General Stock Discussion / Re: Photo4me--Good or bad?
« on: July 29, 2020, 12:31 »
A few years ago I uploaded a handful of my best.  Just recently, I got a sale.

Their 'recently sold' page tells me that what sells there are UK landscapes, landmarks, planes and boats.  I don't have any of that.  But getting the sale, naturally, has me thinking about uploading more.

I like the speculation that FB might be negotiating to buy SS.    FB will do absolutely anything to boost ad revenue, it's basically all they care about.   A huge library of dirt cheap stock imagery, integrated with their post editor, would be a natural.  The fact that it's 80% cr@p is lost on someone like Zuckerberg, who has a closet full of gray t-shirts.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Image Packs
« on: May 14, 2020, 12:17 »
Sad. Maybe inevitable, but still sad.  Especially the fake-y part about 'personal' use - give me a break.

79
No idea what's going on inside SS but I'm busy shooting "Shutterstock reviewer sniffing glue", "Shutterstock reviewer ingesting peyote", "Shutterstock reviewer toking in parking lot"...

In all seriousness, Zazzle's slimy practices - and miserably cr@ppy web site - have been well known for years. IMHO there's no justification for dealing with them.

I don't read the FAA forum much anymore but I think I remember a thread about email campaigns having been broken for a long time.

Alamy.com / Re: 10 years in alamy, should I give up?
« on: February 26, 2020, 11:33 »
I quit doing microstock years ago and closed all my accounts - except Alamy, I left about 300 old images there, many are just 6mp.   And surprisingly I still get a sale once in a while.  I'm even thinking about uploading a few new ones for no real reason.

But Alamy's tedious keywording hoo-ha was one reason I gave up.  I never even understood it.  And I'm done jumping through hoops for the chance to make $5 on some day in the far future.

Has anything changed there in the last few years?

He's out of ideas and tired of fighting the decline. There's no way this business can continue to justify a $2 billion valuation.

General Photography Discussion / Re: other photography forums?

MicrostockGroup is great but many of us have basically given up on microstock and are looking for other ways to sell photos.

As mentioned: http://takingstock.proboards.com/ has the potential for the questions you asked, if more people would join and participate, ask questions and contribute./i]

I just looked at takingstock, or tried to: you can't even view the forum without applying for an account, which requires a portfolio  link, which I don't have because I no longer sell stock.  Gee guys.

I got out of SS years ago and my cheery thought for 2020 is this: we've now seen every sort of crazy, senseless activity there,  it only gets worse over time.  Surely it's possible that their basic accounting is full of loopholes and your photos are ending up being used by Big Important Customers via transactions in which you're not even getting a penny. And how would you ever know?

FStoppers, CambridgeInColor, I know about.  CIC was always a good source of info.  There's some activity on those forums, but not what I'd call a lot.

What I'd really like to find is a place where photographers talk about the challenges of selling 'art' photography; topics like SEO, online marketing, PODs, maybe even selling 'live' at shows.   There are tons of sites that supposedly teach you about SEO but many are old and out of date, and they're all trying to sell you something.

The logical place for this would be the forum at FineArtAmerica, where most prints are sold.  But their forum is tightly controlled by a moderator who won't allow any criticism of FAA or discussion of competitors.

Yes I know it's tough and the social media channels that used to sort-of work really don't anymore. It's still possible to get your work turning up in Google searches.  And I'd really, really like to see a new POD get started that does things better than FineArtAmerica.

General Photography Discussion / other photography forums?
« on: December 19, 2019, 15:37 »
MicrostockGroup is great and I've followed it for years even though I no longer shoot microstock.  People here can pretty much say what they want, unlike the captive forums of the microstocks and PODs.

For general photography discussions, the DPReview forum seems most active.

Then there's FredMiranda, Lumininous-landscape, and a lot of others that don't seem very active anymore.  I recently did a search and found on most forums, current activity was a trickle.  Some were ghost towns.

Does anyone here know of a good and currently active photography forum, besides DPReview?

Moving into 2020, we will continue to focus our efforts on producing and distributing the best visual content, and in turn allowing our customers to engage with their audiences in an authentic way while also saving them time and money and reducing their risks. Of course, we need to do all of this in a way that leverages the developments in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, continues to embrace mobile, recognizes the increasing importance of video, recognizes changes in customer tools and workflows and in a way that allows businesses of all sizes to take advantage of the power of imagery.

A breathtaking display of vacuous, disingenuous and totally insincere CorporateSpeak.  In this, Getty truly is an industry leader.

Some hot shot takeover artists hidimg behind a lot of cliches about benefits to customers. To pay off the debt and still enrich themselves, all they could do was set all the dials to maximize short term profits and abandon any ideas of a sustainable business.

Off Topic / Re: iPhone 11 Pro's computational photography
« on: November 18, 2019, 12:24 »
Another misleading and over-hyped buzzword like "AI".  We've all been doing computational photography for years.  The iPhone 11 dials up DR compression, saturation, mid-tone contrast and maybe a couple other things - resulting in photos that reliably elicit "stunning" and "awesome" from the average person.

There's only 1 way impeachment can succeed:  around 20 Republican Senators in 'swing' states get together and decide they'd rather have someone other than Trump on the Republican ticket in 2020.  They could 'reluctantly' vote to convict him and have a fig leaf of cover.

General Stock Discussion / WikiMedia contest
« on: September 16, 2019, 12:54 »
Wikimedia has a photo contest for 'monuments' in the U.S..

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019_in_the_United_States

I have a couple I might enter.  But I know nothing about WikMedia or the " CC BY-SA license" required for a submission.   I followed the link to the pages of legalese and my eyes instantly glazed over.

Is the bottom line simply that I'd be putting my full-size image file in the public domain?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: August 30, 2019, 11:55 »
If you're not on any other stock sites, can you list images as "exclusive" with Alamy and still sell them as art prints on PODs?

94
Does anyone know if other agencies follow this same practices ? This de-values our work by a lot I would assume.

My assumption is that they all do things like this - or if an agency isn't doing it now, it might start next week.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Trademarks at FAA
« on: August 14, 2019, 13:09 »
FAA checks nothing. If they get a complaint, they delete your images with no notice, and no discussion. It doesn't matter if you think the complaint is unjustified; FAA won't do a thing for you.

You can sell a lot of things as 'art', meaning individual prints; but put it on a handbag or a coffee cup and it's a 'product'.

97
I've had photos on FAA for years and sell a couple of prints there every month, occasionally more. At least when I sell one I make some money, as we can set our own markups there.

I found out long ago that the big stock 'agencies' were selling images through POD and that was a big reason I closed all my microstock accounts.

FAA is basically run by one guy, with one interest: increasing his bottom line.  He couldn't care less about photographers or artists, and he's not one himself.  He never communicates with contributors or responds to complaints.  If you're unhappy with the deals he's cut with big 'content' companies, there is absolutely no point in attempting to contact him or his handful of FAA employees; your only choice is to close the microstock accounts.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Red Bubble Technical Support

That bubble burst long ago. Unless you're selling t shirts to kids, there isn't a nickel to be made there.

Alamy.com / Re: Have sales plummeted for all or just me?
« on: May 14, 2019, 17:51 »
No sales this year, and I'd  like to close the account. Cleared balance is $48 and I'll be dead before it reaches $50.  If I close, will they pay me that balance?

100
Will this be a great way to GET MY NAME OUT THERE?
Will these be SALES I WOULD OTHERWISE NOT HAVE GOTTEN?
