Canon / Firmware update for Canon EOS 7D
« on: August 07, 2012, 17:54 »
The new big firmware update  for Canon EOS 7D is now available at:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d/#DriversAndSoftware

OK, so it seems you have a different problem.
But you can ask support to set this right for you for all images in your portfolio.
I did this different times before and it was allways quickly solved.

In my case Fotolia was right. The settings were correct, only not on my computer.

54
When reading this,  I checked my portfolio at Fotolia and found that all the X extended licences seem to be set to 20.
So I asked support to set them correct again. Their answer was that on their website all looks good.
They couldnt verify what my problem was.

Well, the problem must be on my side then. I installed Opera and Google Chrome (I use Firefox as my standard browser) and logged in.
All was correct indeed. I couldnt find anything wrong.
So the problem must be in Firefox.
Searching further at last I found that something was wrong with the settings for Fotolia in Picniche toolbar. When setting  the number  for the extended licenses correct the problem was solved.

(I was getting this problem after installing a new harddisk and a clean install of all the software. I missed the correction of this setting.)

If what you have found seems to be the same problem you can found the solution in: Extra/Picniche-tools/Options contributor/Tab Workflow.

55
Filezilla has a 'server-version' on their website too.

Are you sure the rejection is only OOF?
To me it is always: Your image is out of focus OR FOCUS IS NOT WHERE WE FEEL IT WORKS BEST.
And this last part can mean everything. No matter if an image is made with F1.8 or with F16.

I believe you when you say your images are sharp, but if THEY FEEL that the focus is not where it works best.
We feel is so subjective that it cant even be discussed.

When logged in at FP clicking manage portfolio and then at the upper left side of the page you see My FTP.
Theres the info you need for your FTP upload program. It works with Filezilla.
Once I had problems with the FTP uploading too, when I send them an email the problem was quickly solved.

Using Filezilla, uploading and submission is easy. Mostly I do a lot of images uploading (in the background when in between doing other work) at once. Barely any rejections and fast help when having problems. Sometimes I had a sale in the past.
Lately the site seems to come alive (at least for me) and now I m having regular sales there.

123RF was also slow with sales when starting there, but they seem to grow fast now, giving me monthly payouts. Who knows what will happen to FP?

59
No, there is no easier way. If there is, I want to know how too...
They can send you emails, but it is the same info as there is in your Dashboard.
It is weird that they don't show the title of the image when an image is rejected as they do with the accepted images.
With copy and paste the number in "ID search" it is possibly easier to find the rejected images.

Not that it is very interesting. For most rejections are: technical problems. Then you see a list with so  many possible reasons that it is impossible to find out which one is the special reason the image was rejected. I would like to see more detailed info from reviewers. This way it is difficult to learn from rejections, for images seem to be rejected for technical problems too when they don't want the subject of the image. So you can never be sure what the real reason is.

Lately I see something strange: most of the sales I have at FT are getting wrong reported.
The sales are correct in My dashboard, but one time the sale is one cent too much, then the next sale is one cent less. Or vice versa.
Happens with most of the sales and it is always only one cent.
I suppose the total amount will be correct, but it is weird. I am using Picniche and I see this only with Fotolia.
Anyone else seeing the same?

By the way: my sales are slowly going up all the time at FT. No big changes.

Off Topic / Re: PayPal Scam Message
« on: May 01, 2012, 14:21 »
Yes, what I did understand was that it wasn't from Paypal.
Of course, otherwise we should quickly have a lot of problems!  ;)
And I also did understand that you made no payment.
If I understand right it was a fake Paypal phishing mail and as long as you don't click the link there is no problem.
That's probably also the reason I never saw these mails. My internetprovider intercepts all mails with viruses, spam and phishing.
Thank you for the clarification!

I have never seen such a message. But over time I will perhaps got one, so I have a question:
It seems that you can get a message from Paypal that you sent a payment to someone(which you didnt) and when doing nothing with this message nothing further happened?

This can indeed not often enough be said:

This is an answer to this statement:

main idea about this, is that IRS from USA, is actually illegal organization, but, even such, - they are taking 30 percent of my income on getty images for example (and did for american sales for other sites, while i was not exclusive on is.).

