Off Topic / Re: RedBubble tax reciept
« on: April 13, 2016, 20:42 »
Hi,
I dont know if that is true butr I saw comments on another forum from people saying that RB works different from Zazzle. Working with Zazzle, is pretty much like you are an artist  licensing designs on their products, and you get paid royalties, so you are not seen as a "seller" or manufacturer whereas on RB is like you would be paying them for the printing, and people where concerned that this way is like you end up being the seller who just paid a company to print these products. I don't know if that is true but some people where concerned about the tax side of things. So I guess is best to check with RB to see how things work.

So,
Wow, so basically they give you a 1099 with the total amount for the stuff you sold...
So it is like you are the "seller of record", or end seller, not them?

So basically is like you will have to declare the expense as comissions paid.

Do they even handle the VAT, do they pay the VAT?

78
No offense to anyone...

this is just my personal opinion... I am tired of this "how to make money" trend. I bought so much stuff along those lines and was a waste of money....
the internet is full with "how to make money with your camera".

You guys at microstock should see this video..Nobody needs ebooks, just ask this guy LOL  The guy is serious, but this is so hilarious....and is free LOL

Hi,
Jo Ann and EmberMike, I think there is something I read in that W9 email request
about only the U.S. downloads getting taxed and foreigner downloads didn't get taxed
or something like that????
Could that be the reason for the difference?

I received e-mail from them today saying they had an updated 1099 for me in the tax center.

I'm a US citizen living in the US and so there was no 1042-2

Edited to add that support replied. They said that Withholding tax was implemented July 1st 2015 so the 1099 covers only July through Dec 2015. Although the number is still wrong (according to them; I didn't add it up). They say they've notified the relevant departments.

The idea that I've been earning from them the entire tax year and  yet they issue a 1099 for just part because of some internal bureaucracy of theirs seems wrong. But as it doesn't make any difference to my tax return, I'm not going to pursue it further.

Not only in this industry the rug gets pulled...It is happening all over, print on demand sites, marketplaces...there is too  much change happening, and happening too fast...

You can't afford to be happy with what you earn in this industry because the rug is too frequently pulled out from under you. Look at the 500px thing or the fotolia bans. You could be making 6 figures today and close to zero tomorrow.

I came across a chinese site, and saw a lot of the creativemarket cliparts and font bundles being sold there,.

I think is a site where you can open a shop, maybe like ebay, but I dont know if they auctions or just sell direct.

the name of the site is taobao.com

Despite of being in chinese, if you put the word PNG in the search box,
it will turn up loads of those creativemarket bundles, of fonts and watercolor clipart...

I spent sometime looking, sometimes you click on a product, it takes you to the shop owner page, where you find a load more of products.

So, I never heard of creativemarket selling through other sites besides their own..so I guess...is suspicious.

Why did he get a negative rating????

He is right. Shutterstock being on top, and the other sites bellow.

As for illustrators in this forum...
In this forum, there are only a handful of illustrators working professionally as artists and contributing to microstock...

You will find a very small group of photographers doing some vectors on the side, but they don't really make a lot of vectors because their focus is on photography.

I have not found any forum completely dedicated to illustration. Unless...you use the agencie's forums, like Shutterstock seems to be a big one.

They are not very far from the list on the right, except obviously vectorstock will jump up the rank

Did you guys know that if you try to uninstall and install Adobe software from the time we bought boxed versions and upbgrades too many times without deregistering first, it might stop working and you have to contact adobe to unlock? I dont remember if is six times or more.

In any case i had been buying upgrades ever since CS3, I had the boxed version...And I noticed that I only have left maybe one install...
I never knew about deregistering, and many hard disk crashes didn't let me do it when I had found out about it...

So basically, when you try to launch it gives a message ...sometimes You have to contact adobe to help unlock.

I dont think this is a problem with the Cloud these days.

I didn't receive any email about payment...

123RF / Re: free images
« on: March 19, 2016, 23:33 »
When you offer free images, in a microstock site I think you are attracting people looking for freebies or image collectors, the ones who just collect images thinking someday they might be able to use. So that's probably why nobody is buying the large version.

Those customers hunting for specific images are willing to pay.

It is incorrect to say that anything that is old is in the public domain.

First define old. My grandma is very old, and she is not in the public domain.

Here is a link for a Cornell University page where they have more information on how old it has to be and other implications.
http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm

As for trademark issues,  not only logos, but names, slogans and also characters. Thinking of characters, for instance the trademarked Peter Rabit characters of Beatrix Potter books, you can read something interesting about it here:
http://blog.librarylaw.com/librarylaw/2006/03/the_tale_of_one.html

So, you are off better by doing your own research than asking this in a forum.

Anything that old is in the public domain, at least in America. You could still face trademark issues, but that would only be on logos.

