General Stock Discussion / Re: Photostock plus

Another one like this in the UK is Fotolibra.

They say 'membership is free'. But your free membership entitles you to place the grand total of 12 images with them.    :o

Anything more and you have to pay.

Take a look at what they have on offer. I'd guess that very few who pay see any sort of return on their money.

I can't understand why anyone should want to join them ... unless it's because they can't get their images accepted anywhere else.

Wow, I found one of my shots on a billboard over the weekend!  What a hoot!   ;D

Congratulations! That's amazing.

What camera did you use to get an image that size?   :o

mirror weight is soo little comparing to camera weight, so it has no effect (or microscopic) in camera shake. only paranoic people use mirror lockup.

Okay ... thanks for that ... so I'm paranoid.   ;D   I wondered what the matter was.

(And ... just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean you all aren't out to get me.   ;D   ;D  )

Wow! Impressive.

And you can see why mirror lock up is such a useful facility. Look at the way the thing vibrates as the mirror slams up. How many cameras have it these days?

... but, you can't do major crops with 6mp and then upsize it

Don't bother to crop your images, you could be throwing away a sales opportunity. Let the buyers do that if they want to. Give them the space to do it with.

General Stock Discussion / Re: My Disaster with Nikon
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:32 »
I've been using Nikons since 1972 and I've never had problems with any of them. started with a Nikkormat and I'm now using a D3. The Nikkormat still takes photos except the built-in exposure meter is dodgy (they had a strange carbon resistor ring system which wears out). The F801s I got after it works absolutely perfectly and I still use it for film photography.

Any brand, even the best, can throw up dud specimens. Doesn't matter if it's cameras, cars, washing machines, TVs, whatever. No manufacturing process is 100% sure.

Sounds like a significant part of your problem lies in not returning the obviously faulty camera immediately ...

I decided to keep it and deal with the issue. I noticed when I turned the camera off and then on the issue sometimes went away. After a couple months, I finally had some time to send the camera in

Photoshop Discussion / Low frequency/High frequency
« on: September 03, 2008, 05:34 »
I was reading a photo magazine and one of the articles referred  to 'low frequency' and 'high frequency' images.

I thought I was pretty well-versed in photography, but I have no idea what those terms mean.

Can anyone tell me what's the difference between low and high frequency images?

Thanks

General Stock Discussion / Re: 70% don't reach the first payout
« on: September 02, 2008, 09:33 »
That sounds right. It may even be higher that 70% who don't reach the first payout.

I've just done a 'quick and dirty' survey of photographers I have referred to SS.

The average size of their portfolio - all of the ones who have been accepted - is 609 images.

However, if I take out the top 30% (in terms of portfolio size - and the largest portfolio of my referees contains over 5000 images) the average drops to 25 images per portfolio.

You're never going to reach a payout with only 25 images - and remember, that's the average.

Not a statistically accurate sample, I know, but gives an indication.

SS and the others must be laughing all the way to the bank. Although the majority of photographers/artists never reach payout level they still sell an image here and there. And all that money goes to the agency.

It seems to be sorted now. Just a hiccup I guess.

I've just been trying to work on my images with Alamy. Something seems to have gone wrong with their site. I just get a string of error messages.

I know they did some work on the site yesterday (Sunday). Maybe it's connected.

istock has doubled its referral bonus for September, from $10 to $20 per referral.

I wonder why they've done that?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Stock Artists Alliance
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:22 »
I don't know their rules.

I don't think they won't let you join but, as I recall, when they were created there was a lot of discussion in the AlamyPro forum on Yahoo, much of which was anti microstock.

If you do join you may feel a bit like a rabbit in a room full of foxes. (Not a good analogy, I know, but the best I can do at this hour in the morning.)

Anyone here a member of the Stoack Artists Alliance?

Perhaps they have no room for microstock photographers, but they could have some good info info.  They keywords magazine looks interesting.

When last I heard, they were quite strongly anti microstock. I don't know if that has changed.

No you CANNOT sell an image as both Rf and RM. RM means that you know how when and where the image was used. You know nothing about the sale if it is RF.

