Dreamstime.com / Re: Is Dreamstime dying?
« on: April 20, 2010, 21:25 »
Are we still talking about Dreamstime dying?  NO WAY!

Mar 1-20, I averaged $20.60/day on DT... about $.024 per image per day.

Apr 1-20, I've averaged $19.60/day on DT... about $.021 per image per day.

That looks like a dip, but April started with Easter and many people have had spring break for some part of the month.

If this is dying, keep on dying, Dreamstime!

Good for you PowerDroid, I remember the days that I earned as much as you do now.
How big is your port?

@mantonio
I see a slight increase as well but nothing major

People used to go into microstock just for the fun of it.  Did anyone starting the micros in 2005 - 2006 EVER expect to make a living at it?!  I know I sure didn't.

I hoped it would, but I never thought it could.
I thought I would only have enough to by new gear.

228
To be honest Sharply I think you're just adding to and confirming yet another ton of myths about microstock. People love to believe that there are significant other elements to explain their lack of success, rather than just the saleability of their images __ but really there aren't.
If your stuff isn't selling as well as you think it should it is highly unlikely to be because you haven't employed the correct 'strategy' for the particular agency. It'll be because your stuff isn't as good as what is already available to the buyers.

BINGO

Good reply gostwick

I was not soliciting for critique of my images or the scope of things I shoot for microstock or my assignment work.

Well, I am sorry, I am just trying to help!

General Photography Discussion / Re: It's "Tulip Time"
« on: April 13, 2010, 13:15 »
Everybody in this part of Kansas grows tulips for some reason...  In the city of Topeka, it's "Tulip Time" where people can visit various local parks and view the special gardens.

I was out taking photos and video on Sunday and caught the eye of an editor for the local paper.  She asked me if I could email her some of my photos, so I sent her some watermarked thumbnails that night.  She emailed me back yesterday asking if I wouldn't mind letting the paper use a few of my photos if they gave me full credit in the article, so I said "sure" and sent her the 4 they asked for.

Two were in this morning's paper and in addition to them crediting me for the photos, they included the web address of my blog in the byline.

I'm all smiles today... :)

Oh, on an additional note...  I am loving my new Canon EOS T2i.  I have taken some great photos and video with it and although I've only had it for around a month, I've already had stuff submitted for stock sell.

Good luck with that.
Maybe you get some business there, never know.

The OP is a pro. Fully capable of producing the same sort of work if he so wishes.

I am not trying to be rude here and I am not expert either but the WB looks way off on 90% of his images.
Doesn't it or it is just me?!?
Maybe he did that on purpose? (or I have to recalibrate my monitor)

232

...you just need to shoot more of what the buyers need for their projects.

That is good advice!
So you can read their mind?

233
You got that right, it's getting ridicules over there, can see a time coming when many independents will have to ask themselves if it is worth the effort and time for so little exposure

How is it getting 'ridicules over there'? As an independent I've just had my best month at Istock in terms of both downloads and dollars in over 5 years. I think we are some way off from a major crisis and my 'effort and time' has never been more worthwhile.

Personally, I think it is worth the effort (as gostwyck said), for me, March was the one of the best months regarding earnings on IS, so let's hope it continues like this.

234

Stupid on my part, you may say, but from a buyers perspective, too, I would not want IS/Getty to be the only game in town so that the next time I want to buy an image, I have to pay $500 for it. Because that's where I think a monopoly will go. Right now, Thinkstock is affordable because the end goal has not been reached yet. What about if and when Getty's end goal is reached?

Are you sure you are posting it in right forum? ;D

@Phil,
We work for a percentage of their price, so the increase in price helps raise our commissions!

Dreamstime.com / Re: Removing exclusivity
« on: April 10, 2010, 22:01 »

I was really quite happy with exclusivity with DT. If not for this rule, I wouldn't have dropped it. Or if DT had a RM-scheme. But I do not want to sell more pictures of sensitive issues as RF. I have a few already in my port, and it doesn't feel right.

