Selling Stock Direct / Re: Boians Self Selling site open.
« on: July 31, 2015, 14:10 »
Hi,
I like your cartoons, they are cute, great for the children's book market.

http://boians.com/Product-Category/character/history-and-symbol/

Price is good.

Your vector work is great and I wish you good luck with the site.

I'd be tempted to put the prices up (maybe double at least).

As Jo says, your biggest difficulty is finding buyers, being visible.
You need to put in lots of work attracting many people to your site.

Good luck!  :)

Smilla Thanks for your nice advice! Have a nice day:)

« on: July 22, 2015, 20:19 »
What is the minimum now?
Wasn't it 1000 vectors before?

Quote
I just give them JPG versions.

Me too, until now. But now they make available a FTP upload for vectors without minimum number of works.
And i wish know if someone have reasonable results with them for thinking about if worth it.

...but, as SandySue told, few artists, on MSG, upload vectors on Alamy....

Hi, congratualions Franzi....

As for prices, I think your prices are okay there...You are selling a royalty free license, so is not like custom work for a client where you set your hourly rates...

....But I saw your illustration style, and I think you would benefit from some tips from a children's book illustrator I know, and I am going to recommend his youtube chanel. Will Terry, he is a pro. https://www.youtube.com/user/willterryart  not only he has illustrated books for some top publishing houses, he  teaches college, has an online school where he teaches children's book illustration classes. Check his youtube video he gives out a lot of advice, look for pricing artwork in his chanel...

Just a quesiton about creativemarket, did it take long for them to accept you there after you send them the request?

I recently got accepted to CM as a seller (yay!), but I am confused about how to set my prices. I am new to the design business, I have done it as a hobby for years but now want to sell professionally.

I agree that a lot of people on CM have ridiculously low prices. But how do you set the prices for your images? Per hour of work? Per perceived value? And how much per hour (or whatever your criteria is) is reasonable? I don't want to underprice my work, but also fear that nobody buys anything if my prices are too high.

And maybe I should ditch the bundles/sets?! Or make them smaller? I just created them cuz everybody does  ???

Here's my profiles: https://creativemarket.com/franzidraws

Thanks for your help!!!  :)

Canva / Re: Canva
« on: July 16, 2015, 14:49 »
Canva layout designer program, I am guessing they didn't select many people to design layouts, telling from the ready made layouts I see in the Canva tool.

The layouts that are in the tool are always the same,I rarely see something new, at least is what I see,  and they are all made by the same designers, and by Canva.  For instance on invitations that are in the portrait orientation I only found 54 layout designs...Is that all they have in that category do you know?  I can't search layouts by keyword, when I try I only see photos....

One thing is safe to say ---- they are veeeeery selective when it comes to these ready made layouts they put out.

They have been putting our more online courses out there teaching how people can make their own layout designs, so that could be affecting sales of the ready made designs as well...

IN the case of the etsy shop, I am going to assume something here, I just don't know if my thinking is correct....

I tend to think that they can do that with a standard license if they are doing a customized design and just showing a design as a comp /example---but is not a regular template that a client download and change it up....They will design and put the client's name and address, and customize like a regular graphic designer in a studio would do....and then they send a flattened design with the client text and name and the client goes and send to a print shop....So in this case, they are selling this as a service rather than a product.

But --- they would be using the same design for different clients...

But if they are selling a "downloadable template" or a greeting card that you sell as a product, then, I guess that would be against the terms...

So there are differences, is quite tricky...Have I assumed correctly?

I found another shop this morning

Selling Stock Direct / Re: New Web Site
« on: July 15, 2015, 17:13 »
wow you got a photography domain...really cool.

134
I just got curious about GS...

Interesting, their Royalty Free license has two short  paragraphs explaining what is allowed and limitations....Well, short compared to the other micros....It seems like a great deal for a buyer in need of extended licenses and don't want to worry about keeping track of print runs, and other things, so on....I couldn't find mention of sensitive uses...or mention about using on Print on demand sites..and such...I wonder if POD use  is allowed....

But from a buyer's perspective, well,  the price for one month membership seems to be lower than an extended in other places...so thats a deal.

I don't know if you have portfolio there and on other sites,  for a contributor, it could mean competing with yourself.

135
So, that means if they didnt sell anything.....Is like using an image as a comp then....

From most (all?) agencies, you'd need an EL for reselling.
However, some agencies seem to allow companies to offer goods for sale then only pay for the EL if there are actually any sales.

136
I dont know what clipart company you had your image with, but if is from  Istock, then if i am not mistaken an extended license is required to be able to sell products with the image on your store.. I'm not sure if Istock preference is that you contact the support first, maybe they can check and see if there is any extended lic. pending?

