My thoughts...

1) I like getting the tokens - I haven't used many of them yet, but i have downloaded a couple of photos for my own use.

2) I don't need photos often but when i do it is nice not to have to spend my own money. The other day i was building this new Microstock Photography Wiki (which is a whole other subject) and found a nice image of a lens and bought it. I understand the issue that if you don't buy photos then the tokens don't mean much to you... but as has been said, very few other sites give you anything for uploading (yes Fotolia paid cash for a little bit but who else gives you anything? iStock sure doesn't). I'm happy to get anything for my uploads - and as far as i know, nobody else is offering anything at this point. I'll take it.

3) Bryan has said there are things to come with the tokens so I'll be patient.

4) The tokens are worth more than the .30 if you buy photos... yes, that is the commission on the smallest image purchase, but if you went to buy tokens with cash, they'd cost you about a buck (they start at a dollar and go down depending on how many you buy)

5) Many other sites use this "token" concept but call it something different (iStock calls it a credit for example). I don't know why some are complaining about this concept.

6) LuckyOliver is only 3 months old... i'm patienly waiting to see more.

7) I personally think it is clear - you may use the tokens just as if you'd bought them with cash to buy other people's photos. No, you can't buy your own and it isn't ethical to set up a "i'll buy yours if you'll buy mine" network. But if you need photos, you can buy them from the inventory... and I have done that. And I haven't gotten a note from management asking me not to do it.

8 ) LO has done other things that I've not seen other micros do - for example, at the end of the last contest, they added 15% commission to all of the entries in the contest so now you get a bigger commission on those. They may not do it again, but i am pleased that they did it at all.

9) I do not have blinders and I'm not a paid stooge of LO. I'm just stating my own opinions :)

Off Topic / Re: Free speech

I had a portfolio on Totally Photos, and some earnings. I think the photographers there have been 'Totally' ripped off, and I am concerned about what is happening to my images.

TP has only been offline for a week or two - and maybe we should give them a bit of time to work things out. But I do understand the concern for your $ and images, i'm just suggesting we be patient.

The approvers forum, where such questions should have been addressed before the site closed, was dominated buy a nice group, whose niceness choked any freedom of speech. Any questions and comments that were not complimentary to the site were jumped on and accused of being negative, we were continually exhorted to be patient and wait, until it was too late. The 'Rah rah' element there made Istock seem quite timid.
Now I have seen a similar comment in this forum, and it concerns me. I love coming here and reading forthright and honest views and criticism of the stock sites. It has opened my eyes to a few things I had not thought about.
That is what we are here to do, not to criticise each others writing style. If we only write in an upbeat positive way the site will become stagnant and boring. Some people do take a negative view, it is in their personality. Good for them! It is another valid viewpoint to consider.

I assume your talking about me because of my comments in the Lucky Oliver thread. And it seems that i didn't really communicate very well my thoughts. I am in no way saying everyone has to post nothing but rosy, happy, the world is perfect comments. What i wanted to get across was that it is so easy to come to these forums and be negative (and believe me, i've done it myself)... what is more challenging and what i was hoping to communicate was that people maybe should think about the impact of their comments - and maybe just reconsider the tone of the comments because of how others might react. If you're considering XYZphoto and then read somewhere that site XYZphoto sucks and has an ugly website, I'll bet you won't go there to contribute. I know that i've read about some sites like that and made mental notes about not going there. All I ask is that you consider the impact of your comments before posting. Pretend you are the CEO of XYZphoto and think about how you'd feel if you read the comment you are about to post.

I posted several somewhat negative comments in the totally photos forum and i later regretted it because i didn't go to their managment with comments and questions first. If you think about it, it is much easier to come to a forum like this and say things and if you think about it, if you would write the comments as if you were sending them to the CEO of the company, i'll bet you'd say them in a bit nicer way than if you were just coming to a forum and vent... and that's the way i would like people to think about posting here. Doesn't in any way mean you can't vent or be negative, but if you spent a few more minutes composing your comments as if you were saying them directly to the CEO, I'll bet you'd word things a little more on the positive side.

As to complaining publicly, I did so on purpose. It is important for Bryan and the other founders of LO to get feedback. By posting a complaint here, I was hoping to generate a conversation that would be useful to LO as they get a handle on marketing, promotion, and site design. If a lot of people had chimed in with, "Yeah. This stuff is juvenile," then I'd say Bryan and company would have something to think about. If people had said, "We love the site as it is," then LO also has important information.

Just because a comment is negative doesn't mean it shouldn't be said publicly.

If your intent was to spark conversation, then i suggest maybe you should try something different in your posting. The initial post in this thread was just a negative comment - which tends to spur more follow on negative comments. It might have been better if you said something like "i don't care for the style of the LO site, what do you all think?" -- to me, that sparks conversation... what you said doesn't and in my opinion doesn't help anyone - it just drives people away from possibly contributing - both to the conversation and to LO as contributors. Again, just trying to propose a different style.

I agree that the conversation should be promoted. I'm not exactly sure i buy into the style of the site either, but i do believe it will differentiate them to a big degree and i'm willing to go with it. What do others think?

let me start by saying... i'm a fan of LO and i hope they blow thru the roof and yes i'm a 'carney'

a couple of comments on this thread... and just take it as another way of looking at things...

my opinion is that it is nice to have feelings about a site, but if you want to help the site take off, then maybe you should consider biting your fingers instead of posting (what i perceive to be) negative comments. There are a lot of people reading here and if some of them are considering uploading to places like LO and they read comments like some of what i've read here today, then they may certainly think that they shouldn't join up.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't have these feelings, but why not just write to Bryan directly? He responds to all the emails i've sent him and he's seemingly open to support as well as criticism. Venting here only keeps people away from the site.

again, that's my opinion and not meant to hurt anyone's feelings - just maybe a different way of thinking about public posting about new sites like luckyoliver.

let's not forget that iStock was the leader in smarty pants comments on their site as well as in emails - so it isn't just LO. And IS kept it up for years and years (tho they have scaled that back a bunch in the last 1/2 year).

lastly, it seems to me that designers are a spunky bunch and many of them are younger and i think aiming a site with a bit of a style will indeed draw many people in - it may scare some away too but you never know - the stodgy boring sites may scare away some designers as well. Time will tell if the 'big top' theme will work.
