New Sites - General / Re: StockPhotoSpot
« on: January 26, 2007, 19:14 »
Well they lure you with "Make Some Serious Money" charts, but once you're paid the $2, you accept that you don't have any claim to receive anything else from the picture even if the site sells it.  If you scroll down, here is the trick:

What do you mean by "buying" my photo(s)?
Everytime you upload an accepted photo(s), we will pay you a fee, this fee is a photo license fee. This means we are buying rights to distribute/resell your photo(s) without paying any further fees. You retain all copyright/ownership rights, however you agree to give us, "StockPhotoSpot" and its affiliates, full permission to resell/re-distribute these image(s) without paying any further royalities/fees to you, the photographer.

* Get paid 20c for every photo downloaded by a subscriber (limited time promotion).

No thanks!

Off Topic / Re: Web Site or Blog???
« on: January 26, 2007, 12:09 »
Blogs are maintenance-free and very handy for sharing infos in the present, very volatile though.  But if you don't have a permanent base while traveling, it is a convenient way to store on a daily basis, although you may check if you can keep everything at high resolution.

Websites are more grounded but require personal attention.

If you opt for a website:

- if you plan to sell your pictures, go for something already formatted online.

- if you don't plan to sell but would still like an online family album presentation, I would recommend to get a web name (GoDaddy is cheap), use a software like Adobe GoLive (I like it personally, very transparent approach), and create your own website with your own server at home (have it on a separate computer for security reasons).  This way you don't have to pay an outsider host and your work remains in your hands.  You can share it with your family with some passwords, or you can keep it totally public.  Your choice.

Mostly, choose what corresponds to your own needs and expectations.

Hi stokfoto and welcome here!
I just tried to login without any success.  I don't know what is wrong though... probably maintenance.

Thank you Freezingpic, Snem, and Geopappas for taking the time to build this lightbox, and also thank you to all the photographers who are taking the time to put the 5 stars for the pics they like.  Very well appreciated.

Here is the direct link for the lightbox:

Never had a sale after almost a year.  I emptied my portfolio a few months ago.  No regrets.

Thanks Bryan, good to know!  my portfolio is quite small, but it feels good to be there.  Please thank your wife for enabling you to spend so much time and energy in building a good and successful web place.

Yes I agree, this simplicity and trust is definitely appreciated.

Bryan, since you are a successful company starter (60 in 10 years is quite impressive for a young fella like yourself), I'm wondering about the successes of these companies after you have left them.  I am also wondering if you're going to get bored with LO once everything becomes more or less a daily routine.  Those are my concerns, and one of the reasons I didn't join LO straight away.  I like the spirit of what you have started there, so I decided to plunge anyway.

I hope that 60 is your Lucky Number, and that you're going to stick with it (and with us) and enjoy it for a very long time  :)

Hi Rossco and welcome!

Definitely go for it!  Agree with dbvirago about the flowers.  For the 1st ten submissions, avoid them, plus the sepia tones and the B&W.  Submit variety. Watch out for the noise.  If you have not done so yet, spend some time in the critique forum to be familiar with the site expectation, you can even register and put a few of your pictures (with a 100% size crop) for some feedback from other photographers before submitting the 1st 10.  Some do that so that they don't have to wait for a whole month before submitting again.

I joined DT last February, 2 weeks after SS, uploaded the same pictures.  Without having models in my portfolio (by choice), I earn more than 4x more at SS than at DT.

Have fun and good luck!

I'm guessing Bryan, did the 50% life royalty bonus valid up to Dec 31st helped boost the queue with plenty of pictures from new photographers who decided it was a great time to upload their portfolios?  They were very fortunate to get this special treat.

Another suggestion:  have the search by photographer's names, or at least have the option to list them alphabetically.  I couldn't find Void in the 1st page nor in the comments... ;)

Well, YY, thanks for giving your phone #.  Sorry I didn't phone you, but went through that link instead:

Honesty relative ?   mmmhhh....  you must be a lawyer then  ;)

Well if this compromising info is useless as SX admin says, then why do they ask for it?  Anyway, I would prefer to erase my 'relatively' small portfolio rather than giving them some fake info.  But that's just me.

Maybe simple, but not honest  ;)  I wouldn't do it.

Not knowing whether I would stay or not with SX, I asked a paypal transfer for the balance due, and everything went well.

I am relieved that I didn't received the SX email with that suspicious request.  When Scott received it, he contacted their customer service, waited, and didn't get any answer.  That's why he emptied his SX portfolio.

