iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock New Sub. Model Just Announced!
« on: March 04, 2014, 12:43 »
Well, including the istock exlusive imagery into a sub model seems to be a bad move fom me. The world is already overfed with stock images, if you want something you will get it doesn't matter which agency you work with. But the iStock exlusive imagery had a huge advantage: it was more expensive. Still everyone could afford to buy a licence but meawhile you always knew that you are not buying the cheapest stuff so it is likely that you will not see it again and again everywhere on the internet. Now this last advantage is gone.

IStock is not leading or dictating anymore on this market but trying to catch up with Shutterstock. SS just won another battle this is what I think.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Launches Dollar Photo Club?
« on: February 24, 2014, 18:50 »
It means that just like regular buyers, even if they stop buying at Fotolia, they still have any files they already bought and downloaded.
Some subs sites have clauses that say buyers can't use files in new projects after they stop their subscription payments, but I have no idea how they'd police that.

Yes ok, I got it! That wasn't my point.
My point is, they promise that buyers can redownload bought images forever, anytime. Or am I wrong and they aren't offering this? If they do, how can they keep their offer if the photographer quits and FTL is loosing the right to store the files on their servers?

Discover downloads that NEVER expire - cancel your membership and purchased downloads will STILL be there when you need them, always...

Ok, what happends if I quit Fotolia and delete my portfolio. My images will sill be there for future downloads for those who bought them before? Even if I do not work with Fotolia anymore and do not allow them to have my photos on their website and servers? Where and when did I sign this?

Well, my overall rank at Fotolia is no25 currently so they should have a reason to care.  But I know they don't.

I have 20+k images at FTL. It took me a lot of effort to upload that many images so it is not an easy decision to quit. It never was. They know this. And I am sure they don't care if I quit. But to tell you the truth my imcome is going to be so low on their site that I also don't need to care anymore. Means I can quit just for the fun. :) And it would be a fun!

I never agreed to join Deposit Photos even when they sent personal invitations several times. I did this because of their background (suspicious warez sites).
I was just thinking on to change my mind and join them next time they invite me. I am glad I didn't yet.
Thanks for the very useful post Lars!

Thx for the answers and ideas for everyone.
Upoading too much, punishment of big contributors, bad search algorithm, overall decline?
If you are right guys I don't know what . am I doing at Fotolia still?
I give them a very last chance until the end of 2014.

NitorPhoto when did you reach emerald? And did you raise prices? If so, when?
I am asking cause I suspect there might be a correspondence between raising pricing resulting in fewer downloads and consequently pushing you further in the search.
Of course I may be wrong and hope these are just my dark suspicions.

Niserin,

Yes, I have raised prices and I did it as soon as I was able to. It was many years ago, before they made it 10 times more difficult. I do not remember the exact date but it was much much before the decrease and even before the long increase visible on my graph. I think it was 2008 or 2009.

59
My portfolio has over 24k images at FTL. I am still uploading new images every week but my income is decreasing since years now. While it is not the case with other agencies which are still be able to occasionally reach a BME.
I don't know what is the problem with Fotolia - any idea? My earnings are back to the level of mid 2008. That time I had 2-3k images online while now I have nearly 10 times more.

Anyway, there is a psychological level (a certain amount of monthly income) when my income falls below that I'll stop uploading to FTL for ever. I am very close to this. If the tendecy visible on the attached chart continues I will reach it this year.

Does anyone have an idea why is this?

Yuha is a very good guy indeed, and I am sure Rodeo will pay all the royalties sooner or later. I always liked Rodeo. I few years ago they paid surprisingly nice royalties and I still remember that  so I will not leave them when they have difficulties.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock PP has started for November
« on: December 30, 2013, 06:11 »
This! For me at least October was the (positive) exception from the norm rather than November being the negative one. I think it's quite possible that they'll discover a "glitch in the matrix" or "gremlins in the basement" that screwed up October PP reporting (what with Halloween, and all ;D).

What also could have happened in October was that they did some house cleaning and made a mass payment of PP royalties overdue from previous months for some reason or other. Maybe they had a "Get your credits now, pay six months later"-campaign going at some point...

I completely agree, October was the special one not November. The reason is most likely what Ploink suggested.
I am not a big fan of IS and I am also disappointed that good Ocotber PP sales are not continuing but publicly accusing them with cheating or thieving is very unprofessional and definitely rude.

