Off Topic / Re: Domain Names. What's yours and why?
« on: October 30, 2007, 07:37 »
I have 5 domain names but the most important one for me is the one that links them all together. I also needed something bilingual since I have lots of french clients. So... www.Image-Y.com since my name is Yanik. I also have yanikchauvin.com as this was super important to get since it's my name. One day I'll be famous and I wouldn't want anyone to grab it and try to resell it to be to make a quick $.  ;) I use it as my main portfolio site.

IS  sales keep increasing for me. My sales from sep to oct will increase roughly 20%. IS revenue are now more than double SS revenue. If it keeps going this way, I might become exclusive by the end of 2008.

Lighting / Re: Cheap lighting sistem? $900-1000
« on: October 24, 2007, 17:15 »
I have lots of Amvoa stuff that I got off Ebay for VERY cheap: reflectors, tripods, heads, muslins, softboxes.... I've had some of the stuff for over 3 years and they still work great. They're NOT top quality but they get the job done.

When I saw their flashes on Ebay I decided to give them a try. I got http://www.amvona.com/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=3189 for onyl $305! That covers the cost of the softbox and umbrella. :-)

Verdict: For the price I paid I got a really sweet deal! The tripods are solid but the springs feel loose. The 300W strobes work fine and recharge faster than I would of thought. 300W is more than enough power for studio work. I also have three 400W Aurora Genesis strobes (which cost $650 each) and I rarely go over 1/2 power. The softbox in the kit is well made like the other 3 softboxes that I already have from them (I got a lovely 5ft hexagonal for $65!).  The case is solid, on the heavy side but with wheels, and well padded. It also comes with a wireless remote which I haven't tested because I already have mine. I have to say that I've only had the strobes for a few weeks now and I don't know how long they'll last but for that price who cares. I see it as having bought a nice cary case , a softbox and an umbrella and the strobes were free.   ;D

Software - General / Re: Are u using Lightroom?
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:35 »
Lightroom has sped things up for me soooooo much! I rarely go in CS3  anymore unless I have some major isolated tweaking to do. And to workflow between CS3 and LR is seemless.

As for exif data.... you have the option to have a .xml sidecar file to be created if you want.

More importantly, LR is a database so finding files is sooooo easy (if you keyword them properly ;-)).

« on: October 12, 2007, 09:26 »
WOW! It's interesting to see that'll be in the top 160 of contributors! I was sure there were much more Diamond members than that! Which means that very few are making a full-time income from just Istock.

Just as an FYI (sorry if this has been mentioned before)... #4 on that list has just quit his day job and is doing photography full time
http://www.istockphoto.com/sjlocke

he was an artist for Disney animation at one time - pretty talented guy.

That's soooooooooooooo cool! I quit my job last year (14 months now) and only do photography. 70% of my income comes from stock. Life is beautiful  ;D

Yanik, is that image of the woman meditating at the lake the one you won with on DPChallenge?  Awesome image!!!!

It sure is (but flipped). Funny, back then I never though that image would be making me some good $$.  :D

One of our members - kosmikkreeper - will be on the diamond list any day now. Check him out: http://www.istockphoto.com/yanc

Hey! That's me!!  ;D

Which means that very few are making a full-time income from just Istock. MOnth by month my sales are increasing at Istock and decreasing at SS. Who knows, maybe one day it'll be financially viable to be exclusive... black diamond maybe   ::) ;)

I have a similar problem with PS and LR with RAW files only. They all have a yellow tint and less red. I created a preset in LR to compensate even though it's not 100% accurate. The joys of RAW....  ;)

Off Topic / Re: Alamy Online Uploads
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:57 »
this a little off the topic but I'd like to know if you upload same files that you also upload to micros,is it allowed and how good idea is it?

A very bad idea in my view. If a customer buys an image for a high price at Alamy, only to discover later that it's available for a dollar or two at a micro, he will probably not be happy. I wouldn't have been, and I wouldn't even consider buying from your portfolio at Alamy again.

I agree with that but there is one thing though. by uploading same files  to a macro site you offer your files as RM not only RF (which is mostly not available on micro sites)so that should mean you are giving a different buying option to the buyers.and to my point of view this  should be the main point of considering such a thing.

You can't submit an RF image that's on a micro and put it as RM on Alamy or anywhere else. The image is either RF or RM.

« on: July 25, 2007, 09:45 »
with a fairly good portfolio on 8 micros, I have to say that 123RF income is higher than BS by almost double and this month it'll beat SX. I would bump BS down.   ;)

Bigstock.com / Re: Big vs 123RF
« on: July 24, 2007, 07:56 »
Well, with over 1600 photos on both I can tell you that for a while both BS and 123RF were head to head. But for the last 3 months or so 123RF has blown BS out of the water! I now make double the income on 123RF than on BS.  ::)   :o

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia V.2
« on: July 15, 2007, 07:32 »
Since V2 I can't upload via FTP so I'm using their Flash uploader.

Another crappy thing is that you can't modify keywords on accepted images. That sucks big time.  >:(

If you start uploading and come back later you are logged out and you have to start uploading again, because only if you finish the submission at that time will then system remember/retain your pics. Very frustrating. Uggghhhh.

Well... I've tried uploading pics twice now without sucess. The second time I only tried 3 pics and after 30 mins of "uploading..." I logged out. There doesn't even seem to be a place to see what pics were uploaded.... and without IPTC data and their bad keywording... I'm gonna wait. Beta... right....