After I posted the link (which I did before the 3rd word unjustified comment...), the discussion moved to another forum site mentioned in the same thread.  DT is from Romania, and was just mentioned by another photographer regarding his own experiences.  The site lumaxart2d refers to is SX which is based in Hungary.

There are more details there.  The main reason why Scott pulled out is, and I quote:

"Wasn't my SSN they wanted... but one of three I.D. questions which is almost exclusively used only for credit verification approval.(at least in the U.S.) and then to top it off with a bribe of $20usd for the answer?"

Since Scott is a very reliable photograph, and that he mentioned that the conversation can be copied on another forum, I thought that I would mention the link here:

edited - the link has been deleted.  Here is the 1st post from that link:

Hungarian Law & Accounting at a micro site we will name "x" Requires the answering of a identity security question in the U.S. that is used almost exclusively for Identity in credit verification process?????????
And the site is willing to bribe you for it by paying $20usd for that answer?
I am going to promptly delete my entire portfolio there if it is required to be in their database.
Your Thoughts?"

Site Related / Re: Suggestion for the "Up and Coming" list
« on: January 06, 2007, 11:57 »
Thanks Adelaide.  As long as a site is legit and fair, I wouldn't penalize it with a 'black' connotation.  I would just say that the sales have been lacking for quite a long long time...  that's why unless a miracle happens I find the 'up and coming' misleading for some sites  ;)

« on: January 04, 2007, 18:48 »
There is a big difference between rising stocks, like LO, and the ones without vitality.

But if you prefer to keep the simplicity of the 2 list, that's fine.  You could maybe just change the title.  This was only a suggestion so that the new photographers wouldn't have high expectations with the 'up and coming' sites.  Most of us here know what to expect from each one anyway.

These are my experiences concerning smaller sites:

FeaturePics is ranked 7th for me, just after the Big6.  It seems fair for it to be listed along with LO.

123RF comes close in 8th place (with 4x more sales than FP, but I chose higher sale prices for FP).

CanStock comes in 9th place with half the revenues.

These 4 sites above, if 3 lists are still an option, would be my choice as rising or stable with lower sales.

Regarding the 6 remaining sites:

I don't plan to join Gimmestock nor Crestock.  Waste of time.

I pulled out of ImageVortex in September.

I had pulled out of MSP but decided to give a chance to the new owner, so I re-uploaded my portfolio in November, but there is still no activity on the site, not very promising...

I am considering leaving ScanStockPhoto and StockPhotoMedia because I only got one sale on each in November.  Adelaide, apart from the lack of sales, is there another reason you don't like SPM ?

Site Related / Suggestion for the "Up and Coming" list
« on: January 03, 2007, 13:54 »
The way it is presented, the 'up and coming' link shows a list of 10 sites which didn't make it into the Big 6 list:

Canstock
123RoyaltyFree
StockPhotoMedia
ScanStockPhoto
MicrostockPhoto
Crestock
Gimmestock
ImageVortex
FeaturePics
LuckyOliver

If it is easy to do, I would suggest splitting this list into 3, which would reflect more the reality of these sites.

Out of this list, I only see one site rising (LuckyOliver), and the other ones either stable (FeaturePics for example), or declining (the photographers having pulled out or never joined for different reasons).

This way, it would save the energy for the photographers who visit this forum and who are new to microstock not to waste their time at first with old non-successful sites.  I find the 'up and coming' title misleading as it is.

What do you think?

Very odd that the balance sheet isn't fixed yet and the the uploads which were supposed to be back today are not functioning yet.  No admin is there either for cleaning all the 15 weird links which have been added to the forum by the newcomer parasite Basder.

Looks like a one-man show taking a few days vacation break, doesn't look very professional.  Or is Inmagine pulling the plug ?
(2007 123rf, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inmagine Corp LLC)

I sincerely hope that it's fixed soon.

« on: December 26, 2006, 13:21 »
There are 2 options to change prices globally.  Go to 'Account Settings', and then:

- either "Set flat price for ALL your images"

-or "Set percentage of prior prices for ALL your images"

Setting a reasonable lower price and selling more feels good.  It's also a way for FP to stay competitive in the stock market.   I also like their attitude towards the photographers.

Featurepics.com / Re: Anyone selling at Featurepics?
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:34 »
I was selling one or two per month, then I decided to lower all the prices at $2.70 to check if it would make a difference.  It did.  November became my best month with 3 sales.  December  was my best month ever with 5 sales (3 in large format and 2 in smaller format), which at that price is the equivalent of selling 34 pictures at SS.  Although the sales show low numbers, I  expect them to grow.

dbvirago, what is your selling price at FP?
