Canon / 5d mk4
« on: August 28, 2016, 01:12 »
How come nobody is talking about the new 5d ? normally everybody is drooling to get new camera to solve their issue of falling sales. Looks good to me though very expensive, obviously overkill for microstock.

What's on your wish list ?
Mine is New 5d , Water housing or Drone.

I found a use of one of my photos which had cc attribution. When I contacted them about it they said that they had purchased a license and the website creator had put cc by mistake on my image, they had others images on the website that were cc. So it pays to be professional when contacting people about use of images as they may be doing the right thing.

I definitely agree that the Istock Rc system is stupid, especially when subs or partner program don't contribute. Well it's not stupid it achieves what they wanted, stripping royalties from contributors

No complaints about the RC system on 123 from me. We have to accept that these systems are the way the wind is blowing and the one on 123 has perfectly achievable levels if you are any good. I am level 6 and my skill level is pretty average. The problem is with sites like istock or ss through bigstock, where the system is no system at all. It is just a way to claim they pay much higher comissions than they do.

If you're level 6 at 123 then I'd imagine your being modest with your skill level or have one massive portfolio.

50% down, portfolio 100% bigger. Credit sales are a trickle

dashboard is better, time to fix the upload process that most of the time doesn't work. More importantly they could get rid of their ridiculous RC system and move me back to 36c per subscription while they're at it.

How many kids are killed each year playing with their parents guns ?

If everybody had guns on them in public and one person shoots someone then everybody pulls guns how do you know who are the "goodies" and who are the baddies. I can understand the argument about having a gun in your home for defence a lot more than the public situation.

I try to upload via stockuploader  - ftp  but fails.(Use to work no problem)
Would there be a setting in that software that I might need to change due to some change with the shutterstock servers or something like that ?

Thanks for the suggestion.

You're still allowed to own a gun  in Australia, just not assault rifles designed to kill multiple people. People are the problem but access to assault weapons increases the ramifications when they do the wrong thing.

Did they have automatic assault rifles when the constitution was written ? Are there any limits on the type of gun you can buy in the us ?

I try submitting with stock uploader and it fails.
I try using the web based uploaded and it says doesn't support file type jpg ???
Anybody having same problem ?
I even try with files that I have previously uploaded there and get the non supported file type. Same files upload to other sites no problem.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
« on: June 17, 2016, 06:22 »
I was referring to the 24-70 f2.8 which is about double the price. I didn't even know there was a 24-70 f4 I had a quick look and it's cheaper in some instances than the 24-105. You learn something every day. Too many choices,  5d mk4 hmmm

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT has died for me
« on: June 17, 2016, 03:22 »
my earnings at DT are around 50% of what they were 4 years ago.
My number of sales have reduced but also RPD which was $1.40  now it's around $1

Subs use to get more money per download for higher level images
I use to get 50% commission on all credit sales.

I'm submitting to DT less photos per month than I did 4 years ago so some of the drop would be due to that.

The only people I see that are exclusive at DT seem to have around <1 sale per photo in the portfolio.

I got my payout today, and also got some images reviewed from back in April !!!!

I just use the Istock release, it has been accepted by SS,FT,DT,BS,CS,123rf,stockfresh etc.

I Cant guarantee that all agencies will accept it, or what will happen in the future.

« on: June 17, 2016, 03:07 »
This lens is great, wide enough for most stuff 105mm lets you do some close ups.
I use it all the time when travelling.

Not the finest canon lens but lives on my camera 80% of the time.

Its an L series lens, so more than adequate for microstock.

People talk about the 24-70mm being much better image quality but costs a lot more, no 105mm.

If your 99% sure just go and buy it, more fun shooting than worrying about 0.1% sharpness improvement at F4 etc.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Income lose 2013 to 2016
« on: June 04, 2016, 02:00 »
Sorry to see such a big loss in income. I can assure you if they're selling buckets of independents files they're not mine.

I'm down about 20% on revenue at Istock over 4 years whilst doubling my files.

As the size of the overall library is bigger there's got to be some dilution effect due to competition but my image quality has improved.

I don't think istock could have managed the situation much worse than they did.

They key issue is that they burnt their existing contributors that provided them with great content, and flooded their library with cr^p.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Textile design copyright?

The only one that I would consider generic would be the black one with the ice cream cone cloned away.
Maybe you could do some colour substitute and make a red, blue or yellow one. But I wouldn't bother making 100 million different combinations

Well if the problems are with automatic software at SS they don't use it a BS. Images refused for noise and focus at SS accepted at BS.  last batch 90% approval at BS 50% at SS

Bigstock.com / Re: How Much I can Make with 500 images
« on: July 18, 2015, 18:41 »
I was talking about across the top five agencies, missed that this was in the Bigstock section. Imagine earning anything like that off of Bigstock! You could maybe even make it up a rank!

Hence my clarification question. Bigstock makes 3% of my earnings. so if 3% = $4900 then the drinks are on you ;)

Bigstock.com / Re: How Much I can Make with 500 images
« on: July 18, 2015, 02:06 »
Here's actual numbers: $2700-$4900+/month or $0(literally)/month

I just checked and those are the actual figures for my top 500 and bottom 500 earning images this year

So you have 500 images that together produce more than $2700 each month?

Congrats, that's impressive.
Thanks, I do, those 500 images made me $2700 in the worst month of the year so far and $4900 in the best.

And that is a super misleading stat.

I have a very large portfolio, the next 500 best earning earn me half that, and those top 1000 make up more than 50% of my total sales. Above a certain quality threshold it is basically a numbers game. If you have one or two images in your portfolio of a few hundred images making you $5 a month when you have a few thousand you can multiply that up. If I just give you the stats of my best sellers I can make myself look like some kind of stock genius, when actually I am pretty average for a pro producer.

ETA just checked and my images for zero earnings for 2015 actually number close to 2000. I almost didn't want to check that, but how depressing, all that work for probably no returns at all!

On Bigstock or across all your agencies.  This is a confusing thread. :)
