Just a poll to see how long it took most people to make their first set of steady sales at BigStock.
I think the results could be interesting.

Yeah.
I just posted a thread above this one, asking how long it takes people to see sales on BigStock, and how big the portfolios are when sales start rolling in.
Just as a matter of interest. I think I'll create a poll instead perhaps.

Just a question - how long did it take before you started getting more regular sales on StockXpert?
And how large was your portfolio at the time?

I've been uploading for 3 weeks without a sale (I know it takes time), but I've noticed activity on sales of my images already on SS, FT, CST and 123RF.
StockXpert, BigStock and DT are dead for me in the same time.
Altough, admittedly, my portfolio is tiny...

Would be interesting to see what the trends are in terms of time before first sale in relation to portfolio size (on StockXpert)

Hi Vish,

Nice one!
Had a look - you have some good work!

How long did it take before you got your first download?

And in general for anyone else reading this post - how long did it take (and how big was your portfolio) before regular sales starting coming in?

Thanks!

Dreamstime.com / Re: Why DT is not working for me?
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:56 »
It took me a few months to start seeing regular sales on DT. From what I see, quite a few people said that DT was a slow starter. I'm sure persistence will pay off.

Thanks Goldenangel.
I look forward to that day when my photography has improved in leaps and bounds and I can honestly say "I'm making some decent money now off microstock".

Seems we're slowly opening a can of worms here..

To give an indication - I have a somewhat poor acceptance ratio regardless on SS for example (only about 60% I think).
FT, however is ridiculous.
I've submitted around the same number of pics, and although I'm still new to this, my port on SS is around 55 images only. My port on FT is around 16!!!
That's not very encouraging at all.
I've made 35 downloads this month and counting, on a port of 55 images.
I can't say that's bad at all for SS, but shocking for FT.

Seems they're shooting themselves in the foot - if they accepted some fine images from the rest of us, they may actually make more money.
Quality is important - I get that - and there's no compromise, however, in financial times like this, they should potentially be looking into growing their base to make more sales, or at least broaden horizons.

If I was a marketer, I would likely go to the site that has the most images available.
This increases my chances of finding what I'm looking for - surely?

I have a really bad acceptance ratio at DT.
Most of my images are rejected - the same images that are making a few downloads on other sites.

I see that DT is working well for some - and I guess it will for me if I persist.
However, because of my high rejection ratio, I have my 2nd smallest portfolio at DT of all other sires. The smallest is FT for the same reason.
The irony is that I already made a sale at FT, and none at DT.

I agree with what people are saying - and maybe it's a good thing that they're picky about their images.
I guess there are different target markets for various Microstock sites and some will hit it off well with certain sites because of their predominant subject matter, and others won't.

I'm really just hoping mine will pick up eventually and I can grow my port to beyond the microscopic size it is now.

Still, I think persistence will pay off.

83
Hmmm...
I'm wondering what's going on here.
I've had images waiting for almost 30 hours now.

Maybe their reviewers have their favourites and I'm clearly not one of them ;)
In fact, it's probably like that at DT too (for me).
The rest seem to favour my uploads (for now anyway) ;)

123RF / Re: First download after only 3 weeks!
« on: March 24, 2009, 04:20 »
Thanks guys!

Funny you mention DT - My rejection ratio is stupidly high there and as a result, haven't made a single sale there.
I'm hoping things will pick up soon.

Recently got my new 105mm Macro DG EX - so some interesting stuff should come out of that :)

85
I agree,

FT is absolutely ridiculous in terms of rejection ratio.
They're certainly the highest for me, and in turn, the least profitable of the big 6 (for me).

« on: March 23, 2009, 05:24 »
Woohoooo!
I got my first download (actually, two on the same day - one "SUB" and one "U").
I'm quite stoked at this idea!

Hopefully things will pick up nicely!

Just thought I would provide a little motivation for others out there!

:)

Woohoo!
Got my first sale on CanStock this weekend!
Ok, it was a subscription sale, but awesome nonetheless.
Only been here for 3 weeks!

Let the sales start rolling in now!
 ;D

Ok, just realised that CanstockPhoto also supports single exclusive images.

So, these sites support single exclusive images:

Fotolia
DreamsTime
CanStockPhoto

Chris, don't get demotivated. I was also rejected 3 times before I got in. Just shoot more, look at your pictures, choose a few. If you can't post on the IS forum, somone can post them for you or you can post somewhere else as you suggested. I'm sure you will get in if you don't give up.

Thanks, goldenangel,
I recently bought my Sigma f2.8 105mm Macro lens.
I'll play with that and see what I can come up with ;)

Thanks again

Mmmooooooo!!!

