Hi all,

It just so happened that I am in need of an image of a salmon jumping out of water which I cannot take right now so I have to buy an image.
What is the best deal to buy one image, or if somebody has it please post a link or send me a PM.

Thank you

Prvi maj se slavi samo u bivsim komunistickim zemljama, na zapadu toga i nema, hhhh. Oni imaju dan zahvalnosti, dan ovoga, dan onoga...

A i bolje sto ne slave i prvi maj, jer sto vise praznika, manje love od iStock, haha :D

Da samo ga spominju
Evo sa Wikipedia:
"International Workers' Day (a name used interchangeably with May Day) is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labor movement and left-wing movements. May Day commonly sees organized street demonstrations and street marches by millions of working people and their labour unions throughout most of the countries of the world although relatively rarely in the United States and Canada."
Ali je cudno da to potice ovamo sa zapada (iz Chikaga)

Is DT dying?

No, in fact they seem to be growing (according to Alexa.com):

Are you receiving a smaller share?

Probably!

Free images hunters traffic. That's the reason why DT says that giving free images is "good" for contributors. BS.

I gues you are right

For BigStock this April was the best month earnings in about a year! I think BigStock is not only coming back, the upswing in sales for me has been rapid over the last few months.

Not dead yet! Still kicking and getting stronger day by day. However I do hope you quit uploading there .... less competition for me. ;D

Hey Larry,
That is not fair.

@ KB
Yeah, BigStock is down about 15% for me too.

General Stock Discussion / Re: April Earnings Percentages
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:01 »

Since I started doing microstock in 2005, this is the first time that my year-over-year revenues for a month are down (and I have been submitting new images at about the same rate as always). :'(

Thanks for posting Michael.  Misery loves company - I am relieved it isn't just me, although I am sorry for both of us  :'(

FWIW Fotolia is the only site where I have had growth from last year to this one.  They are up by 16%.

Also interestingly, last April StockXpert was 6% of my income, and my income has dropped 7% from last year, so it would suggest that, in my case, loss of StockXpert sales has NOT been compensated by increases at other sites.

Me to, I am experiencing the same.
Only DT is 10% UP from last month, all others are down 10-15%.

Lisa, I am surprised that you are doing so poorly on Alamy. I am not better anyway.

I have the solution to make everyone happy.  If you're not selling well at Dreamstime, and filled with so much anger about it that you have to keep badmouthing DT here, stop uploading.  You'll save yourself a lot of hassle and frustration.  And you'll be providing less clutter for those of us who are doing extremely well at DT these days.  Plus, buyers won't have to sift through so many images they don't want, and the DT reviewers will have less work to do.  It's win-win-win-win!

You are missing something here

Lighting / Re: Help with Lighting Equipment Purchase
« on: April 25, 2010, 21:35 »
most common business mistake is to go for big toys that you don't need. 2 100w lights will be more than sufficient .. even if you later move into larger subjects like people. Air cushioned stands are a very wise choice .. doesn't provide functional benefits but it's a great insurance policy to prevent damages. For 99% still life a couple 2'x3' boxes will work in most cases .. full body people will require a larger box at least 4' .. 6' is better .. especially for outfits were skin tone in both legs & upper body needs to equalize. Trigger systems need to be either expensive battery or cheap in-line powered. Cheap battery units tend to miss-fire and create additional expense for batteries. In-Line powered receivers tend to never missfire, never be an inconvenience and never create additional expense.
Look at the price of replacement tubes before buying if you are going to be giving them heavy use. Trendy name brands can often cost you $150 just to replace the tube once it burns out .. Cheaper lights that don't spend their money marketing themselves to have a cool name will cost you maybe $15-25 to replace the tube.

Hello, Randy McCown, you have a great portfolio.

I partly agree with your post, but in my opinion, going with two 100W lights is a mistake. My nikon SB 800 is rated as around 60 Ws. Sooner or later, you will think you need more power, especially if you go out and try to over-power the sun (for full figure) or try to use anything above F8. I have a couple of AB1600s and couple of Elinchroms BX 500 Ri, and I don't regret buying them. I have had AB1600 for years, and I haven't replaced the tube yet, even though I haven't treated them the best...

Going with the Alien Bees is a good choice.

Best of luck with your new kit sbonk.

and don't think FREE is the last step.
sooner or later clients will ask you to be paid to actually print or use your images, as if they're making you a favour and giving you exposure !
sort of like "emerging" bands playing in pubs and getting paid in beers ... that's our future in a not far away scenario.

Funny you should mention that. I was in an "emerging band" in the seventies. Clubs would 'audition" us by having us play in the club on an open Sunday afternoon to see how many of our followers would show up to buy food and liquor!

Peruse Craigslist just about any day of the week and you will find 'fashion" designers looking for photographers to do free work for exposure only.

Hi All,

I am sorry for letting this slip through without a follow up. I am getting forgetful in my age . My approach to getting into the big Macro agencies is to enter through a back door or what's known as third party agencies and get yourself recognized. If you produce solid work for these third party agencies under the Getty or Corbis umbrella and your sales are good the big dogs are going to notice.
After some time feeding several or only one third party and selling well then that is the best time to make your direct introduction to the big agency with an e-mail. Explain who you are and that you have work on their site through so and so brand and would love to work directly with their agency if possible. If your work is selling they will know and they will invite you to join there agency as well. That is a big part of diversifying.
It is important that you shoot different work for each third party agency so you will have to produce new work but that is a given as you will want to produce your very best, I mean better than what you find on the Third party agency for them to be interested in you. It doesn't take a lot of images but they need to be stelar. Every third party agency has some bad work in their collection but this is not your gage. You want to look at their best work and meet those standards if you want in. The first work is really under the microscope so you must kick some butt on those first submissions.
Once in then you can follow your sales and see how they are stacking up, remember the idea is to build diversification and an entrance into the big agencies so that has to be your focus at first rather than how much you will make. If your work is strong don't worry about the revenue it will start to grow, however in the Macro market it can take longer to get your work up and even longer for the buyers to find it at first so you have to be patient. I give all our work a six month wait before I start to calculate the sales and see if the subject is selling well.
The third party lifestyle agencies I would approach are. Image Source, Blend Images, Superstock, Cultura Images, Tetra and many more. You can go to Getty or Corbis and see a list of all their third party collections by using their advanced search section. That way you can look to see what the third party agencies are offering and see if it is a good fit for your interest and style.
I hope this helps a bit if anyone has any questions please feel welcome to P.M. me or just make a follow up post. I promise not to fall asleep at the wheel again ;)

Good Luck,
Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan
What is your suggestion: Send sample images or link to website (or even link to portfolio in MS Agency)?

But who is it who buys stock? At work today I saw the latest copy of New Scientist in the staff tea room. Opened it and a big ad on the inside of the front cover. I immediatley recognized the three models  in one photo - Cecilie, Sophie and Ask. Not too many blond, blue eyed Scandinavians in India or China.

Good point.
And food is different too.
