Hi, I also think you should get a second opinion, if you could find a CPA/ Accountant used to deal with home based business...

there is a great blog by a CPA geared towards indies, musicians, artists and she addresses the home business, hobby x business thing, is quite interesting ....http://junewalkeronline.com/blog/

So, out of curiosity, what state are you in????

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Zazzle request for pay out
« on: March 30, 2015, 21:50 »
and also don't forget ..when you change the payment form ...from paypal to check or vice versa, and maybe even when u change the paypal email..there might be a one months delay to be paid....

but as someone said they send the payment out once a month, I dont' remember the day.

Is not only paypal...

some other payment processors also have to issue the 1099, I just don't know which... for one i know, Etsy has had their own payment system for a while which is called direct checkout...So sellers can accept payments via paypal and also direct checkout...

On Etsy according to their blog post on 2014 through their direct checkout system a person would have to reach both  20K AND 200 transactions to get a 1099.

I dont know if other processors like payoneer would also have to issue, but would be interesting to know.

Hey guys...

I was just checking the top searches...and something caught my eye..

http://submit.shutterstock.com/top100kw.mhtml

I see some weird keyword searches there...and some keywords that don't make sense.... It made me wonder...how do they come up with these keywords???

I though that to be a top 100 keyword it would have to be searched by many people... and there are some keywords that are not generic at all...

180
Same thing here....I haven't....but I also forgot to fill that tax thingy and did too close to the payment date...

I have more than 100 USD of the balance since February and haven't  received my money yet...
Should I worry?

181
Yes that is way too cheap. Even for a minimum hourly wage of a designer.

You have to remember that when you have a client commissioning they always get more demanding than you thought... and you end up investing much more time than if you were just doing something for stock.

It never fails for me...is like they want this and that...it sounds simple, straight forward, but then..things start to change, and you spend more time doing this and that...

50 keywords? Thats'  a lot...
I remember years ago when we were supposed to have less keywords and only relevant to the subject...
I guess now is the opposite

If you do some research you will find the owner profile on linked in...
The owner is a musician....

There are a lot of artists with good intentions, but sadly dont have any idea how complex and full of legalities the stock image business is, not to mention trademark and copyright issues.

Sounds about right
you said Based on a 40 hour work week, youve earned .01 cents US per hour for your
efforts, minus taxes you have to pay the government.

I always save as 8.0, and I save the JPG in the largest size required by an agency, since some agencies require smaller sizes others much larger sizes.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Selling Direct Questions?
« on: March 02, 2015, 20:33 »
As for pricing...
I dont know if anyone uses fotoQuote Pro for rights managed, that could be an option. I'm an illustrator/graphic designer I never used that software, but I have seen this on photo shelter...

Maybe a photographer could chime in...

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Selling Direct Questions?

Pixel,
I think there are a lot of things to consider when selling direct.
One thing is that you will have to keep a website with commerce or use a platform such as Photoshelter. Both  involve money,  you need to promote yourself, SEO etc.  There is also the complex VAT tax if you want to sell to individuals in the European Union, and this one is a whole new issue...

As for licensing, you need to create your own licensing agreement, or get a lawyer to write up, or get one of those books about licensing and look for a template.

How to enforce licenses? That's a tough one. Some companies will enforce licenses, and will make the buyer pay for an extended license....But I don't know how that works...Obviously you would have more control if you are selling direct and if you are selling images under a Rights managed license that gets easier to police I think.

« on: February 25, 2015, 14:51 »
I have a bunch of cartoons,
either vector or JPG, since the 23th I sold 8 of them for 2.00, however I only have 100 images on dreams, cause I never uploaded more there...

But I'm getting the sales for some of the same images..and some show the search term so I dont know where is coming from. Is that from google? how would you know?

189
On Shutterstock you cannot upload that anymore...although I think they did not remove the ones that were uploaded...

there must be a reason why they dont' accept anymore...some risk?

General Stock Discussion / Re: A COPYCAT
« on: February 19, 2015, 14:06 »
I wonder what would the stock image company do in that case...Even if is not considered infringement I take they might not like that...

I found this article by some lawyers that addresses the copycat,  copyright infringement versus plagiarism...

they address this issue Is in the middle of the article look for the title  is "Copyright Infringement versus Plagiarism" ...

bellow is the link.....

http://www.wisbar.org/newspublications/wisconsinlawyer/pages/article.aspx?Volume=84&Issue=6&ArticleID=2098

What do you guys think?

When it comes to clipart vectors, there are things that happen when it comes to similar...when people use the same techniques.

191
Hi
I noticed that there is a lot of these things going on Etsy...

For instance, one thing is people using clipart the wrong way, they may had purchased a license, but are using in a  way that is probably not allowed in the license...or beyond the scope of the license... There's a lot going on....

For anyone who wants to report copyright infringement to Etsy,  Here is the page....

https://www.etsy.com/help/article/482

I think you probably have to make a DMCA notice.

« on: February 17, 2015, 12:01 »
I got one too...
I sent  a few designs a few years back, and I dont remember,  maybe 20 cards. Maybe mine is what I would considerer an inactive account.

I replied that I didn't have any new designs to upload, and to let me know when the account is closed.

I just don't know...I just think they could have worded the email differently...account suspension in the subject makes people jump out of their seat.

If anyone is interested , there is going to be a free live class on Creativelive about protecting copyrihts, licensing etc..is a long class. But after it airs , the class can be purchased to be watched later. On the live class people get to ask questions...Creativelive is a good site, once in a while they have some famous people teaching there, they had Anne Geddes a while ago.

I don't have the link handy , but just go to creativelive.com and in the search box look for "intellectual property".

I am not affiliated with this site or anything, I just like to watch some of their courses.

I think the other person was talking about this shutter talk live workshop about protecting your content...

Hi guys,
Just downloaded my form, and I noticed that the amount was written in the royalties box....Just wondering...because some agencies put in the "non employee compensation" box...

« on: January 25, 2015, 12:06 »
I'm reading this thread, and is making me afraid of opening the form....because this interview is sounding so much more complicated than filling a regular W9 form if you are in the USA????   Is this form a catch all sort of thing for people worldwide??

With a regular W9 form is pretty straight forward...

General - Top Sites / Re: EU VAT Changes from January 2015! ALERT
« on: December 21, 2014, 11:24 »
I know a payment processor that handles Vat and sales taxes on behalf of sellers of digital goods...

I don't know how it could be integrated to sell photos... But is worth checking out.

There is a company named Fastspring, based in California, and they are more popular with software publishers. Just google them.  They handle vat, and sales taxes on behalf of sellers of digital goods and is something they have been doing for a long time.
They say they are  registered with the EU.

Just throwing ideas out there....

General Stock Discussion / Re: Anyone using Payoneer?
« on: December 08, 2014, 11:49 »
I think that when the agency sendt he money, they will send you an email saying you received money and that you should log into my payoneer account....
Usually the email has instructions.

If you changed the payment method on 123 to payoneer, I think now you have to wait for that email....They say you can use that card with any agency that is a partner. I think inside the payoneer account there is a place where there is a list of all partners...

Also Payoneer has a user forum, I just don't remember where the forum is...and you can ask general questions there.

New Sites - General / Re: PIXYLOO Announcement
« on: November 21, 2014, 13:16 »
Hi,

Pixyloo's site is looking good...

Are those photos on the site yours? They are really nice.

I didn't see any "about us" page with the name of the owners or further information.... is nice to know who are the people running a company, what country / state the company is based of.

Good luck with the new site.
