what a cruel experiment to prove what ?
Monkeys prefer grapes to cucumbers.
If humans are going to keep caged animals and do experiments on them, they should atleast be useful ones that have some benefit.
Reminds me of the proposed munrow box experiment on the Simpsons, except thats a cartoon.

I have PP for all of October. No sales data from 25th through to now. PP was well above average. 2x my IS sales.

alot of the top end contributors, seem to be inspired by other people concepts. Who had them first I don't know. Alot I think people lift from old RM portfolios. They call it "researching" the market.
examples include
gold fish jumping, headsetted call centre, nests with golden eggs etc.

You can tell blantant copy efforts more clearly when its from low selling items as there will be less of them. It looks like there's some unwritten rule once 50 people copy someones elses idea then its free game.

Yes, an increase for contributors seems impossible, given the gloomy Q3 numbers they just released:

- Quarterly revenue increases 41% from prior year period to $59.6 million
- Adjusted EBITDA increases 24% to $12.8 million
- Quarterly image downloads increase 35% to 25.4 million
- Revenue per download increases 4% to $2.35

Hard times indeed.  And they have a new family of investors to feed.

Should we whip the hat around for some loose change to keep them afloat. Or get some of SJ's rich Australian friends to send over some koala fur coats to keep them warm through the winter.   (see stockbo thread)

General Stock Discussion / Re: October Earnings
« on: November 01, 2013, 16:29 »
Earnings for the year to date are about 10% down. Almost entirely to drop in revenue from Istock. I don't find this surprising.

Working through submitting my port to deposit at the moment. Looking at the earning ratings on the right that could pick up for the drop in earnings from Istock.

RPD at dreamstime was the worst this year (83c) so although I had okay DL numbers earning there were a bit down. (I had a couple of months @ 160-200c)  I suppose in defence the RPD at DT was higher than SS this month.

Another thing I should investigate is why my earnings are so low at fotolia. 4% of monthly earnings. Some people must be doing much better there.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Incredible rejection reason
« on: October 30, 2013, 03:25 »
there's a bit of history behind the rejection. At one time agencies were accepting images people downloaded off the NASA website and submitted them unchanged or slightly edited for sale as RF images. After a bit of an uproar some of the agencies stopped accepting NASA images. Some will still allow you to use a part of a NASA image for a background or component of an image. eg a shot of earth from outaspace in the background.

182
I'm not on Yay or Zoonar so if your images are from there there must be others.

My agencies are IS,SS,FT,DT,123,BS,Veer,photodune and stockfresh.

I'm guessing Fotolia

Is this one of the deals where we only get paid for a normal download if someone purchases from their site. i.e. no extended license even though some people would consider this to be items for resale kind of arrangement.

Anybody know anything about this site.

http://www.greatamericanart.com

They have some of my images for resale on canvas etc.

They could have announced breaking news that as expected by halving the sales price non-exclusives now have half the revenue.

submit to dreamstime, get some sales and choose the best to submit for your istock application

These price changes at iStock also affect how many RC credits we get per sale right? So not only are we getting paid WAY less per download, but we have WAY less chance at reaching the next (huge) 1% bracket. Am I getting that right?

Yes

Yikes. This deal just keeps getting better...  >:(

don't worry give it another 3-6 months and you be able to experience the next chapter

« on: July 21, 2013, 02:13 »
sale numbers are down and $ are 75% down so far this month.

Now not only are they the lowest % commission they're also slashed the prices.

Awesome work Istock !

I hope they don't win any customers back at all.

191
awesome news, they should run a discount though $1.99 is far to expensive.

Is there anything to stop Getty from forming another company that handles these type of deals to cream off another 50-80% ?

Photography Equipment / Re: Monopod advice
« on: June 01, 2013, 18:14 »
53 grams. ?? The weight of a mars bar.

I have a monfroto monopod but I don't use it for travelling I only use it with my 100-400mm for sports and wildlife which it works quite well. It probably most useful for not having to hold the weight inbetween shots.
Landscapes and alike it wouldn't be much use.

Ask Yuri he was recommending a monopod for studio work with lights.

Are there really so many new people rushing into stock? Here at msg the members seem to be around 32k+ for quite a while now. I think the "gold rush" phase where everyone with a DSLR came into it are over.

Now you see more pros moving in, but I am sure there are many more amataeurs abandoning stock every day than newcomers. The quality necessary to make it is very high and most people dont want to go and plan a shoot, scout for a location, find models etc...

So I think if you are really serious about stock you can and will make it. But you need to be at a professional level to start, but the OP clearly has that.
+1
if the returns aren't there alot of people will drop out. Of course there will be hard core people who do it for a couple of dollars. Professionals aren't going to keep spending money to produce stock that loses them money so the market will level out to just above the poverty line ;)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: yuri arcurs is IS exclusive
« on: May 18, 2013, 23:46 »
however you paint this story, Yuri did the math and finally realized there's more money to be made selling on Getty than selling on 50+ micro agencies together.

or at least that's the case with the contract he signed as he will probably earn 30-40% from each sale + eventual bonuses.

moral of the story : the slice of the pie for random microstockers is getting smaller and smaller and it will be soon game over in 2-3 years from now.

the only ones surviving in this mess will be the few ones able to cut costs to the bone preserving a "good enough" quality, but it's gonna be a survival job, nobody will get rich with that.

Isn't the slice of the microstock pie getting bigger for random microstockers because the factories are moving on ?

Veer / Re: Veer Uploading Down?
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:56 »
No I haven't tried that, sounds like a PITA.

A few of my photos I resize to help with noise, atilla's artifacts and alike.
For example I have one photos that is 12MP and file size is about 4.8MB and it still won't go through their uploader.

I've managed to get the one or two to go through, like 1 out of 10 attempts

123RF / Re: Buyout Request for Image
« on: May 03, 2013, 16:41 »
I think that 7-10x maximum projected yearly earnings would be probably the worth of the image.

However you don't want to sell something too cheap. i.e. if its sold once for 20cents your not going to both to sell the rights for $2
So I would set a value of a minimum of $500

It also comes down to how hard it was to shoot and how unique it is. If its a sunset or a carrot isolated on white I'd set my minimum price lower than if it was a photo of Ghandi and Elvis playing chess on the surface of mars.

You could take the money and pay off your homeloan and financially you would be better off than keeping the image.

Dreamtime have sell the rights option, check out their recommended prices aswell.

123RF / Re: What's the best uploading method for 123RF?
« on: May 03, 2013, 07:05 »
Hm ok, I guess I'll look into changing my work flow instead.  Thanks!

your not on istock then.

Yes I am, and I get emails from them for every image.

You think the uploading process for Istock is easier than 123rf ?
Each to their own.
