Crestock.com / Re: sales getting better?
« on: October 26, 2008, 09:43 »
I started uploading there due to Yuri's high praise.... I can unfortunately say that sales are very weak so I stopped uploading there in August. I'll start uploading there again IF things pick up and they change their subs commissions.

Hi Penny

For museums, you can shoot them outside no problems. But to shoot them inside, ask since the rules vary.

Ya, piss rain for the next few days so no walking in the Gatineaus.  >:(

Ther's some gret indooe architecture at Ottawa U though.  :)

ya, I'm getting more and more images rejected on account of "irrelevant" keywords. And I do take care now to trim it down to the basics.

I think it's another tactic to discourage independents. ;)

LR 2 is more than just an editing platform. As a stock photog, my workflow time has been reduced by about 30%. Just copying keywords is a big time saver not to mention copying post processing adjustments in one click.

I now have more time to drink beer, update my blog, feed the birds.... or not. ;)

What I find even more interesting is that he's actually going to be making more at fotolia than at istock now. One would have to wonder if some of the top exclusives decided to submit to other agencies, how much would their income rise?

That's not hard actually. A few months back I turned Emerald at FT and upped my images to $2. I now make roughly 40% more at FT than at IS!

Yuri is more than a excellent photographer. He's a businessman and a great one at that! He built his company from the ground up. He's probably the only one that had this vision and the guts to pull it off in the micros.

As an ex-company owner (roughly 12 employees under my care) I'm looking forward to meeting him one day and giving him a good old fashion HIGH-5! :)

Have you guys pondered the amount of residual income this guy's gonna make if he calls it quits?  8)

If I were 25 again, I'd be following in his footsteps for sure!

Keep it yup Yuri! You rock man!  ;D

PS: As for Istock... the admins must love him.... he's their top money making machine!  ;)

Hi Guys

Here's my latest video tutorial using Photoshop Lightroom. In this video I'll show you how to create the trendy orange sky image we see a lot of lately.

Check it out!

I hope you enjoy it.

If you're only shooting stock, you really don't need a backup unless you get a small P&S like Miklav said.

Well, my stock income will be up 15% this month on record sales which is something I've never seen in at least 2 years when my port was smaller. So keep em coming!

And my stock (market) portfolio is down another 12% just today.  Am I worried? nah. So what if we're in a depression for a few years. I know how to make a garden and my neighbor has lots of pigs and I just happen to like bacon and ham. ;) So I'm all set.

I quit my day job while I was only making half my income from stock. I had been doing stock part time for 3 years. Within a year I had my day job income. And now... I have more.  ;D

General - Top Sites / Re: Yuri Arcurs earns more at Fotolia then IS
« on: September 19, 2008, 17:57 »
I just had my imagse on Fotolia at $2 a few months back and this month will be close to a tie in terms of revenue with IS. So I can imagine that at $3 or $4 it wouldn't be hard to beat out IS.  :) I love Fotolia.... now another year or so for the next level!   8)

The next thing I do is research. I usually go to Shutterstock and IstockPhoto (because of exclusive content) and type in keywords related to my theme. I already have a folder on my desktop called Stock Ideas and in the folder I have many theme-related sub folders. I go through the agencies images and download comps of concepts and ideas that I like. Depending on the theme, it could be from 20 to 100ish images.

Hmmmmmm.....

ok, ok before I get mobbed, I clarified my post.  ;)

Bonjour tous,

I just had my first couple of photos.com sales.  Hope to see a lot more!
Just curious on how much did you get... Do it was subscription or PPD?

Yes, unfortunately just subs so far at photos.com.  I've made a grand total of .60 ;)

Definitely going to need to see good volume to make it worthwhile...

Hey Lisa we're neck and neck on Photos.com earnings! ;)

Well, on the bright side, about 75% of my income is from microstock. The rest are photography contracts. I was a school director and when they closed the school and offered me a job in another school I refused. It was scary but I took the leap of faith. Faith in my skills and the future of microstock. At that time I was earing roughly $2000/month from stock so I had to work hard and build up my portfolio with quality images.

It took me 1 year and now I make as much now as a school director. The rest of my contracts are bonuses. I wouldn't change my job for anything. Yes, roughly 15% of my job is shooting. The rest is post processing, keywording, uploading, yadda yadda yadda. That's the job of a stock photographer. I now have enough images that I can take a few months off and barely see an impact in sales (even in summer).

And the stress? What stress? I now work from home in my PJs (aka work clothes). I only work 10-15 hours a week on average on microstock now to maintain my current income. I don't need to increase my microstock revenue for now. I don't want to be the next Yuri and manage a whole staff. Not anymore. Been there, done that. Microstock allowed me to buy a house deep in the country cuz I don't need to commute anymore (the only way to get high speed is by satellite!). My property is on a small river that leads to a lake and when I take some breaks (which is often!) I either rest in my hammock or jump in my canoe with my 80-400mm to shoot herons and loons.  The best part is that my mortgage pmts are less than what I was paying in town of a small apartment. Now I have a basement with a permanent studio to boot! :)

I thank Mr. Microstock every day for giving the this wonderful lifestyle. I feel semi-retired! So much so that I needed to occupy more of my time (the workaholic in me ;)) so I started Yanik's Photo School. I'm now giving back to the photo community because I'm so grateful.

Who knows what the future holds. None of us do so why worry about it. ;)

People who worry about what could happen never make it happen! You just need to be smart and stay in touch with what's going on (liek coming here everyday). That's also part of a microstocker's job.

Hope this helps. We dream for a reason!

I made this business decision in May. I have stopped contributing to Crestock, Canstock and Featupics. I'm keeping my account open there though as I still get sales and small payouts.

I now only contribute to the top 7.

Thx for sharing Chumley

I make a visual shot list. Basically, pages with 28 thumbs on them. I then add a few notes if need be. It worked great for me!
