General - Stock Video / A Photo Editor's Post on Shooting Footage
« on: December 16, 2010, 11:50 »
Rob Galbrath (I think that's his name - the "A Photo Editor" guy) had an interesting post yesterday about footage.   This is kinda like comparing my neighbor's Porsche to my Cavalier as it relates to microstock footage, but it reinforces the fact that entering into video right now is really the Wild Wild West when it comes to pricing and expectations.   Just remember that they are speaking about commercial assignments and huge day rates - their clients are all beginning to expect footage for ipads, etc.

I thought I would post it on MSG because we are beginning to speak about footage quite a bit.  I also wonder if we are off to a fair start with the prices that agencies are charging for footage and clips - or is it extremely undervalued right now like photos were in the beginning (and still are).

Off Topic / Off Topic: Custom Video from Santa)
« on: December 06, 2010, 13:49 »
This website will make a very special video e-mail from Santa for your kiddies, my daughter watches it over and over and over.  You need the name, photo, postal code and they personalize it very nicely.

I haven't made an grown-up video yet this year, but I made a couple last year and they were pretty funny.

The tab at the top is gone when I sign in - I think it was "Sell Photos"  I can't see my port, my pending files or my balance and can't upload either.  Is it just me?

"We make killer videos from your images automatially".

Since I don't shoot video this is as close as I may ever get!  I tried Animoto a couple years ago but forgot about it.  Last night I uploaded some sneak peek shots for a dance school and I think the slideshow/video making could be a little addictive.  Takes a while to render though.   You can make free videos, but oh boy they are short!

Has anyone tried a pro account, is the resolution better?  Kindof pricey for a pro account unles you use it a few times a month.

I resisted the urge to fiddle with this other than breaking up some shots that were similar Rising Star Video.  I remember fiddling right through the night and morning making that soccer video, the rendering process makes you wait quite a long time - one little change and the whole thing has to render again.   It does some wierd things to the photos too - well, that resolution for one!  and it crops randomly and and vignettes and radial gradient-like lines that are pretty out-of-place against the setup.

There's a referral code in the link.  I can't remember what you get for it, costs $3 to make a single video so it can't be much! :o   http://animoto.com/?ref=qventogf

Nikon / A New Nikon Hitler Video!
« on: October 14, 2010, 11:08 »
Maybe not as funny as the D3X video, but that Hitler guy is pretty emotional about his photography.

No one on MSG is talking about the D7000?

Photoshop Discussion / Layer Mask Question CS3
« on: October 05, 2010, 13:21 »
I can't figure out in Photoshop and anything beyond basic masking is driving me crazy....

How do I convert an image to a layer mask?

I have a black and white layer.  In Paintshop I can go "new mask layer from image"  and convert this layer to a mask.  It doesn't have to be b&w/greyscale in paintshop - works with photographs too.

1.  How do I turn it into a mask in Photoshop and apply it to a layer?

2.  I also have trouble working with masks.  If I have made a mask on one layer, how do I copy it and apply same mask to a different layer?

This will likely sound pretty basic to most of you.  I've searched answers many times - I must be phrasing the question the wrong way because search results are always basic masking techniques.

Did I make any sense?  LOL, Photoshop isn't my first "language", but I'm trying to make all my new templates in it exclusively... it's just not as natural to me as in Corel.

Thanks in advance!

General Photography Discussion / Eyesight!!!
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:33 »
I spent many weeks in bed this winter.  When I got home from a week in the hospital I had a hard time seeing my computer screen and more-so I could could no longer read in bed.  Scared the crap out of me.  Finally I realized that it was worse when I was wearing contacts, and if I took off my glasses I could read just fine.  Very suddenly my closeup vision was really really bad.  Distance is pretty normal.  Doctor swears it is not related, it's just my age.  According to the Internet (because everything you read on the Internet is true ;)) you can suddenly need reading glasses.  It seems to have stabilized, but - yes, I need to see my optometrist.  I've now become that old lady peering over the tops of her glasses.

What happens to the "working" eyes now?  I don't do a lot of closeup work (thank god!), but obviously focusing a macro is going to be a challenge.

I see my eye doctor shortly, but I'd like to be prepared if I can.  I never wear glasses when I'm shooting. always contacts.  There is a "progressive" contact lens that you can get (think bifocal).  Does anyone here use progressive lenses?  It seems that sometimes you are prescribed one lens with and one lens without and your brain retrains itself to dominate on one side.  Would I get my "shooting eye" in progressive, OR would I get a diopler?  That's the term isn't it for the focusing attachment for the eye piece on the camera body?  Can you just walk into a camera store and "try them on" or do you have to order one with a prescription?

On the other hand... do progressive lenses interfere with regular shooting?

Anyone been through this?  Supposedly noone can escape needing reading glasses I just never thought it would happen to me.  I just have to admit that I'm turning into an old lady.  What's next? A hip replacement?  I better not need one before my kids are into braces  :D.

Thanks, Lorraine

Off Topic / Terry Fox
« on: September 01, 2010, 19:22 »
Have you heard of Terry Fox in your Country?  It was 30 years ago today that his "Marathon of Hope" across Canada was cut short near Thunder Bay, Ontario. I was in school, and we talked about him throughout his run - then we all know the end of the story  :'(  He had run 26 miles per day with one leg, hoping to raise a Million dollars for cancer research.  30 years later, more than 400 million dollars have been raised in his name.   (He had osteo sarcoma, a type of cancer that today still has a dismal survival rate.)

It goes to show that none of us should ever think we are too small to make a difference.

Microstock News / The Most Dangerous Thing Invented
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:52 »
Has anyone read the John Cougar Mellancamp stories this week?

"I think the Internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb," he said. "It's destroyed the music business. It's going to destroy the movie business."

