General Midstock / Re: Alamy question...

What BaldricksTrousers said, but be careful that the modus is 8 bit and not 16!
They accept 6 mp and higher and upsizing not always give acceptable results.

Alamy Submission guidelines
We need:
Images from at least a 6 megapixel DSLR or more. See here for: Recommended digital camera list
JPEGs saved at a high quality setting (i.e. Photoshop level 10 or above).
Alpha-numeric file names ending in .jpg.
RGB files, not single channel greyscale or CMYK.
Uncompressed file sizes of more than 24MB. This means you should make your JPEG file from an 8 bit TIFF file that is at least 24MB. If you have a camera that is capable of producing an uncompressed 8 bit file of over 24MB then leave it that size.

Step by step:
-open image in PS (8 or 16 bit) as .tif or .psd file
-prepare the image as you wish
-control to set back the imagemodus to 8 bit
-control image size in Image size dialogue box
-the size is found directly under Image size.(called: Pixel dimensions ....M. That ....M should be 24M or higher)
-upsize when needed (and when quality is good enough to upsize)
-save as .jpg in highest possible quality

Agencies seem to have only three goals as it comes to contributors these days:

-Keep back new contributors from joining
-Discourage contributors who want to learn, work hard and steadily build up a good portfolio
-Drive away experienced and high selling contributors to the macros and to search other and new ways to sell their work

Well, I suppose they can spill their lifeblood as they wishat least for the time being.

But why don't you send it back then? With 6 years guarantee?

What about Sirui?
Seems to be a Gitzo clone.
They give guarantee for 6 years to the tripod and 2 years to the heads.

Their collection seems very complete with specialties like a series that have one leg that can be disconnected to use as a monopod, or a series that can be totally  flat folded ( 4 cm) and some can be very short shove in (42 cm) by using 6 segments while still being 1.69 cm high.
Has someone any experience with them?

Hello all,
Last months I saw the number of the images in my portfolio with Panthermedia declining.
All are older images. They got pending status again, but could not be found in the Pending section.
When hovering over them it says that they are accepted and on-line, but they are not.
So I contacted PM over that problem and got the following answer:

Quote
Thank you for your question.

Your photos are stored temporarily.
Please do not delete.
For this reason the number of pictures is not correct.
Here you can read about it:

Hello photographers and photographers,

We have bought a completely new storage system. In migrating from the old to the new system, we need to outsource for capacity reasons some older pictures. First time being, all images without typing or editorial recommendation which received after 31.12.2009 and no click more older than 31/12/2009 are for the time being outsourced and are temporarily not available until January. Note: The script runs about 2 days, so that only at weekends, all captured images are swapped.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but in the course of January, an even faster and more scalable storage system have. Your images will be temporarily hidden from then again be found.

And:

http://www.panthermedia.net/index.php?page=forum.php&forum_action=forum_viewtopic.php&forum_id=382342

Hi all,

Our storage has unfortunately 3 weeks delivery delay. In this respect, the dubbing moves back to that period, unfortunately. We are very upset about the delay in this project, which would have been completed in August 2011 must be. To draw a positive conclusion, however, we envisaged a better system than originally, which for you and us in terms of speed and scalability, but offers some advantages. So we are in terms of physical storage no more limits.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
Best regards,

The forum is in German, but in the answer it was kindly translated for me. On the forum I was reading that there are people with rejected images (that are not really rejected) too.
Anyone who has an account with Panthermedia and has problems with disappeared images hereby is informed. Dont delete any of your images!

(I have searched MSGforum first, but couldnt find anything about this subject. So when I have overseen it and it is already known, this post can be deleted.)

PicNiche Toolbar / Re: some little problems
« on: December 30, 2011, 12:54 »
No need to make excuses. You are offering a free tool and overall it seem to work well for most people. I dont see much complaining on the site. I suppose you have only 24 hrs in a day too?  ;)
None the less it is good to stay informed about problems now and then, I think

What I do is the following: When starting Firefox, I am logging in to all the sites where I have an account (when they dont open or update automatically). I also start the earnings page at 123RF and  fill out the captcha.
While all the pages on all the sites are left open, I refresh the toolbar. Works for most sites and as long as Firefox stays open the sites are updated when new sales come in.

Personally I would like to see 123RF staying in the toolbar.

Alamy.com / Re: Editorial images
« on: December 30, 2011, 03:13 »
Until now Ive only RF images with Alamy. I am working on a selection of RM that (of course) are not on Microstock. Until now I am not sure if it makes sense to upload these images as RM to Alamy either so I have hold them back.

Recently I uploaded a few editorials that also are on microstock, where they  are licensed as RF editorial. When passed QC I found out that they can only be licensed as RM, for I have no releases for them. Searching the site I found what Alamy says about RF and RM and I deleted the files. So it seems I did the right thing according to Alamys rules. When Alamy chooses to change an RF in RM, well it is their site and their responsibility.

Stands the problem that a buyer only can be sure about the use of an image when it is sold as RM on one agency only. But when agencies allow contributors to submit the same image to different agencies as RM, the rest is indeed the responsibility of the agencies and the buyers.

