Pond5 / Did Anybody Get Paid Twice?
« on: February 15, 2017, 10:11 »
I was wondering if anybody got a double payment from Pond5. While I appreciate getting 100% royalties, it doesn't seem very fair. Just wondering if it was a widespread glitch or an isolated incident.

Dreamstime.com / We have to confirm payout requests now

When I went to request a payout this month, I noticed it said I needed to confirm my last month's payout request. When did all this happen?

General Stock Discussion / Raises: What Should We Ask For?
« on: July 12, 2014, 15:43 »
We talk a lot on this site about money, royalty rates, raises and more money. That said, we don't always have a clear vision of what those raises or royalty rates should be. If we are going to ask for a raise, shouldn't we have a clear vision of what we want and what we can realistically get? So, I thought I'd take a look at it and try to start a conversation. Warning: There will be MATH!

Let's say you make $1500 a month from agencies that pay you on average 30% (you probably wouldn't include agencies that already pay you 50%). I know these aren't necessarily your numbers, but they are fairly round numbers to work with. So with those numbers, that means the agencies get $3500 and you get $1500 for a total of $5000 in sales a month.

It also means that for every extra percentage point you get, it's an extra $50 a month. So at 31%, you make $1550. At 35%, you make $250 more a month (or $1750 total). Not bad. What about subs? If you get 30% of the sub price paid as well, then that is about 1 cent for every percentage point increase. (It was about $.008 for 25 cent subs and $.0125 for 38 cent subs. 1 cent seemed like a good average). I know subs aren't a firm percentage, but SS seems to average out to something similar.

OK, so there are the basic numbers. The bare minimum raise would be 1 percentage point and a 1 cent raise on subs that results in $50 extra a month (from the example). The maximum would probably be getting 50% royalty which would be a $1000 more a month with subs that cost 20 cents more (again, from the example). That last one sounds awesome, but I might have better luck getting them to throw a free unicorn in.

With all that said, what do you think is fair and realistic to ask for?

I got a couple 0.15 royalties this month. Am I going to have to drop another site?  :(

Selling Stock Direct / MyStockVectors Has 20,000 Images
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:15 »
This is just a self-congratulatory thread, but I'm happy that I hit my image goal for the year. 20,000 images! Woo hoo!

Alright, my shameless promotion has ended (for now).

Illustration - General / Copyright Violation
« on: April 03, 2013, 12:50 »
I recently was informed one of my illustrations was being resold on this site:

http://sunshinedaze.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=29_267&zenid=onpa3sk58i5q5uojq5m5bqctl2

It's been removed, but others may want to take a look for their work or others' work that they recognize.

General Stock Discussion / 3 sites you should NOT support
« on: March 27, 2013, 10:04 »
Since Borg posted a Poll about which agencies to promote, I thought it would be a fun thought experiment to see which agencies people thought we shouldn't support or contribute to and see if there is an overlap.

So, have fun voting for the worst or the one that did you wrong!

General - Top Sites / $0.25 versus $0.38
« on: February 16, 2013, 13:42 »
I've seen the argument a lot about not wanting to undercut SS with lower paying sub sites, but how much money are we actually talking about?

If you sell at the vaunted top level at BigStock, 50K a year, you'd make $19K a year at $.38. That same number of sales at $.25 is $12500. So, it is a difference of $6500 a year or a little over $500 a month. It's a nice chunk of change that all of us would definitely like, but it's not necessarily life changing.

Of course, most of us don't have 50K sub sales a year. If you sell 2000 images a month, it's $260 a month. 1000 images, it's half that at $130 a month. And so on.

That's not really a huge difference unless you have huge sales volumes, so why are we quibbling over pennies (literally)? It seems like attacking the small, extra small and web sizes would be a much more profitable complaint area. These sizes are really undercutting your profits.