:) An interesting thing to know - sometimes the artist contacts a shop directly and they just take the image down pretty quick...However, if the design was sold in the past, it will still show in the sold section.

This is the shop:

137
It would be nice if you posted the link to his shop so we all could see if there is something from other artists that we recognize....

I dont know if they would need an extended license to print on shirts, bags for resale...probably so...

You said shop has 1400 right now and 100k sales but that is spreaded out throughout the years since it was opened, and they might have had thousands of other designs/ products in the past...

A cool thing on Etsy is that you can see every single item that was sold in the past......there is a link where you see the list of everything and the day it was sold since the shop opened....

138
Well,

On a second note, sometimes contract templates are not the best thing....

Professionals in the US hire lawyers to draft their contracts and agreements... if you are really serious about this you should think about it, and it might not be as expensive as you think... A lawyer would be able to look at your situation and how you are set up as business and do a template for you. Is a good investment.

139
Are you asking about "work for hire" contracts? This is one of the names used here in the USA...when you hire someone to work for you such as a contractor /photographer and you want to keep the copyrights of the work they produce for you. The best thing would be for you to find a book on contracts for designers or photographers...
Nolo.com has books on contracts and copyrights...also check on amazon....

Photography and design associations and guilds usually have some contract samples, but you will have to do some research.

As for models, usually agencies have a "model release contract", and "property release contracts" as well...

on upload you state that you hold all rights to the images. But you don't need to submit your contracts with people you hire, wether it is assistants, stylist, make up artists etc...

For your own interest you need to have your own work contract, what that should look like and how you make sure you hold all rights, will probably depend on your country.

Maybe your local photography association has contracts you could use?

For the models you need to send in the contract because the model is in the picture.

Hi Stockyme,
In 2015...$20-$70. I think Semmick is spot on with his estimate. The golden years are behind us, because there is too much supply now.

Don't copy other photographers. You can work on the same idea, lets say a dog riding a bike, but as long as the dog, bike, composition, lighting, placement is unique to you and doesn't look like you copied someone else's photo. Companies shut down accounts that copy other contributors...

Why does everyone, newbies mostly think is  a good idea to copy top sellers????? :)  Popular images and keywords get a lot of competition too. And, even if you work on the same idea, still nothing guarantees that is going to get a decent search placement,  and appear on the initial pages...So how good is an image if the buyer won't  see it?

I am using photos & photoshop to design most popular & professional images that are top sellers these days.
Do you mean you are copycatting?  >:(

There is some new on the dashboard....I only see this when I'm logged with the "brand name"...

Do any of you see some templates and button saying "add a new template"
and on top a menu that says "template    brand kit    team members   billing"
here:

https://www.canva.com/brand

144
By the way,
Bigstock also has a shop on Zazzle....or two shops..I dont' remember.
http://www.zazzle.com/boutiquey/

I recently discovered my images being sold as $100 posters on art.com etc - they said they had 'licensed' them from bigstock.  BS says this is ok, as they just sell one print at a time, even though bigstock's licensing specifically says images cannot be resold as prints, posters, etc

Illustration - General / Re: Who buys vector stock?
« on: June 22, 2015, 09:35 »
Current trends are the top sellers....so you don't need to look at design associations... just look at what stock agencies sell..

In microstock in order to make money you need to have thousands of good images...What seems to be sell best or illustration trends are bundles with icons, logos, graphics that can be incorporated in web design, holiday themes, and anything that doesn't compete with photos.

It doesn't really matter if you are cohesive in style when it comes to micro stock...because you have to produce so much artwork, different themes, that you end up with more than one style.

I thought 123RF was a company based in another country...

Logos can not be removed from notecard or greeting card, I just tried on my own...

however they can be easily  removed from some products, like Postcards....

Adobe Stock / Re: Introducing Adobe Stock!
« on: June 16, 2015, 10:02 »

I just hope Adobe fix that page that
shows our Social Securuty numbers....and blur some numbers out just like all other companies do.
Because that is a huuuuuuuuuuuge flaw in their system.

149
On Zazzle they can add their logo and text. just one problem...the Zazzle logo can't be removed...so there will be two logos.

If you don't want to have the POD logo, then the only option is a print shop, or  online printing sites, such as 48hourprint.com, which offer digital and offset printing for larger runs...

I see a royalty description on the supplier agreement..Look in the paragraph - 2.4 Payments

https://www.colourbox.com/supplieragreement

So, what do you think of their plans?

Everything, but where is the royalty plan?