There is so much to learn and to read and it can so easily be misunderstood.
This makes a few things clearer to me. Thank you for your info!

By the way: Until now it is a pleasure to upload to Alamy, for no more rejections like: white balance may be incorrect  for an image made at sunrise or sunset and for OOF when submitting a tacksharp image made with F16, remote control and a tripod  ;D

The micros "RF editorial" licences set a similar usage restriction - and there is no reason you cannot sell an "RF editorial" file as an RM file - AS LONG AS you don't offer any exclusive usage rights.

Of course you cannot do that when selling the same image elsewhere. That is clear to me.

Perhaps you are right, but here: http://www.alamy.com/forums/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=11316
is a discussion on the Alamy forum saying that selling images as RM when they are also sold as RF with other agencies is not allowed by Alamy.

From Alamy:
Quote
As per the terms and conditions of the Alamy contributor agreement:
2.2 You cannot submit identical or similar images to Alamy as both Royalty-Free and Rights Managed. The licence type on Alamy for an image must be the same as the licence type for that image and similar images which you have on other agency websites.

When I read this well, this question was about commercial use of images and the answer from Alamy was about all type of images.
So when I understand that right, Alamy says it is not allowed by them, commercial use or not.
For me the question stands if this rule is also for RF editorial vs RM editorial, when you restrict the use to non-commercial use only.
English is not my native language, so is there something I did read and/or understand wrong?

Alamy.com / Re: Editorial images

When it is true what you say then RM means nothing at all.

A buyer has to pay more for an RM image only to find out that he has to do deal with restrictions that he shouldnt have problems with when he buys the same image as RF. And he cannot be sure that the image is used elsewere under  an RF license.
It seems to me that the buyer not gets what he wants then.

When using the example of the two political parties again: then there is also no way left to avoid the risk that your opponent uses the same images or models for their campaign too. (Unless you hire your own photographer of course.)
Even not buying exclusive images or images from exclusives at Istock, for they are RF too and can be sold to different parties at the same time.

The only way to avoid this type of situations is buying RM images, but then it has not to be sold as RF!  And also not as RM with two different agencies!

About editorials: they have restricted use already. The only reason for buying RM editorials lays in the option to be the only one who can use the image for a certain period of time. Why should newspapers and magazines be interested in that option?
Again: the only way to avoid the risk that others use the same image at the same time is to hire your own photographer.
But when it can be sold at other agencies too as RM,  I see no meaning in the whole RM thing. Why shouldnt it then be sold as RF editorial too?

You should read this-
http://www.youngimaging.com/Article-WhyNotLicenseAnImageAsRFAndRM.asp

To me this article seems not saying all.
I agree when it comes to the global use of RF and RM. He is totally right that you must not change RF to RM. Once RF, always RF.
But what he tells not in this article is that an image can be (legally) uploaded as RM to different stock agencies, which makes it also difficult for buyers to control the use of it! (This seems not to be allowed by Getty Images.)
And editorial use is also different (as far as I can see it). In fact when in Microstock an image is set to be strictly used editorial it cannot be used for commercial purposes. When on Alamy the same image is set RM AND set to be strictly used editorial, it seem to me the same thing: it can also not be used for commercial purposes. What is the difference then only the name of the licence form?

Of course you cannot sell an image elsewhere when selling it exclusive at one agency.

On the Alamy forum someone wrote that in fact editorial images also ought to be RM at microstock agencies, for they nearly always contain copyrighted material. And RF cant be controlled.

Quote
So someone can pay Alamy to use it for a year, then they are not allowed to any more. Someone can pay for an RF licence and they can use it for ever. There is no legal conflict between the two.

To me this feels strange: why should you have RF and RM when it can be mixed up? RM is not only for a using an image for a period of time, but also to control the use elsewere.  Like we saw when two political parties in a country were using the same model in their campains!
But that is about commercial use. To me it is clear that you must not do this. Commercial RF cannot be commercial RM.

But editorial?
What can be the problem? Two newspapers or magazines using the same image? You can see that often. So why should an image not be RF editorial on microstock agencies and RM editorial on Alamy? This question I have seen more than once, but no one gives a good explanation why this is not possible or allowed, otherwise than: RF should not be set to RM.
Even on the Alamy site I cannot find a clear explanation to this question.

To make myself clear: I dont upload edorial images to Alamy when already on microstock, but I am a Why? person. I want to understand the reasons (and the problems).

Reading your answer in the topic: 'photoshop before Lightroom', it seems that I misunderstood what your problem is.
English is not my native language (and it is not an easy language too) and for I now don't know what you exactly meant with you question, perhaps this is helpful to you:

You can download a free pdf-file of her book here with a lot of info about LR.
Maybe you can find the answer to your question in that book.

For I am working all the time this way, I am sure it is possible.