Maybe not my business but...
I don't get this?!?
Uploaded files......232
Total sales...........231
and you are quite happy with this? :-\

Well, welcome gaja, you are going to be very, very happy as independent artist!

Dreamstime.com / Re: Are you disabling old images?
« on: April 10, 2010, 20:06 »
"one-month period" -> the time they give us to opt between disabling, sending to keymaster or giving to the free section.

Is there any quick way to disable images, or I have to do it one by one?

237
Hi everyone,

I don't understand some of you. Yesterday, we were complaining about low commissions and about how agencies are cutting our commissions, but now that IS raised commissions, you are skeptical.  Cheer up guys, at least somebody is doing something good for the contributors. I am not an IS exclusive, but I welcome any raise in commission.
Loop is right, everything has its price. So, please stop complaining and being skeptical about the future.
Personally, I don't think there is a single buyer that can't afford to buy an image on IS. If they can't afford it, they should not be in that business. Period
Everyone makes more money than we do off of our images. So maybe it is about time something changed.

People, I'm in the wrong business. This sounds like we Microstockers are really doing something wrong.

I ask myself this question very often lately.

@ sjlocke
At first I would like to thank sjlocke who first stood up for all of us even if this is not directly affecting him.
Thank you sjlocke!

This is just proof that customers are willing and ready to pay more for our work, it is just agencies between themselves trying to bring prices down to attract new customers. But sadly we are paying for this and agencies don't treat us fairly.
Yes Borg, we need a union, I am all for it.

Subs are the worst thing for RPD...
All my growth projections for a future.... failed.... :'(

What could compel the agency to go to the subscription model? Competition??

Nothing forces them to, but as lisafx said they probably feel less competitive and I guess it brings the agency lots of money.

I have this feeling, a subliminal message, that the answer you're really looking for Kone is 'Yes, Dreamstime is dying'.
But I don't know it to be true.
I don't know the answer to that question.

One thing for sure; I certainly don't want them to be.
There are many things that make Dreamstime special. As an all-rounder, in my books, Dreamstime is the best agency I contribute to.
Not perfect, but the best.
I hope they're alive and kicking, and I hope they stay that way for as long as possible.

Hi Eireann,

I don't wish them to die either. All I want is to find the reasons for my failure. I would like to bring them back to place on my list.
They were profitable for me, and are currently profitable, and I only wish that this continues into the future!

Too many subscriptions constantly are killing RPD... :(
Hi Borg,

Also, DT doesn't allow you to opt out from subs.

Alamy.com / Re: I got first sale on Alamy
« on: March 31, 2010, 16:46 »
Congratulations Goldenangel!  Feels good when you make a large sale there :)

I just had my first $5.00 sale at Alamy, of which I get $2.  It was through one of their distribution partnerships.  I didn't even know you COULD get such small sales on Alamy.  Feels like micro to me...

I have good news and bad news about how low a sale can be.  I had my first sale a few months ago for "Novel Use" giving me a super total of 50 cent!  The good news is last week I had my second sale for $491 with my take at $196.

yes, I am happy.

Question for both of you:

Is your portfolio the same on both Alamy and Microstock, or do you have different images on each?

i've always been skeptic about workshops : why someone would teach you his secrets instead of being in the field shooting
more photos ?

Those who can't do, "teach" (or blog).

So you are saying you are not good photographer?
I know you are. Just joking.

I've found that while certain styles or subject matter sell slightly better on one site over another, by and large a good seller one one site will at worst be a decent seller on another.  (One thing I keep in mind is that many FT buyers tend to be European, so subject matter that is uniquely American may not be big sellers on FT.)

However, overanalysis of this stuff CAN be counterproductive if it's hurting your productivity of new images.  Just generate what you feel are marketable images, upload them to all the sites, and accept that results may vary slightly from site to site.  I'm all for researching the market and against "feed the beast" mentality... but too much overthinking and too little actual creation of new pics won't help you meet your goals.

Thanks for reply.

That is absolutely true, I found that out too, as many others have. But if I knew that before I upload my images, it could help generate money quicker.
Don't worry, I won't go overboard, I am working right now and periodically checking forum.
