New Sites - General / Re: something about stockmaxx?
« on: May 19, 2015, 17:18 »
same image numbers as Yaymicro.........

edit:  Yaymicro had added 4 more API to unselect, since last time I checked.  Stockmaxx was one of them.

setting price of $10 for HD seems like desperation to me, makes them look cheap.

edit to ad:   It appears you have a decent camera, 10 bucks is just way too low.  I find that with Pond5 it can take a while for sales to start after the videos are uploaded.

Stockxpert likely since labeled Collection:Hemera, even though they closed , you can must still request payment thru them.

I have my GH4 set on Cinelike D, MOV format, 3840x2160.  I think there was a helpful post on the SS forum on this issue.

I got one of those email as well.  I submitted some new cards last week, not sure what they are thinking.

Edit: ABC responded to my email saying that their email to me was in error.

Canon / Re: How good is the Canon SX520 HS bridge camera?
« on: January 24, 2015, 19:52 »
I think the days of getting good acceptance with those types of cameras are nearly gone.  Yes in perfect light, some shots from that camera might be acceptable.

Largely, what makes a good camera for producing quality stock images relates to the size of the sensor.  Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format, the SX520 has a 1/2.3" sensor size.  If you look at the link above, and look at the comparative size chart (top right), it shows the SX520 having the smallest size sensor.

For serious stock you likely need a 1" or larger sensor.  A good camera from this class is a Sony RX100, next size up are the 4/3 cameras many made by Panasonic, Fugi and Olympus.  Then you get to the APS-C which include the Sony Nex cameras, and most crop body Canon and Nikon.

If I was just starting out I would look at Keh.com at their verified used Equipment.  A canon Rebel T3i runs $300 - $400, and a used Canon 50 (nifty 50) is around $100, or a starter 18-55 is around $100 as well.

Like many have said, the easy fruit is long gone.  Many people have lots of images rejected for lighting issues with full frame cameras at Shutterstock today.  If you are going to make any money, you are going to have to get accepted at Shutterstock, and that would be a major achievement with a SX520

I found several products that were available on the main SS site, even some available 4K for those prices.  Unbelievable!!

I purchased one of those Benro A48F with S4 fluid head, which is a monopod with little flip down feet.  I was extremely skeptical before purchasing it, that it would be able to hold the camera upright and level.  After a slight adjustment to the ballhead at the base, it holds up my Panasonic GH4 with ease.  I wouldn't trust it enough to walk away, but its quick to set up, and stand right in front of me.  With practice smooth pans are possible, especially if I can brace the monopod against a nearby railing.  There are videos of people using it for a canon 5D with a big lens, not sure if I want to try that.

I have only had it a week, but I think with some practice, it will be less noticeable than setting up a regular tripod.

Adobe Stock / Re: Opting out of video subs
« on: September 02, 2014, 19:50 »
I just seems odd to me that last year when I thought about uploading footage to Fotolia, I made sure that the box was un-checked.  Then sometime between last year and now, the box disappeared, and now when it re-appears, it seems that its been checked (meaning to be included in the footage subs program).  Hmmmm

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS not reporting sales!
« on: August 21, 2014, 21:42 »
I asked shutterstock several weeks ago about apparent footage sales shown on the map, but didn't ever show up on the daily sales page.  They replied that when a customer downloads a purchased footage clip, after the initial sale, it still can show up on the map.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Best SLR/DSLR for video and stills
« on: August 16, 2014, 21:35 »
Biggest problem I see with the Sony A7r & A7s is the lack of a variety of full frame E mount lenses.  At least with a Canon body, there are a wide variety of lens available at many different price points from L glass to affordable options which can be useable for Stock images/video.

Photo Critique / Re: Thoughts on this image?
« on: August 05, 2014, 16:00 »
It seems to me to be a forestry cable skidder.  They stopped using them in the US about 25 years ago, when they started mounting a large grapple which allows trees to be picked up by the operator without leaving the safety of the cab.  The blade on the front is for minor road work and to push tree limbs around at the truck loading point.

Probably more than you wanted to know.........

Cameras / Lenses / Re: My Sony RX10 verdict after Nikon D200
« on: July 26, 2014, 21:13 »
I am curious how the Panasonic FZ1000 superzoom which uses the same sized sensor as the RX10 but with more zoom range and 4K video, will compare.

Not to replace my 60D, but perhaps as a travel camera or to experiment with 4K video.

I also use MPEG streamclip for preparing clips from my Canon 60D saving to photojpeg B mov.

Did anyone ever prove or disapprove the theory that a clipping path was only viable if the largest/native size was purchased?  Supposedly the image processor that creates the smaller sizes "damages the clipping path".

This theory came up again recently on Symbio, but I never saw the outcome.

They seemed to have had an image quality problem in the past.

Good luck getting images approved there after their new era.  My last review took almost 11 months and the majority of the rejection reasons were related to a font I used, one that was inserted on their own site, not one added from photoshop.  They started requiring 2 links to prove the images were actually yours.

Not sure its worth the effort there, it may have been worth it several years ago.

Pond5 / Re: Removing video files from Pond5
« on: March 07, 2014, 10:01 »
I think you should give it a few more months before making a decision.  It is widely believed that the views stat is broken.  Many have had clips with more downloads than views......

1.. The network must be a network and not some doomesdays preppers displaying their version. There must be a common vision, and a common display and gateway. There must be a goal for the entreprise, and it becomes meaningless when people wants freedom to upload pictures of their aunt on brown colours on the wall paper.
2.. There must be some kind of audit to maintain quality.
3...The network must be customer friendly.

I thought we had been over this enough already.  Your top 3 items above seem to spell out like another agency.  If it were that simple then many of the low earners on the list would be sucessful, but they aren't.

Warmpicture was such an effort with pics from many high quality lifestyle and other photographers, they gave up.

I wanted to try something different, something where I control online pics, prices, license terms, appearance, etc.  If it fails there isn't anyone to blame but me, but I will know I tried.

Maybe there is room for a self run coop, or it has been discussed somer smaller closed networks of like minded niche subjects.

You don't know what could happen until you try..........

I don't understand the sudden decision to turn off the symbiostock.org site, we have been encouraged to have technical dissusions over there rather than MSGroup. Now those discussions are hidden.

Why not slightly delay hitting the off switch until figuring out the way to make it read only.

All this "drama" just leads potential site starters to wonder if this is legit and "fuels the fires" of symbio's many detractors who love to tear it down.

**Kudos to Leo for quickly restoring the other forum in read only mode so the valuable technical data is available again***

Nikon / Re: Nikon D610 - Dirty sensor

I saw this article for new sensor cleaning tool, looks easier than the wet swabs.

Don't know if its just a ad or if it really works?

freelancer photographer Rick Wilson has hired a lawyer to pursue Zimmerman legally to stop the sale of the photo.