And there is the possibility of big and expensive legal trouble for you, personally, if some company pays a hefty sum for the rights to one of your licensed images from Alamy and then finds every Tom, Dick and Harry using it Royalty Free.

General Stock Discussion / Economic slump and its effects
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:17 »
In an interview in a UK newspaper this weekend, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) warns that the economic times faced by Britain and the rest of the world "are arguably the worst they've been in 60 years". To deepen the sense of gloom, he adds: "And I think it's going to be more profound and long-lasting than people thought."

How will that affect us? Will sales of images slump too as businesses/publishers/newspapers/magazines cut back on costs?

Or will they remain buoyant as advertisers/editors/etc desperately try to drum up new custom?

One aspect in favour of this 'industry' weathering the storm is its global nature. For example, just this morning I learned that I'd sold an image in South Korea. The global span of stock makes it different to other more localised industries.

Any other ideas?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon solves high-ISO noise problems

Watch out!

Canon's gonna slap a 'cease and desist' order on you if you're not careful.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon nuts ...
« on: August 29, 2008, 09:51 »
So far we've got 57 cameras represented and 44 photographers.

1.29 cameras per photographer. In other words, only about a quarter of us use more than one camera for stock.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Cease and desist from Canon
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:27 »
I can never understand why manufacturers get so uptight about this sort of thing.

I also write and writers are constantly reminded, in magazines for example, that 'kleenex' and 'sellotape' and 'hoover' etc. are brand names and must not be used without permission.

Surely all this sort of stuff gives the company publicity. Even if it is rumours it still keeps Canon in the public eye and that can't be bad, can it?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon nuts ...
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:13 »

Maybe another pole someday with the various camera brands.

I wonder how many people, other than multi-millionaire household name photogs, shoot with two different systems?

When I graduated beyond the Box Brownie and Agfa bellows camera (Remember them? Took 127 film) I bought a Nikkormat. Have been with Nikon ever since, mainly because I can't bear to get rid of all those lenses I've accumulated ... some pretty good, though old. Glass I bought 20 years ago is still going strong on my current camera body.

Software - General / Re: Wich FTP client?
« on: August 28, 2008, 03:23 »
Like others, I was using Smart FTP, but I began to have all sorts of problems with it. Also, as I recall, it began nagging me to buy an upgraded version (I think it was that program).

I switched to Filezilla and never looked back. Yes, it's simple, but that's the beauty of it. Works like a charm, every time.

123
As far as I can see there's no way of telling who the customer base is on each site.

I find that an image that sells brilliantly on one site is somewhere down the list on another. In fact, each agency I submit to has a different one of my images as my best seller.

I've studied them and tried to work out the differences, but I can't make any sense of it.

That's probably a good thing. Spreads the sales, and another reason why it's worth sticking with a range of agencies rather than going exclusive with one.

124
I got booted out of a 'permanent and pensionable' job with no warning whatsoever ('structural adjustment' they called it).

Then I went through a succession of awful, or great but highly insecure jobs (working for the British Diplomatic corps ... vile! Working for a children's publishing company ... great, but very insecure) until I got too old to be of interest to anyone - though not too old to have a brain, experience, skills or want to work.

I decided to try and use some of the thousands of 35mm trannies I'd taken whilst living in Zambia. Sent them to an agency and was accepted. Then I found microstock!

Wish I'd done this earlier - a whole lot earlier. I could really have hit the jackpot whilst in Zambia, and I was only doing it for fun.   ::)

Now I'm beginning to get a reasonable and relatively steady income from doing something I love, and is creative. Ain't never gonna retire.

125
I don't know why, but when I started I used different names for different sites. If I was to start all over again think I'd use the same one now.

I don't believe that buyers 'follow' a particular photographer. They're usually looking for a specific image, and they don't give a tinker's cuss who took it. So long as it fits the bill they'll buy.

However, if they have the choice of 2 or more images they may go for the one by the photographer they know. And making a 'name' for yourself does help in other ways.