The way IRS is taxing income from stockagencies seems to be internationally discussed, but other wise than you propably should expect.
Following the rules of the European Union  agencies based in EU have to withhold a certain percentage from ALL sales, no matter from what country the buyer is.
IRS only withhold a percentage from sales made by US buyers, not from ALL sales. This is favourable when the law in your country doesnt ask from you to give up world income. So income from stock seem to be not taxable in such countries (when I am well informed). People living there are losing a percentage from US sales from their income when the agency is US based, but a percentage from ALL sales when the agency is EU based.
When you are paying taxes in your own country, it will not make a big difference in most cases for already paid taxes can be settled (or is it cleared?) with the taxes you still have to pay. This is likewise discussed in the topic Taxes at Panthermedia.

I am not discussing if it is illegal or not that governments oblige their citizens to pay taxes.
Such a discussion will endure until the end of time. ;D

Isn't there also an option on SS to upload your images and when accepted let them stay deactivated?
When you are already accepted this option can be used to build up a good portfolio first at SS before dropping exclusivity with DT.

Until now PM is the only agency doing it this way as far as I know. But it seems that this is the correct way following the rules of the European Union.
And indeed: they withold the taxes from your total income no matter where the sales came from.
US based agencies do it different, they only withold the taxes from sales made within the US and only when your country has no tax treaty with the US.
For the taxes in my country it makes no difference.

I don't know if there are big differences in tax laws on this point, but in my case I can give up my total gross 'world income' (For PM that is 85 percent+the 15 percent taxes they have already withold) , then deduct my costs and then deduct the 15 percent from PM as already paid tax. What rests at last is my taxable income.
US based agencies withold nothing in my case, but if my country shouldn't have a tax treaty with the US, it still shouldn't make a difference, for I can deduct the already in the US paid taxes like I can do with PM.

I suppose it is a question of time and all agencies are obliged going to do this. When based in the European Union I expect that they are going the same way as PM does. What surprises me is that Fotolia for example followed the US way, while based in France.
Perhaps they have their headquarter in the US?

For the IRS the US way is in fact more unfavourable, for they only receive a small part of the total taxes. They left the rest to the country the contributor comes from.
To me it seems a more complicated way too, for this way the agencies have a whole administration to do about US- and non US sales.

Mostphotos.com / Re: ATTENTION: potental buyers
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:06 »
Portfolios of topcontributors barely get likes.
Only when you are so extremely active on the site that you become the 'most active contributor', your own portfolio probably will be more visible to buyers for the link is on the frontpage.
Temporarily.
For it is not to do to hold on giving likes night and day to stay in the picture forever. Unless you have nothing else to do, of course, like taking photos or something...

I suppose that MP was thinking that by this system top portfolios should go up and bad portfolios should go down. It doesn't work at all.
Thereby comes that an image not can be judged correctly, for it can not be easily seen at 100 percent. Lots of likes are given to thumbnails, which sometimes shows very bad images when clicking on them. A like cannot be undone. And it seems to be only a small group of contributors that are active with giving likes.
Giving a 'thumb down' or unlike for an image results immediately in a massive act of revenge against your own portfolio.
Some contributors seem to have switched of the possibility to give likes totally. I do not know what kind of effect this has to the visibility of their portfolio.

When MP doesn't want to review all images themselves, in my opinion they should do best to remove at least the worst quality from their site. Otherwise over time finding good images should become like finding a needle in a haystack to buyers.
Another point is that I see a lot of images that should be editorial that are uploaded as commercial RF. I am afraid that MP will be hold responsible when they will ever be sued for misuse, for they allowed this.

On the other hand: they are a growing agency, you can have regular sales there when you build up a good portfolio, they pay in Euro and you can download your own portfolio when needed (Don't need that: I have two backups.)

Panthermedia.net / Re: taxes at PantherMedia

The problem here is that Panthermedia does not ask for a tax treaty as far as I have seen. They simply seem to withhold the taxes from every contributor.

