LuckyOliver.com / Shameless Self Promotion - LO Contest
« on: February 20, 2007, 12:42 »
I really feel like I have a touch of stardust these days.  A couple weeks ago I was celebrating having an EL sale and finally realizing some modest but consistent sales from a model released shoot...

I entered some pictures in the Lucky Oliver Turn Down that Noise contest and they liked my "Little Boy Gots da Blues"
http://www.luckyoliver.com/blog/show/182

There were only 130 or 140 sumbissions including a dozen or so from myself, but I just can't believe how good the recognition feels!  I hope it's okay to share with my MSG friends?

I'm not usually very big on entering contests, but I'm glad I tried this time.  I set up this shot just for the contest, and I liked the winning photo of my son so much I had already printed up a large print (of a slightly photoshopped version).

Now that I feel so inspired I better get busy!

Dreamstime.com / I am astounded!
« on: February 05, 2007, 09:57 »
I have to share this I'm so excited!   Here I am at my desk... it was a record breaking -53C  with the windchill last night and I have to check if the school busses are running... of course not!  On Saturday we went to hockey and the power steering hoze snapped it was so cold.... (Global warming?   Hardly feels that way).  This time of year is tough in Canada!

I'm here to check the school board - but I can't resist checking stats.  My portfolio is pretty meager, mostly agriculture and nature shots.  Everyone always discusses earnings and I clock in at about $10 per month (pathetic I know, but I still click my heels every time I get a sale).  I was expecting my first payout shortly...

Over Christmas I model released family and went to the school for a series of teacher/student shots.  They were approved on Dreamstime on about Wednesday.... I couldn't believe it: 12 uploads in 3 days.   Feeling pretty good about myself.  And then it happened.

An extended license sale.  These pics have been up less than a week.  I can't believe it!

Okay... any awkwardness I had about model releases is now over!  Thanks for hearing my ramble.  Had to tell someone!

Off Topic / How do you name your images?
« on: January 17, 2007, 12:29 »
I've always admired clever imaginative photo titles.  But, when it comes to stock, I've always labeled my pix something simple and straightforward... TWO RED BOXES - somehow thinking a precise name would be more effective.  Or does the title matter at all?

i.e. if a photo is of a lady with a scrub pail, would "Cleaning Lady" be a more effective title than "Domestic Goddess" (stumbling here for a clever example...)

Or - is it all about the keywords?

Adobe Stock / Whoo-hoo!
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:40 »
My first batch of photos were accepted at Fotolia yesterday... one image was viewed twice and had a sale.

Is there more action on Fotolia or is this quick sale just a stroke of luck?

If I just had some time to upload.... only been on Dreamstime till now.  (I know, I  know... get off the message board and get back to work...)

General Stock Discussion / Model Release
« on: October 10, 2006, 14:15 »
So far I've mainly placed photos on Dreamstime,  but this week I've begun uploading to a few different sites to see what happens.  (Tyler, I'd previously registered at most but clicked through stockxpert, maybe you'll eventually make some pennies..)  I recognize that if I want to make any $ at microstock I'll should add people shots, so I guess I'll have to finally be bold enough to start asking for releases!

Will the agencies accept a generic release, or do I really have to have one release signed for each different agency?  Is there a general release anyone can point me to?

I might start by offering a trade-for-print on 5 or 6 frames from a recent portrait session.  What would a reasonable trade be from me?  Is just an 8x10 per file too stingy?

Thanks for any advice.  New to this (and shy about it!)

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime Down - Aug 29th
« on: August 30, 2006, 18:52 »
I see lots of "Dreamstime Down" topics in this category.... but all older.  After opening up some acceptance emails in the morning, I couldn't get onto the site yesterday to check them out... and still can't today!  Is it just me?  Getting time-out error or go straight to a Yahoo search page.  Ugh.
