Almost every time that I want to sign into my account, it asks me for a verification code.  However, a few seconds later, it signs me in even though I haven't entered the verification code.  (It does send a code to my email.)

Is this something other people experience also, or is it something peculiar with my account?

I noticed an annoying thing when uploading photos taken with my Sony cameras (either A7Rii or A6500).  Caption metadata that has been added to the jpeg is lost.  This does not happen when I upload files from other camera brands (Panasonic or Canon).   Similarly, when I upload Sony files to any of several other stock agencies, they get the caption data.

If I use DeepMeta, Istock gets the caption even from Sony cameras.  However, I find that a pain to use.

Has anybody else noticed this, and found a workaround?

Generally, I find uploading to Istock to be more time consuming and bothersome than other sites.  As a result, I upload to them more sparingly, focussing on files that I think might sell better there.

I have to say I'm feeling quite pleased with Adobe recently.   Yesterday afternoon I took some nice fall color shots, and then uploaded them in the evening.

This morning, when I checked, they hadn't been reviewed yet.  The next time I checked my account, it was around noon to look at my sales.  One of the shots I took yesterday had already sold (for 0.99).   From pixels to pennies in less than 24 hours.  :)

iStockPhoto.com / accepted but not "published"?
« on: October 22, 2018, 22:29 »
A peculiar thing has happened.   Two of my photos that were marked as accepted about a week ago have not shown up in my portfolio.  I notice now that the typical notation is accepted/published, while these two languish with just "accepted" beside them.

Has anybody else encountered this?

If the description is less than 10 words, they give you a snide comment "Oops, your description only has 5 words!"

Don't they know a picture is worth 1000 words?  Occasionally, a photo will need some clarification, but most of the time a good stock photo's content will be obvious from looking at it.  Shutterstock, which sells far better than Dreamstime, doesn't even ask for a separate title and description except for editorial photos.

Shutterstock.com / File transfer error when uploading
« on: May 17, 2018, 18:42 »
Recently in each batch uploaded, I have been getting one or two files with a "file transfer error," where I am asked to resubmit.  I never had this until about two weeks ago.   Is this happening to others, or is there some problem with my browser or connection?

Yesterday I received four rejection messages in a row saying that my files were rejected for an "Exposure Issue."  I thought this was odd, as the files looked fine to me (and had been accepted at other agencies).  However, today I looked in my queue of files "waiting for moderation", and they are still  there.

Shutterstock.com / United States W8-BEN tax form
« on: April 14, 2017, 17:08 »
I'm a Canadian contributor who received a notice that my form had expired.  The new form is much more complicated than the old one (actually, just much longer -- most of it doesn't apply).   I found this page to be a very useful guide on what to fill out:

http://ontariotaxmen.ca/w8-ben-e.htm

If you don't fill out this horrible form, US tax will be deducted from your revenue even though you live in a tax treaty country that exempts you from US tax.

iStockPhoto.com / Very detailed royalty report
« on: February 23, 2017, 22:41 »
ESP allowed me to download a detailed report of all my sales ( a text file that becomes a spreadsheet), including lots of info that was never available on the old iStock, such as the location of the purchaser.  However, one thing I couldn't find is anything that puts the report together with the actual photos.  It does have the title and number, so if I try hard enough I can figure out what's selling.  However, I have over 2000 photos there, and it would be nice to put this report together with the thumbnails.   I haven't installed Deep Meta. Does it help you do that?

Adobe Stock / 23 cent sales in January
« on: January 04, 2017, 18:59 »
In 2016, Fotolia was paying relatively decently, with no sales under 33 cents.  All of a sudden, this week I have had several photos with sales at 23 and 24 cents.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime still the best for editorial
« on: August 22, 2016, 12:17 »
I've seen all the Dreamstime bashing here.  I suspect that it depends on what types of photos people produce.   Many stock photographers focus on generic model released scenes of the type that is good for commercial advertising.

I find that for travel and editorial shots Dreamstime is pretty good.   Dreamstime was one of the first to accept editorial shots, and in my opinion is still the best.  They are easy to upload, and unlike other sites don't force you to jump through hoops to caption editorial shots.  They are also much more liberal in accepting just about any editorial shot, including interiors, for which many other sites insist that releases are needed even for editorial use.

Dreamstime.com / Database problems?
« on: September 09, 2015, 21:23 »
I went for about 10 days without any sales shown, and finally got two.  I'm hoping it's all just a database error that will be corrected.

My statistics page at http://www.dreamstime.com/stats.php still shows zero sales and zero accepted in September, when in fact I have had several new files accepted.

Alamy.com / What is the point of reporting zooms?
« on: March 06, 2013, 00:03 »
People here seem to talk about zooms quite a bit.  I don't know if it's just me, but I find that there is no correlation at all between zooms and sales.  I've had 30 photos sold on Alamy in the past year, and not a single one of them was reported as having received a zoom.