Selling Stock Direct / I Hit My Goal for the Year
« on: September 29, 2012, 18:35 »
At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to double my portfolio from a little over 4000 images to 8000 images. Today, I uploaded my 8000th image at MyStockVectors.com, so I achieved that goal.  Release the balloons and queue the parade music.

Sorry if this is too much of a pimping topic. It took a lot of work and planning to achieve this, so I just wanted to share it.

123RF / Another One Bites the Dust
« on: August 03, 2012, 14:22 »
In my on going attempt to move my stock image business to greener pastures, I deleted all my images at 123RF today. You can call me crazy or stupid, but it seemed like the right move to make. 123RF has an extremely low RPD, and sales have been picking up there.

I see them appear in a lot of searches, and I was worried that they were stealing away the walk in traffic to better paying sites. I'm sure it will cause a short term hit to my sales, but I'm hoping it was the best move for the long term picture.

This is the second request I've had for an interview with Shutterstock. This one seems contributor related. The other one was with the Morgan Stanley people. I was wondering if other people were getting these requests or are they just picking me because I'm grouchy and opinionated?  ;D

Dreamstime.com / $.30 sub sales?
« on: June 24, 2012, 11:38 »
I normally don't monitor this very carefully, but I noticed I had a couple subs sales that I got $.30 for. I thought the minimum was $.35. Has this happened to anybody else?

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Adobe Creative Cloud
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:53 »
I guess I'll have to do more research, but this is starting to look like the best deal.

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud.html

I was looking at the upgrade prices from CS4 (which I'm running now), and they look fairly expensive. I'm not sure what the special offer they allude to is though.

Paypal / Got my 1099-K From Paypal
« on: April 06, 2012, 16:30 »
I got my 1099-K from Paypal today. Fortunately, I already filed my taxes, but what a nonsensical waste of paper. Thanks government for sending me an extra 1099 that reports income I already have on other 1099s. Maybe, my bank should send me a 1099 too. That way I have everything triple reported and can try to untangle it come tax time. Complete nonsense.

Illustration - General / Good Mouse?
« on: October 25, 2011, 14:22 »
Does anyone have a mouse they really like? Not the little furry kind, but a computer mouse. My new iMac came with a Magic Mouse. I really like it (especially the multi-touch stuff), but it eats batteries, so I probably should replace it with something corded.

New Sites - General / iRockStock?
« on: October 12, 2011, 09:54 »
I saw the ad on this site, so I clicked on it (because that's how I roll). Anyway, I was confused because it looks like iStock, but obviously it isn't. What's the story?

iStockPhoto.com / What would it take?
« on: August 18, 2011, 15:50 »
Since iStock started sending out their survey today, I was curious what it would take to make you happy with iStock again. By happy, I'm referring to money (more precisely royalty percentages).

General Photography Discussion / Focus? Hocus Pocus!
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:50 »
I read this article about a camera start up:

Was also playing around on their website adjusting the focus:

Veer / Sell 20 files for the price of 1
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:46 »
I wasn't sure if it was going to be a good thing when Veer switched from selling just vector versions to a variety of sizes. Well, the answer is starting to become clear. It's a bad thing. Now, instead of having large credit sales trickle in, it is all extra small sizes. It's frustrating and it feels like my sales are being cannibalized. Veer has gone from an agency I was excited about to just another low RPD agency. Oh well there's other places to focus on.  :(

General Stock Discussion / How Important is Price?
« on: March 15, 2011, 00:33 »
I've been wondering this question for a while, so I figured I'd ask the mob. How much micro is too much micro? Should things cost a buck? 5 bucks? More?

iStock has always been one of my better agencies, but I've done better as they've raised prices. Shutterstock does well and is less expensive with subs, but they also seem to have more and more on demand. Not to mention that they have more EL's than all the agencies combined. I also have some midstock agencies that sell well at higher prices.

It just makes me wonder if the lower prices are even necessary, and what is the ideal price where volume meets revenue.