Canva / Re: Canva Now Working on Vectors
« on: March 04, 2016, 18:53 »
I got an email too...
It is going to take more time, but at least is a good thing to know that is coming...I guess probably at the end of the year well get our vectors processed.

I found the reason why I got two forms...

according to them this is what happened:
I missed the july deadline to fill out the W form,  I filled that form later.
 That's their explanation.

My guess is... I got the foreign form 1042 because  I made almost 3 dolars during the time I forgot to fill the form, so  0.80 cents got computed, witholded and reported in that form, so I think that's the 30% withelding....Interesting that form has their USA and Hong Kong office addresses.  My 1099 was for somethign around 2 dollars, I'm guessing that's what I made after I filled the form.

New Sites - General / Re: 123stock.co.uk
« on: March 02, 2016, 18:08 »
When you talk to your designers, also tell them to improve the design so it doesn't look amateurish.
That title or logo "123 stock" with that embossed Photoshop effect from the 80's is just looking cheap, and the slogan font is way to thin, not very readable with that flower background.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Thanks for the input, I've messaged the team and they're cracking on with it now.
Many thanks!!

Hi guys....
I sent a W-9 as i live IN America...
I was waiting for the 1099 misc for tax by mail, but I looked into the account and it was there for printing...

This 1099-misc is okay, it comes from Chicago. I only made 1.44 royalties it says.

but then I look and there is a second form, wich is a 1042-S, and this 123RF has an address from Chicago, and also an address from Hong Kong...I never got a 1042 from an agency...Can anyone explain to me what is this????

Have you got one too????

Dumc, do you have images with more downloads that are not showing in the first page along with that one? For example, an image with much more downloads but is on the second, third pages...

...and just had a sale of that photo....

General Stock Discussion / Re: Vector free in My Pictures
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:02 »
HI Stockeiro,
"Nao".
What is your country?
I don't know if you speak spanish or portuguese. I can explain in portuguese. Just post all your questions.  It can be very complex because of copyright laws.

When we are accepted into Shutterstock, they makes us read the "photographer training manual" where they explain all of this.  You can also read the Artist contract, I think it explains what you can and cannot do.

Please post a link to your portfolio this way we can give you better advice.

Answering - Most free vectors, are still in copyright to the owner. Also keep in mind that a loooot of free stuff which is stolen and posted by hackers....

The only thing you can use are public domain images the ones , the ones created before 1920...but not all agencies accept that, because they already have a lot of it. Some still accept.
Most of these public domain images come from antiquarian books, posters, postcards, photos from before 1920, most which fell into public domain; however if you were to use some of those images, you need to scan directly from the old books that you buy.

If I find a free vector, I can use it to supplement my design and resell in microstock?

94
No successful microstock person come here and say, hey check my portfolio, I'm making a load of money...Ninguem.....And, you can not tell how much money a person makes just by looking at their portfolio.

By the way this industry is extremely competitive...and there are more people struggling, making little money than people making a lot of money.

Now if you earn $5 per month with 75 images, you could do that math, as to how many photos do you need to make $500 or a thousand dollars....  That is the best way to figure out how much money you could be making.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Agency 1099's
« on: February 03, 2016, 11:52 »
I think you still can print out, just look for the word "tax" in the menu and it will probably be there.

96
Guys,

I haven't received any payment this year, I didn't reach the payout probably.

Are our contracts already under a Chinese agreement or under Getty? I don't understand.

The email says "As part of this transaction, your existing Corbis agreements have transferred to VCG, however in practical terms nothing changes for the time being.

Canva / Any Updates on Canva, how are you doing, vectors etc?
« on: January 18, 2016, 13:51 »
Hi,
I see there isn't much being said about Canva compared to other agencies lately.

How are your uploads of cut out PNG files being accepted compared to full background images - fast or slow approvals...are they accepting vector uploads yet, or still pending?

Is anyone here contributing "layout" designs, how is that going for you?

98
Model releases are needed for commercial work.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Selling non-exlusive resale right
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:01 »
they want in sets of 50?  Are you asking a price for each set, or for each image in the set....

Did you approach  them, or they approached you?

Illustration - General / Re: RETRO FEEL
« on: January 05, 2016, 14:13 »
Is like what everybody said....

For a realistic texture the best is to have the texture in black and white bitmap and use it with adobe illustrator, I know some people in silk screen who use this method when they photograph a physical object for the texture - because you are able to get all the details - however that will not be accepted into microstock... so you would have to vectorize.

Like everybody said people do "expand" fill so the TIF or JPG  and that will become a vector, and the only downsize is that you will lose some detail in the process.

You will have to play with the settings of the live tracing feature  to see how much of the detail you are willing to lose - because if you get a lot of detail, that's a lot of anchor points and ---that make files pretty big,  in some cases that will slow down some computers...I did that once to get a realistic texture, and it was too slow to work with it.
