Yuri, you most likely won't answer this the way we want you to, but I will ask anyway:

After the years (!) of iStock giving us proof of not being able to listen to (well established, professional) contributors AND constantly (to this day) having severe problems with their day to day business operations (site up-time, staff replacements, seemingly untested implementation of new features, inability to pay contributors, the list is endless, literally), what in heaven's name did Getty promise you to simply overlook all these previously mentioned facts?

Thanks for reading and even more thanks for a potential answer to that.

Now here is something that is interesting. I could really get in trouble here. I will kindly remind you that a certain CEO left the company about 2 years ago and most of the matters you are addressing dates back to then....

Since you're still part of the iStock family I wonder why you don't seem to be concerned about their IT department skills that have proven to preform miserably up to this day (PP reporting, ringing any bells?).

So for how much longer is the CEO, that left the company 2 years ago, going to be held responsible for all this?

Thanks anyway for taking the time.

OT question: I can't see any image prices on your pictures  :P

Do I have to register to see the prices or do you only offer your images at the agencies and not on Symbiostock  :o ??

What's holding me back?

I don't understand what it is. Can someone explain it in very simple terms?

It's a self hosted site? But it links sites together for search so if you don't have images, someone else's in the network are show? Is there a consistent look and feel so customers from one Sym site are immediately comfortable with another site?

I'm probably not the best person to give you a thorough explanation so I just won't even try.

My suggestion to you is go to www.symbiostock.info which is a meta search engine crawling the Symbiostock network, meaning that the search results are being compiled from all Symbiostock members.

Once you have a list of search results, click on different images and you will be redirected to the respective photographer and his/her individual Symbiostock web site.

Then you will see the "similarity" or "feel" of the Symbiostock sites in general.

If you are a hard core CSS and PHP programmer you can make your own Symbiostock site look any way you want, the sky is the limit.

Many new developments and plugins are being developed on an ongoing basis so there will be a solution for mostly any issue that might come up.

I'm intrigued by Symbiostock, but I have yet to hear of anyone seeing many sales from it.

Yes, there's the occasional "I got my first sale!" but it's going to take more than the occasional sale, or even the daily sale, to motivate me to invest the time in this.

Still, I applaud Leo for his efforts and for everyone else who has jumped in to test the waters for the rest of us.  I really want to see you succeed, and I'll gladly join you if and when your efforts prove fruitful.

I had a sale with 150 images online.

I'm nowhere near breaking even or anything with that single sale but I can afford to take some time "off" in order to set up my Symbiostock site just to run it as a "test".

Symbiostock has tremendous potential which can be "enhanced" by joining and adding good content to it.

We get to keep 100% - period. Name any agency that offers you that kind of deal. That in itself is worth giving it a try.

It's a no-brainer for me.

I had SEO Ultimate running until I realized that some SEO features that "I need" (aparently like meta keywords) wouldn't work.

Since YOAST has been brought up before I installed it and just got overwhelmed by it.

Anywho, I had my meta robot tag sorted out before I installed YOAST. Now I apparentlty have to use a robots.txt file on the server to pick up the indexing instructions for those little critters.

All fine and dandy but since I need to "learn" how to write the robots.txt I started to realize that I must have been sharing my entire server contents for all these years by allowing the robots to index everything and follow all links.

Here is my question: My Symbiostock site is running on my main hosting package (root folder). I do have a few subfolders/domains that have their own top level domains. Of course I don't want those to be indexed under the main URL/subdomain/etc.etc.

So do I have to write exclusions for each and every subfolder on my server that I don't want to bots to crawl? Or do the bots only crawl the readable links on my actual Symbiostock page?

I have no clue how all this works and what these robots actually can see. Do they see just the links on my index.php page and all subsequent links from all those pages or can the bots simply see my entire folder structure on my web host as if I logged on via FTP or using the file manager?

I hope I could explain the issue I'm having. If not please ask me what to clarify.

The code I wanted to add to the robots.txt would have been:

Quote
User-agent: *
Disallow:

My experience may be unrelated but I had problems processing old images of mine that were saved in Photoshop as "Progressive" jpg.

I had to re-save them as "Baseline" for ImageMagick to work properly.

Also worth mentioning is that I used to have a problem with files that were saved in the "Adobe RGB" color space so the image processor only could work correctly if the images were saved in sRGB.

Symbiostock - SEO & Marketing / Re: Symbiostock.net

I knew it: Leo, Mathew and Andrzej are one and the same person
http://www.symbiostock.net/team/

Just kidding, the site looks awesome! Keep up the great work!

... Leo, can you recommend one that works well with the SY theme?

I'm using "SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam" and didn't have any problems yet.

Symbiostock - General / Noise and shared hosting limits...
« on: July 03, 2013, 19:09 »
Leo keeps talking about being the noisy neighbor on the server when running a Symbiostock site. That got me thinking.

I've installed one Symbiostock site so far which is more or less as a test with only a fraction of my portfolio to get the hang of the whole operation. It will remain on the network, so I'm trying to get everything right from the get go.

Eventually I will add a second Symbiostock site on another domain for the rest of my port.

As most of us are hosted on shared hosting packages and after realizing the "big" amount of bandwidth from obviously very few customers performing searches across the network, I started to get concerned.