I just got rejected AGAIN at IS :( 3rd time now.
 ???
 >:(
I'm  not quite sure how to handle all of this rejection.
This is the only site that has rejected my applications?

I'm going to upload watermarked images on my blog site, and I'm going to ask for crit on those images.
This is absolute nonsense :(

I'm so demotivated!

It's really weird how some people have FT and IS as their biggest sellers, and other SS and IS, and then BigStock etc.
I've seen a common pattern between threads across the forums where it stands true: Different strokes for different folks.

I'm applying again at FT today. Really hoping they'll accept my application then hoping they'll be as good to me as SS has ;)

Holding thumbs  ::)

Hi all,

I was recently uploading and decided to test what difference exclusive images makes to revenue, search results and acceptance or reviews.

Out of the big 6, which if the sites actually support exclusive images.
I'm not talking about being an exclusive contributor - simply the images.

So far, I can only see that Dreamstime and Fotolia support this?
Any others?

Is there any benefit to the contributor to submitting exclusive images?

Thanks :)

I've been with BigStock for a whole whopping <wait for it>... 3 weeks!
I haven't had a sale yet, but from what I see, seems I could be pleasantly surprised if I keep working on my portfolios.
I agree with the review times - it's taken a while to get reviews done, often 10 days or more...
Still, I think I'll stick around :)

Hmm...

After posting this yesterday, my images were all reviewed.
Seems FlemishDreams might know a thing or two judging by the cryptic remark  ;D

I can't really speak from too much experience.
I'm new to this, but comparatively speaking, BigStock has suddenly dropped in review pace...
I have images waiting for 10 days now.

Also, I haven't made a sale there, and I've made 34 at Shutterstock, and one (YEAH A WHOLE ONE) at FT in 3 weeks.

I'm sticking around though - by the sounds of things, BigStock could come back at any time, and I wanna be on the train when it starts gathering speed again ;)

Bigstock.com / Re: People leaving?
« on: March 18, 2009, 07:54 »
No no - if anyone wants to leave, please do so.
That gives the rest of us a better chance to sell our photos ;)

Seriously, though - I'm new, and my portfolio is small enough to be called a Nano-Portfolio.
I haven't made a sale yet from BigStock, and the review times are the worst of the 10 odd sites I subscribe to.
Next is DT and then FT. The rest are usually pretty quick to review.
I have had images waiting for review for 10 days at BigStock now.
I don't really know if that's bad or good, but it's the worst of the 10.

That aside, it's not enough to make me wanna leave (esp not after 3 weeks and a tiny port).
I'm certainly staying and giving a fair chance to make my decisions on who goes and who stays.

Just my 2 cents worth :)

97
Interesting stuff.
I'm currently subscribed to 9. Although I've only been at this for 3 weeks.
So far, SS has done very well for me, Fotolia 1 sale and the rest are nothing to talk about.
Other than the overly stringent approval process from Fotolia and DT, I can say it's difficult to keep uploading all my stuff to every single site I subscribe to.

But, judging by some of the posts on the forum, I would say it's probably worth my while in the long run.
Kind of like a pension fund I guess.

It's not only how much, but how long. So, earning from microstock photography is a bit like compound interest in a sense ;)
Nice talk for a time of financial crisis - LOL!  ;D

For me, DT has the 2nd highest rejection rate of photos.
Reading these posts, however, certainly gives me hope.
I'm also going to keep uploading. I guess some sites take time while others offer faster turn-around.

By the looks of things, that's just the way of the game...

DT has been quite slow for me lately, but I had an amazing day yesterday 50% of my March earnings in just one day, no subs.

Of course, things went back to normal.  No sale today.

Regards,
Adelaide

WOW! That's pretty good.
Gives me hope! I have a rather high rejection rate and haven't made a sale in the 3 weeks that I've been at DT.
News like this keeps me there, though.
Thanks :)

So what if someone tells you: "Downsize it to 6 MP and we will sell it for you, leave it at 12 MP and we don't accept it at all?"... Things are rarely black and white. I have downsized quite a few images from XXL to L to get them up - obviously that was because the base image wasn't the best to start with but still I made some money from them that I wouldn't have otherwise.

And yes, for initial application something in the range of 6MP is sufficient and can hide some minor focus, noise or artifacting issues.

My proposal to people for the initial application always is to upload three completely different topics to show how broad your capabilities are. Animal, People, Still life, Isolated, whatever, just show different things. You should choose images that you didn't post process much because they were already good coming directly out of the camera.

And as suggested before, upload your images fullsize (watermarked) somewhere like vox.com and put up links in this thread to have people tell you what they think about them.

Again, good points.

I never thought of things the way you've described above, and you've given
Thanks for your feedback - I'm learning as I go along, and finding this forum particularly valuable.