It immediately made me think of all our micromacro discussions.

http://ca.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idCATRE67H0SN20100818?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0&sp=true

When you think about it, the Internet really has "destroyed" a lot of businesses - but on the other hand it sure has created a lot too.  Hmm... what's the word I'm looking for.... evolution?

Shutterstock.com / Sudden Sales?
« on: July 27, 2010, 11:04 »
Strange thing, one of my old photos is selling pretty well for a couple weeks.  I checked to see if it is featured on the front page - nope.  I had a freebie of the week end June, but it didn't bump the sales of this particular photo during that period.

I just wonder - can it be featured somewhere other than on their main page?  How can it be getting all this attention?  Or has some search change returned decent sellers to the front?  I'm not sure if it's a great seller, but it's had over 700 sales on SS and I think it sold virtually every day for the first year.  Funny, it sold for $31 on FT this week too and a couple little sales on other sites.  My best earner this month is such an oldie.

It also goes to remind me that if you capture a nature/animal/wildlife photo that "sticks" it is timeless and can sell very well for a long time.  It's getting them to stick and not die that is the tricky part :)

Off Topic / Sinkhole Photos
« on: June 01, 2010, 14:57 »
Was I shocked to see the Guatamalan sinkhole photos from yesterday.  This thing is 330 feet deep, they make it look double the height of the statue of liberty!  Thankfully it was at an intersection, a house fell in and 2 boys were killed - a third person as well I believe.

Just had a 200 credit sale on Istock, it's the most I've earned for one micro sale - $52.  Wonder what that would be if I was exclusive.

I know, I promised I would NEVER say woohoo but I couldn't help myself.

I wouldn't normally post this but I am so frustrated with MostPhotos.  It does not work here for me.  I never did upload much because it is excruciatingly slow.  It is so slow in fact that it just took 20 minutes to see if I sold anything in April.  Then spent over an hour waiting for pages to load as I tried to find info about how to remove the few photos that I have up there and I have just lost the last of my patience.  The speed is obviously NEVER going to improve - it's been what 2 years - I think it just must be my location (Central Canada) because I've never heard anyone else complain.  Can anyone who has a normal connection with this site please tell me what to do, is there a direct link to a page that I can delete everything or is there an e-mail address that I can send them a request?  No sense having a couple dozen photos on a site that is impossible for me to grow or maintain.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Shutterstock.com / Editorial Question
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:45 »
An editorial photograph was recently removed "per Legal".

We have removed the following images that you uploaded.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride (15312817) deleted because: Quality
Control - Deleted per Legal, "RCMP" is protected.

Does that mean the word RCMP is protected?  Can't we use words like RCMP and IPOD etc. in editorial labels and keywords?

Once again I am confused about what editorial really means.  Certainly their uniform would be copyrighted, and they have likely protected their name, but you see photos of the musical ride in the paper every time they perform.  I know the army is pretty fussy about what photos are allowed, but this photo does not jeopordize national security in any way, it was at a public event and the tickets did not have restrictions on photographs.

Do you think they deleted correctly, or did they perhaps delete not realizing it was editorial?

General Stock Discussion / PhotoXpress? Aren't they Fotolia?
« on: March 26, 2010, 19:07 »
Can anyone tell me, wasn't PhotoXpress the freebie site with Fotolia's rejects?  They are advertising like crazy now, and are charging for a few things too.  $9.99/month is almost free, but I would be super pissed if they were making anything off my freebie donations.  (Not that I donated anything).

I had an EL sale at Istock on the 7th.  I received $1.14 for it.  When I click through, it states that the customer paid 100 credits.  Am I reading something wrong?  A couple days before that I received $38 for a different EL at Istock, it was more credits but still less than 150 credits I think.

$1.14 cannot be right for a 100 credit purchase, can it?   Please tell me there is some kind of mistake and we are not being screwed by some fine print.

I can't sign into Bigstock today in both Firefox and IE.  I don't get a message, just back to a blank sign-in box.  Is it just me?

I notice that I had an auto Windows update last night, maybe has something to do with it?

123RF / 123 / Inmagine?
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:54 »
Okay, first I haven't been able to get onto microstockgroup in quite a while - finally here I am - I tried to find a post for this subject and I don't think there is one.

When I went to log onto 123 this morning I was directed straight to Inmagine.com.  Has 123 gone bust?  I don't think I see any of my photos on Inmagine but I didn't look too hard.

Shutterstock.com / Any SS EL's today?
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:58 »
Wondering if there is some kind of catch-up going on at SS.  Has anyone else had a lot of el's today?  I had 3 that are not related whatsoever.  Gotta say, pretty nice to see the $84 in my account on a Monday morning.

I've had a lot of 5 cent backup this month too, and they were becoming quite uncommon.

Off Topic / Logos? Istock Collection?
« on: December 23, 2009, 13:31 »
I was looking for the Istock logo collection - did that project never launch?

Great timing, a friend opened a new massage clinic this weekend and has no signage or logo... 2 days before Christmas she is looking for something!  I am not a vector artist - and thought there maybe something on Istock -but I can't find the logo section.  Anyone know if it exists or was just talked about?

There was another site that has logos you can outright buy, anyone remember the name?  Maybe graphic leftovers... I'll look for them in the meantime.

Off topic here, but this is really clever and very nicely filmed.  If you want to send a Santa video to a kid in Canada here is a link:
http://santa.sympatico.ca/home/

You can even do a "made the naughty list" video for someone a bit older who has no hope of Santa coming this year.

For curious non-canadians - my postal code is R2E 0G3, you will need to enter a postal code if you want to see the video.

I have not received my funds yet, have you?  I wonder if they plan to send them in the middle of November.
