Mr. West clearly connects Alamy's rising total revenue to the 2010 "investment" based on cutting contributor royalties, but there could be many other reasons for that growth. I didn't hear much in the way of specifics on the future investment or on how cuts in future royalties on future sales really helps if you have a project in the here and now you want money for.
Yeah, there were a lot of changes. They started selling vectors and the upload process is leaps and bounds better. If I was going to guess, I'd think that their catalog grew significantly being a big reason for growth. I too was curious what the plan for growth was other than keeping more of the revenue. Not that they owe us an explanation for their plans, but why bother with a not very well thought out explanation at all?

While it would obviously be better if there wasn't a cut they are really no worse than the rest of the industry. Which successful agency pays 50%?
Whose success are we talking about? I suppose the same ones that used to pay 50%, but lowered their commissions were. They all talk a good game, but they are usually just as successful at 50% as they are at 40% or less from the contributors perspective. I'm sure they make more on the deal, but it doesn't elevate our individual earnings.

They're crazy! Then I will just delete my account with them. Too bad about the work, have uploaded in the years about 10000 pictures. ... Well well, then I don't sell any more there either.
Greedy Alamy - byebye
Where will you be sellling which is less greedy?
Wish AS would start editorial, they're fair and they'd probably have volume also.
They're fair? What's their commission rate? Is it more than 40%?
33% as a start, or up to 46% depending on your former FT rank. Also, they've introduced minimum royalties for subs starting at 0.33 USD. It's not amazing, but it feels like it's going in our direction for a change.
Not sure how long you've been at Fotolia. They have a pretty bad history with contributors. The Adobe purchase definitely helped with their poor reputation.

They make a super long video of drivel, who will actually watch this?? This is totally unacceptable. They give students 100% commissions so we are now paying for them. They do charity, we pay. Sure charity is lovely but don't do it at our expense. Who would do charity for abused photographers?? I am really sick with this. Does anyone know email for James West?
He gave his email at the end of the video.

Kind of a rambling explanation of hopefully this works again.

It's not a horrible strategy. They should have accepted stuff like this from the beginning, but made entry as a contributor stricter. The theory that if you accept a contributor, then you should be happy with the majority of their work. Might have made everybody happier too.

I have to sit down at some point and figure out the changes to the gradients. The little I used it in CC 2019, it seems like they redesigned it specifically to frustrate me.

I suppose with a lot of posters being anonymous it took some of the luster off of celebrating BMEs too.

seven year old post and we are making less now!
If it makes you feel better I'm making more this year at IS than I did in 2011, but I'd quit the site so it is a low bar.

I don't think that was ever officially stated (BICBW), but certainly for photos, that's how it has seemed for a while. However, they seem to be more picky for illustrations.
They don't seem too picky anymore there either. Not that I'm testing it with a lot of garbage. I just assumed the floodgates were open everywhere. In hindsight, maybe upload limits and stricter rejections weren't too bad.

...you want to attract serious contributors
...why anyone would buy from you versus Shutterstock or Adobe Stock.
Those are the real questions. They are hard ones to answers too. We all want better agencies, but the new choices we are given aren't exactly inspiring a revolution.

I don't know why people dislike iStock so much, it sells.

I suppose sales are relative. It used to be nice to reliably make 4 to 5 times more a month.

There are some photos of us for free (with with the consent of the owner) but the purpose is to stimulate growth when the site is still new. Thanks for your explanation, I can more understand our group.
You won't grow or attract paying customers with free images. Microstock is already really inexpensive, so eliminating paying altogether just means you are losing money. When I ran my own site, people mostly came in and bought what they needed and left. Discounts didn't tend to drive people back to the site because they had limited needs.

Weird. I always found everything hard to find on Fotolia, so Adobe seems like a pretty big improvement from that standpoint.

Probably going to regret stopping by here, but here goes.
In my lifetime, Democrats have never lost an election. ever. Either they win, in which case, there is apparently no shenanigans or cheating, or they was some variation of cheating or other scandal. But lost? Never happened.
I'm pretty liberal, and I can't even agree with that. There are definitely a lot of shenanigans with voter suppression and gerrymandering, but people still vote the way they vote.

Honestly, the majority of those White House reporters asked very similar or the same questions. That's how it works though. There are about a half dozen or less pressing questions and they ask them. It is sometimes with different angles on the issues, but nobody is really doing anything special or controversial. Pretty much every news network had their highlight reel from the press conference of the president yelling at them. Seems pretty fair and balanced.

You mean people with no address or ID should be able to vote? How do you register to vote where you are? No ID and no address required. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed a lower court ruling that essentially protects the address requirement.
If you live on a reservation that doesn't necessarily have street addresses, then registering to vote and a PO Box to mail your ballot to should work just fine. You don't need a picture ID to vote (especially since you really shouldn't even have to vote in person). All-Mail elections seem like a much simpler way to go. No hacking and no maintenance to garbage polling machines.

Not a fan of Trump and absolutely NOT Hillary but if I was american I would vote Republican! the leftie/libs are as dizzy as a bunch of junkies!
LOL. Are you sure you aren't American? That sounds like how we vote.

Voter suppression continues, I see.
You believe the lies
Voter suppression laws are very real and very observable. It's hard to tell how much they affect the outcome of any election, but there are definitely targeted laws that affect specific groups of voters.

Actually boycotting did work extremely well with the Dollar Photo Club
iStock never really recovered or regained its glory after people left either. None of it is a death sentence, but it seems like there are impacts and repercussions.
I'm not sure that the boycott had any direct effect on iS. Getty did a brilliant hatchet job on them, without help from contributors, by ignoring all concerns.
Yeah, hard to tell. They pretty much pressed all the buttons at once. I guess it is a miracle the whole site didn't explode.

Seems worth it as long as the image doesn't have a lot of conflicts with other images in your portfolio. Like others said though, it is really up to the individual to determine what their images are worth.

I find the average month or day is much more depressing now than my highest high or lowest low.
