf saying I needed to provide tax info, back in 2015... or whenever they decided to switch their company from one country to another.

I don't have time to deal with this crap right now...

Image Sleuth / Re: The worst site I've seen in a long time

It also links to images here on this pixabay free photos site. Looks to me just like another crap terd pile of garbage freebies.  There will be a few good images mixed in with a pile of garbage.  I used to scour through websites like these back in the day, when I worked for a company that was too cheap to get me a stock photo buyer's account.

Maybe this site is just an affiliate link grab/type setup.  They send traffic, and refer sales for profits, and they have a few ads to generate some adsense revenues.  Who knows; they probably won't last too long.  These types of websites come and go.  They never last too long.

45
I don't have that problem... because I honestly don't want to be bothered with design work.  I price is high, and long, and hope they go away.  Then sometimes they still want to go forward, so I just buck up and do it.  If something isn't as enjoyable or convenient, or I'm just not in the mood, I quote high.  There are many ways to skin a cat.

46
US citizen here as well.  It doesn't appear they're withholding anything from me.

I got a response about the 1099 already, that was fast.  They said it wouldn't be issued, but next year it will be.  Now at least I know just to report the income under gross receipts.

Mike - maybe they're reporting cash vs accrual?  Some companies report differently than others.  Money out by the month send, vs money owed and sent later (december earnings, sent in january for example)

47
Who have you guys found to approve the most cell phone pics, the easiest?

Fotolia for me seems to be easiest to take the few I've submitted.  Keywording on the fly on a mobile is a pain, though.  I can't see this being time effective, or cost effective... but it's fun if you're bored.   Not sure I've ever sold any of my mobile uploads yet.  I remember Shutterstock seeming a bit tougher to get approvals on them.

48
I got a 1042 as well. No 1099.

Someone must have got the 2 mixed up and send wrong documents to everyone.

I also only got the 1042, tho I have lived in the US for years and they have my address.  I wrote support and they said I didn't fill out a w9 for 2015.  I guess I  didn't,  but I filled one out a couple years ago and it should still be on file.  All the other sites only make you fill it out once unless something changes.  SS, DT, FT, etc are still using ones I filled out a couple of years back.  Besides, once I told 123 about the problem, they should have sent the right form.  What good is a 1042 to me living in US?

same here... I emailed them.  Waiting to hear a response.  I have a few weeks to file my taxes and now get to deal with this fun, yayy!  my own fault for procrastinating.

Angela, you're very talented... more than you probably feel.  You need to grow some confidence in yourself, after (how many years have you been doing this stuff now?).  Remember that.  It's not like you just bought your first computer or camera and are figuring this crap out as you go along.

I would recommend that you start charging hourly for your design work.  Give an initial estimate, but let the clients know they will have to pay you hourly.  Flat rate pricing only works if you're charging A LOT and getting it.  Otherwise you'll get dragged into proofing hell/limbo back and forth just because most people like to change things just for the sake of changing them, JUST because they CAN.  Proofing revisions can turn nightmarish.  Or you can give them an option of up to 1 or 2 revisions and then after that, charge additional hourly.  I've been burned oooooh so many times by quoting a flat rate on design work, only to find out that either I underestimated the length of the job, or because the client was a psycho.

Worried about your clients being offended?  No worries... there are plenty around, and they will pay you what you want if you have the quality to back it up.  Sometimes people will pay more than average for something just because they think it must be more valuable.  There is a ton of psychology behind consumerism.  It's still an incredible value for them if you chose to charge $100 for a half hour shoot or $150-200 for an hour, with 10-20 images delivered.  Try it out, and see how it goes.  When you get so busy that you're turning away clients, jack up the prices.  You'll give yourself a raise, and you'll be able to make the same, but work less.  Enjoy your family time more!

50
Maybe charge at least $150/hr and give them 10-15 final images per each hour you shoot (unless you like working for less money than someone at a fast food restaurant).  You can slightly discount the rate if they don't mind signing a model release.  Sometimes I don't even think $150 is enough when you add up all of your time spent before after the capture.