My workflow: Copy the raw-files from the card to my harddisk (into a map with date and subject of course). I make no changes to the files. The files are visible as the original raw-files copied from my card. Open LR. Choose: Import photos from disk in the Library. No changes are made during import. The raw-files are visible in LR as the original files from my card, cq harddisk. Make the changes I want in Develop. Right click on the image and choose: Edit in...Edit in Adobe Photoshop. In the pop-up window that appears I choose: Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments. Then the raw-file will be opened in Photoshop as a tiff or a psd file and as 8 or 16 bits (Belongs to what your settings in LR are). The changes I made in LR are visible in PS. After making changes in Photoshop: Save the file. It will be saved in LR with the changes I made in PS. In LR I have a tiff or PSD now next to my original now, with the changes made in PS visible. From this point I have different options when I need the image: save it also in PS as a JPG with the size and name I want, export it from LR as a JPG in the size and name I want, print it from LR etc...
It is also possible to repeat this with other settings. I can choose the psd/tiff-file as well as the original raw-file to open in PS. I get two tiffs or psd's next to my raw-file in LR. When opening the psd/tiff again in PS I see all the layers saved too, so I can make changes later.

My apologies when I totally misunderstood what your problem is, but this is what I thought that your problem was when I was reading your first post.
But when this is what you meant and it is still not possible to work this way, then perhaps the solution is in the link on the Adobe-site I sended you before.

After importing the files in LR, you can right click on a raw image (or on the thumbnail) and choose:"Edit in>Edit in Adobe Photoshop" from the list that appeared.
Then you get a pop-up screen with a few choices. The first is: Edit a copy with LR adjustments. When handling a raw-file the others options are grey. The image will be opened in Photoshop then as a PSD or a Tiff with the changes made in LR.
When I understood well what you meant and this is indeed what you are missing, then I think the solution is in the link from Adobe's website above.

Computer Hardware / Re: I think she is dying

Don't try to reinstall your OS!
When there is a memory defect reinstall will fail.

Data can also be backupped attaching the harddisk from your old computer to the new one.
Can also be done via USB.

Most of your data can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\........(.......=your user name).
For new harddisks are big enough these days: copy simply all your data from your old HD into a separate map on your new one.
When you miss something it can always be found in that map later. You can throw away the map after a few months.
Very good for simple copying is the small program Unstoppable Copier. Works very well.

Yes, perhaps you are right.
Only now I see:
Code: [Select]
YAY has to accept your price level. That cannot be for contributors.
I've searched the site, but cannot find anything else about API.
But it seems to me that when Yaymicro sends monthly reports to the resellers, we are paid at least a month later.
And that we get paid about 25 percent of the original sale. First Pixmac-Yaymicro 50/50 and then Yaymicro-Contributor 50/50.
Some of the resellers have higher prices.

Payment and Commission

You will get access to a control panel where you can see all downloads provided through the API. Every month or so we'll send you an invoice for all downloads provided through the API. Each agreement is negotiated separately. In general, commission to YAY is 50-60%. YAY has to accept your price level. You will get access to a control panel where you can see all downloads provided through the API. Billing is monthly.

I had a few too.
You can find the above information at Yay Image Bank and then API

This is not true. We have many editorial photos without release on-line at Zoonar. But you cannot sell them with RF-Licence.

My apologies. You are right and I need to do a better reading!

Is it also not true that Germany has a stricter law to this type of images?
You say that editorials  can only be sold as RM, but at all the other agencies there are hundreds of thousands of images with recognizable people, brands etc. in them and they are all RF. In fact the photographer is not allowed to make changes to the image. But they have to be marked as editorial only. And they must have a clear description and a date. In that way it is only allowed to use the image for news- or educational purposes. Does it matter that it is sold as RF when commercial use is forbidden?

When an image is unchanged and clearly is marked as editorial, it is the buyers responsibility to not use this image commercially. Not the photographer or the agency. The only thing is that the agency has a better control about what is happening with the images with RM.

Or do I miss something?

By the way: my nabour is 80 years old and a good man. Even if he is going to do so, I would not even think about it to make an image of him. Not to say to publish it and doing him harm in any way  ;)

They rejected some editorial photos of tennis player Ana Ivanovic, because they require a property release.

A few of my editorials with recognizable people in them was rejected by PM, but they gave no reason for the rejection. So I was asking myself why they were rejected.
Then I was reading about that problem in the topic about Zoonar here on MSG recently.
Panthermedia is German based.
According to the German law they have to ask for a model- or propertyrelease, even when the image is editorial.
I never heard about that either.
I am also not sure this is true, for I cannot find anything about this on PMs website.

Zoonar says that it is not needed to upload the releases, but they can ask you for them when needed.
I suppose that makes them possible to sell images in other countries where the law is different?

Perhaps PM (and Zoonar) should do better to place a message to the buyer under this type of  images: Cannot be purchased for use in Germany for this image has no model- or property release . Otherwise they miss a part of the market.
Even photojournalists working for newspapers must have releases then?
How do newspapers and magazines in Germany get photos of celebrities and sports published  when this is true?

No, its not the captcha. I can live with that.

I hate the rejection reason: Your image is out of focus...

I used a tripod, a remote control, manual focus and F13 and F16 for the images.  ::)

That book will have answers to the most of your questions about Lightroom, I think...