When paying taxes in your own country  there is not only the obligation to pay your taxes, there are also certain rights. In my country it is the right to also give up the expenses that I have to make for my job and that lowers the tax I have to pay.
But also there is a law that I have to give up my world income which means that I have to pay taxes for all income I have worldwide. Not every country has this law.

I did not ask this questions only for myself. Every country has its own tax laws, but also the rights can be different.

For it is all a bit confusing for me too, I called my financial advisor about these questions and he said that Panthermedia acts correct following the rules of the European Union and also that there is a discussion international about the US doing it not correct.  He also said that this way I can claim a total gross income, then deduct my costs and what is witholded by PM (and/or eventually by others) and pay taxes over what is left. He said this way only contributors from countries that have no tax treaty with the country the agency is based in AND having tax laws in their own country that doesnt accept the taxes being paid elsewhere, can get double taxed. But on the other side there also can be contributors that are not obliged to give up world income in their own countries and are not taxed over their foreign income at all (until now by PM.!  ;)).

68
Thank you. Things seems to be allright now. :)

The only very disappointing thing that is left (at least to me), is that my sales at PM haven been fallen back to almost zero in the last months, where at all other agencies they are climbing fast.
No idea what the reason can be.
Hopefully this will also go better soon...  ;)

and is it after that not needed to give up the not withholded part of the sales from Panthermedia as an income to the tax department in your own country?
Correction:
What I mean is: in the contributor's country

US based agencies withhold taxes only from sales that are made by US citizens AND only when the contributors country has no tax treaty with the United States.

So if I understand this right: Does Panthermedia withhold taxes from ALL sales made by German as well as not German buyers  and is it after that not needed to give up the not withholded part of the sales from Panthermedia as an income to the tax department in your own country?

If the answer to this question is Yes: Is it not possible to do this the same way as the US based agencies does: only withhold taxes from sales made by German buyers AND only when the contributors country has no tax treaty with Germany?

I am paying all taxes from all my income (even from all stockagencies) in my own country, for my country has a tax treaty with the US. I am not sure the taxdepartment will accept that I do not give up income from Panthermedia for the reason taxes are already paid in Germany.

Computer Hardware / Re: Travel Ultrabook
« on: March 04, 2012, 11:40 »
Asus is a good brand. Build motherboards, graphic cards in a lot of new computers for many people over the years and never seen any hardware problems. Also the Asus notebooks I ve seen seem to do their job well. They also give two years of guarantee on notebooks instead of one, as most of the others do and they are not very expensive when making a comparison of the specs to same type of notebooks with other brands . This is based on my own experience, I have no statistic info. Also prices may differ in other parts of the world, dont know...

Also a point to think of: all harddisks has become very expensive lately thanks to the floods in Thailand. I suppose this will be temporary. An option is perhaps to buy a notebook with a smaller harddisk and replace it in the future with a bigger one. You need to have a backup of your OS at that time to replace everything as this info is on the old harddisk in a separate partition.

Cant tell you anything about the screen quality of the notebooks and if they can easily be callibrated. That is an important thing for photographers when you want to use it for working on your photos cq illustrations.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copyspace or Copy space?

Didn't know that... I suppose this is not true for words that ought to be hyphenated?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copyspace or Copy space?
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:58 »
A lot of English words are split up in two words.
A lot of buyers are not native English and perhaps are not always sure about the spelling of their search.

So when the subject is a two-word-word or the words are hyphenated I always use all possible combinations.
Indeed like: copy, space, copy space, copyspace, copy-space.

But I am not sure using the words apart are confusing for search systems.
Space and copy apart have total different meaning other than copy space.
When searching only for space or for copy all images with copy space in the keywords will show up too.
Using this as keyword seems not useful to me, since agencies give the advise to leave copy space in all images!
For the same reason it is useless to keyword millions of images beautiful.

Microbius: Why do you think that hyphenated words like copy-space are a waste of time?
A lot of words are spelled hyphenated in English (at least according to my Dictionary).

I did a quick calculation: Yes, you both are right and the info on Alamy's website is a bit confusing.
To get 24M you need at least 8,2 megapixel.
What Alamy says is that you can use a 6 mp camera and then upsize the images to 24M.
So my mistake...