Hi All,

I'm only in my second month as a Shutterstock contributor, with just over 100 files on-line at this point.   I'm fairly impressed with the rapid pace of sales so far.  If that could be extrapolated to a larger portfolio, it would make my income per photo at SS more than double what it is at iStock, where I have been contributing for a few years, and have a large portfolio.   That seems out of keeping with the 100/67 ratio shown in the poll at the side here.

I'm curious, however.   Is there something that streams newly accepted photos to customers, so that the download rate is more rapid when they are new?

Oddly, some photos that are among my most popular at iStock have hardly sold at SS, whereas a couple that haven't sold at iStock are among my most popular at SS.

iStockPhoto.com / Best match seems to be reverting gradually
« on: January 15, 2012, 12:46 »
I notice that my sales are picking up a bit in the past week (still not good, but better than abysmal).   I checked several of my main topic areas with best match searches.   In about half of them, my files come up on the first page, ahead of exclusives; and in about half, it's still exclusives first.

123RF / Annoying security codes on 123RF
« on: December 08, 2011, 22:17 »
Very often, when I want to check something (e.g., my credits), the 123RF website asks me to type in a security code that appears as a graphic on the screen.  This is after I have already logged in.  It claims it won't ask me again unless I log out, but in fact it does do so, and often two or three times a day.   Is that happening to everybody, or is it something about my computer?

It appears to be serious security overkill on a website of that type.   My on-line bank and brokerage, where there is a lot more money at risk, don't have anything like that.   I assume it would be a turn-off for buyers as well.

I've recently found when I am in various web pages, I see an istock banner ad that features several thumbnails, one or two of which are always from my portfolio.  The first time I saw this I thought, "Isn't it wonderful.   Out of 9 million photos, they chose one of mine to feature in their ad."

However, this was in a browser when I was logged into my iStock account.   When I switched to a different browser, and went to the same websites, no more iStock ad at all, with or without my photos.

The ads are obviously being triggered by cookies on my computer.   Is this another example of really poor policy, where they are wasting money in streaming ads to the person who is 100% certain not to buy the photo being shown, because he already owns it?  Or are they trying to trick us into feeling grateful towards them, and upload more photos to get a princely 17% commission?

iStockPhoto.com / Istock's nitpicking on editorial captions
« on: March 14, 2011, 22:03 »
Recently, I decided to try a few editorial submissions.   One was rejected because the date I put in the caption was two days different than what was in the exif.  It was just a background photo, and hardly newsworthy.   (And how do they even know if I have the date set correctly in my camera.)   Another one was rejected because I put the date first, instead of the name of the city.

Their regular rejections are bad enough, for nearly imperceptible noise, but their editorial rejections for details in captions are beyond belief.  Oh, and they don't let you edit the caption once it's in the queue, in case you notice there's something wrong with it.

Not only are they treating their contributors like dirt, but they are wasting their own resources by having their reviewers look at the same thing over and over again.  However, I will spare them the trouble, since I'm not resubmitting anything to them for the pleasure of getting 19 or 26 cents per download.

About a year or more ago, I asked for all my former Stockxpert photos to be deleted from Thinkstock, and as far as I can tell by searching, that has been done.

The odd thing is that every couple of months I continue to receive a payment from HAAP media into my PayPal account.   Usually, its about $5, but recently there was one for $40.    I guess I should be pleased that they are paying me money that I had not expected, but it makes me wonder what it is for, and how long ago those sales occurred.

Is anybody else in this situation, and do you know what its about?

123RF / When will editorial photos go on sale at 123RF?
« on: April 27, 2010, 22:52 »
I have had several editorial photos accepted, but I see that they have not gone live.   They don't show up as part of my portfolio, and they don't come up in a search.    Has anybody heard about when they are actually going to go on sale?

I've had reasonably good luck with selling editorial at Dreamstime and Bigstock, and I'm happy to give 123RF a chance as well.    I find that there is very little rhyme or reason as to which editorial submissions each site accepts.   Some of my best editorials (in my opinion) have been rejected at Dreamstime and/or Bigstock, but I'm pleased to see that they were accepted at 123RF.

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime acceptance rates going up?
« on: March 19, 2009, 18:24 »
I've been with Dreamstime for over a year now.  My average acceptance rate has been 58%, and never more than 65% in any month.   All of a sudden, so far this month of March, with 21 submissions, my acceptance rate has jumped to 86%.   I don't think my photos have gotten any better.  Actually, I think my acceptance rate should have been this high all along :)

I'm curious, is it just a fluke with my submissions, or are they getting easier for everybody?  Are they trying to rapidly increase the number of files they have on-line?