Strange rejections on ShutterStock are common. When I say strange I mean they are absolutely not right in the rejection reason. It's just part of their system. Reviewers are tired or they just clicked on the wrong button. Happens a lot. Try it again after a few days and it will go through.

Well, you seem lucky since you got an answer from them at least. For me they don't even send a reply for months. I would have been happy to join them but never mind, it's not that important.

Adobe Stock / Re: Is Fotolia dying? Or what happens?
« on: October 17, 2013, 08:25 »
This is not the fist time they are doing this. I still remember when they raised the level limits in their royalty structure. I was one or two months away from the next level and a day after it jumped to 3-4 years away. I still aeven't reached that. With the recent number of downloads it is still 3-4 years away. Nevermind I do not want to reach the next level since it seems it will just drop me back even further in the search results.
Well, what they are doing is logical but very unethical.

It's the same story here. I am emerald with 20k images. I am still uploading more than 200 images every month. Sales droped down to 20% of the BME what happened back in 2010.  I am sure they are not dying but they are dead for me.

General Stock Discussion / Re: September 2013 Microstock Income
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:34 »
For me everything is going down compared to last year or the year before that, I do not have such an elaborate graph but mine would be similar to yours. Except DT and 123RF is stronger for me as IS and FTL is.
The biggest loser in my case is FTL. A few years ago they were my second biggest earner now they are back to the 5th place. My income at FTL is down TO 30% compared to 2010-2011.

Now it works. Both: site upload and DM as well.

« on: September 05, 2013, 07:02 »
Thanks fo the test ShadySue!

I get stuck at the file uploading. What is even more strange is the fact that I can not add photos to my DM library since it is not importing the keywords from IPTC but dropping an error message about the IS connection or something like that.

Anyway, I'll give it a try every day and if it doesn't work who cares - I agree the new files are not selling at all on IS.

Yes, it's true this is why I don't really uploaded images during the last few years. And uploading there is a pain. But now I saw they have a 999/week action so I thought it is a good time to upload some more of my 20k unuploaded images. But it seems I'll not be able to do so.

iStockPhoto.com / Can anyone upload to iStock?
« on: September 05, 2013, 05:25 »
When I try to upload a file via their site I get an error message stats my browser couldn't connect to upload.istockphoto.com.
When I try DeepMeta my keywords are not imported from IPTC since DeepMeta can't reach the IS keyword database.

Does anyone else facing the same problem?

71
Yes, after cheking my earnings this month and making some test searches with top keywords I made my decision. I'll not upload to iStock anymore. The recent changes in best match was a complete disater for me, it already halved my contantly decreasing sales while uploading the new files requires the most effort in the industry. When I checked the current best match results I saw plenty of mediocre or bad images in front only from exclusives and from their so called agency collection. IS doesn't give space for independets anymore so I do not see the point why should I waste my time there? I leave my files online and will check back once or twice a month to pick up my income - but that's the all, good bye.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: messing with the best match yet agian?
« on: September 07, 2011, 04:51 »
Sure they did something. My already pathetic downloads went down to 50%. Seems like old bestsellers are getting priority over newer files.

73
Many of my older images are already placed on TS via the old StockXpert collection
(they make a pathetic income). Sales and revenue at IS are constantly decreasing since 2-3 years now so I very rarely upload any new images there.
My response is simple: I do not change my policy.
1. I leave my port there,
2. But I do not upload new content.
It means they sell my older images while other agencies are selling the new and fresh content. If this is what IS wants I do not mind.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Revised Artists Supply Agreement
« on: August 30, 2011, 13:40 »
I have a vision of iStockPhoto-2020...

1. You create images they sell it.
2. You pay a placement fee of 10$ for every image you submit even if it is not accepted (reviewing fee).
3. They define the price of every image or they can share it for free as a promotion anytime they want.
4. You get 1 cent of royalty per download regardless of the price the image has been sold.
5. You can request a payment when you reach 500$ per month... in every month you do not reach the limit, you lose the money.

Welcome in 2020!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: What's Your Experience With Photos+
« on: July 31, 2011, 18:24 »
Make your priorities, I usually don't upload to the low earnears among the big 4, I just do it when I have to much time on my hands. So you could do the same with IS and not lose any sleep over it....

This is exactly what I do. IS is on the bottom of my uploading list, means I upload if I don't have anything better to do. I have uploaded a very few images since then. Why? They sell much-much less then for me as they did in 2007. And they especially do not sell the new uploads. Why to upload then?
I just realized that photo+ thing - I usually don't even log in to IS anymore just once per months to cash out my earnings. So I give it a try.