I'm with Hostgator and like Bluehost they advertise that we have no limits (storage space/bandwidth) which we all know is bogus. No company can offer unlimited and when I did research for my web host, I saw very often that customers were lured into such packages but eventually got kicked off the servers because they created too much ... noise (running forums etc.). I also understand that every host has its own limitations before they actually kick you out and they will let you know beforehand. I'm just not in the mood, having to move my entire Symbiostock installation, including images to another host just because I ignored the potential noise factor.

Whether it's memory usage or bandwidth issues, I'm starting to get worried that network searches (thumbnail transfers, enlarged preview transfers etc.) will eventually explode once customers keep performing searches from any given Symbiostock site.

Are my concerns negligible or may this become a serious issue down the road?

I almost pray that my questions are too stupid and there is nothing to worry about. I'm just not a pro when it comes to high volume traffic issues etc. because Symbiostock hopefully and eventually will become a high traffic beast, right?

Thanks in advance.

You can do that with CSS, it's a bit safer (or proper or whatever :) ) to do it in the PHP.  Found the post where we worked this out initially:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/how-can-i-remove-the-dropdown-in-between-the-search-bar-and-the-search-button/msg313226/#msg313226

The line numbers may be off but it should still work.

Thanks for posting this. I was not aware which version is safer and/or preferred to be used.

I used the CSS solution and have not run into any issues whatsoever. This may be because I was not messing with any php files directly.

Should I still resort to changing the php file instead of using the CSS option? Is the CSS solution more prone to problems?

I'm trying to understand the pros and cons between the CSS way and the php way.

Thanks in advance.

I like your color scheme and the design so far is nice.

You have to add the following code to your child theme's CSS file to make the drop down menu (for blog search) disappear:

Quote
#symbiostock_main_search #select_type {
   display: none;
}

188
I don't know. I still have trouble using the child theme for anything beyond CSS.

My understanding of changing php files within the child theme so far is following:

I need to copy the php file to be changed AND all dependent php files to the child theme. With dependent php files I mean all those that are subsequently called/included in the original php file and its dependent files. I checked this in one or two instances and ended up with a considerable chain of files.
I think that doesn't really work because if any changes are done in those files by a theme update the child theme will miss/overrule those and I end up with a pile of work to do with every update as well.

All that being said I am sure there must be smarter ways to use the child theme for such tweaks. So I'd appreciate helpful tips  ;)

I see what you mean, sounds like a recipe for disaster, not a good idea to use the child theme for that then.

I thought about that problem before and was hesitant to try it out, now you've proven why.

189
I definitely prefer a solution that survives theme updates.

I just wanted to hear from other Symbiostock users if my concern is justified that on some monitor resolutions the network results cannot be seen if the site where the search was performed doesn't yield any results.

If so, then I think it should be a major feature in one of the future versions.

We all want the search result pages to look as good as possible to generate sales for everyone right?

191
I'm by far no Wordpress whizz so talking about plugins together with "genetics lab" just leave me with a big question mark over my head but I'm sure you got it all figured out.

I was thinking to "just" implement an "on" and "off" button in the admin panel to turn the categories on the search results page on or off.

I don't know if that makes any sense.

192
I showed my wife how awesome Symbiostock is by performing random searches from my Symbiostock web site.

Everything was fine and dandy as long as some of my images were displayed along with the network's search results below but when one search returned none of my images and just displayed the categories of my site it was not apparent to her that the network results below my categories were available.

My screen resolution (1920x1080) resulted in, what appeared, no search results. If a potential buyer doesn't pay attention to the scroll bar on the right and notices that he/she can scroll down to see the network's results.

Is there a way either to reduce/remove the categories on the search results if there are NO matches on my site, so it es easier to notice that the network results appear right underneath?

I hope I could express myself properly about the issue I'm trying to explain.

Feel free to ask any questions if anything is unclear. Thanks.

193
I changed the rank to "1" for a few images but they don't show ahead of many others that are defaulted at "2".

Do we have to re-process all images with this feature available now or is it instantly applied to all images?

194
Did you change anything?

I installed the recent version from my machine and it worked great.

LOL, no I didn't do anything. I just saw that you installed it again and now it works.

Makes me feel stupid. No idea what caused this...  :P

Thanks for checking! Much appreciated!

195
Whoops, I get no search results when performing a search.

It shows the number of images that should be displayed but no thumbnails, just page numbers that I can click on.
Network results also don't show.

 :P

196
Update apparently went fine although my Symbiocard still shows 2.4.8 and in my admin panel it states 2.4.9

Testing the rating and ranking feature now.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Big thanks + Appology too
« on: June 30, 2013, 08:23 »
Thanks to Leo and all the helpers. It's going to be an interesting experience.

Hopefully we can motivate lots of more photographers to set up their own Symbiostock sites so the library will exceed a critical size very soon in order to become a serious alternative to the agencies!

198
... And another suggestion would be to have a "No release, editorial use only!" mark as well, Just like it has been done with the "Exclusive Image" with the latest update.

Ha, this might be the end of the bug-road but it will lead to several consecutive massive 6 lane highways for your to conquer.

Leo and the three Musketeers saving the day!

You guys are doing great!

Will the upcoming updates also require a de-activate/activate routine or will it be enough to just press the update button?
