iStockPhoto.com / Re: More money coming?
« on: December 24, 2014, 08:57 »
Every time I look at the poll numbers on the right and think, maybe I really should put my stuff on istock, somebody starts a thread like this and saves me.

Thanks.......:-)

A thread about getting a decent value sale puts you off?
Maybe I misunderstood.  I took it as a negative post.

I do have a debate with myself regarding istock.  I am not sure I want another agency though the poll results indicate I should add them.  But all the drama and negativity surrounding them here always puts me off again.

Since perhaps you have a different opinion, do you think it worth the time to join them now?  I have a lttle over 4,000 images on SS and others.

When you make more from your job at McDonalds.
Isn't that pretty much every day?

I am confused about the $11,000 do you mean total or annually or what?

As others have said it is impossible to say as everyone's circumstance
are different.  Even excellent work might not do as good as older ones beause of search placement.

A rule of thumb I was given when I started was $1 per image per year.  You should do better if the work is good but for projections and budgeting that is what I use.

If you need $11,000 quickly I would suggest another line of work.

note that when i say i need $11000, it does not imply to be monthly or annually-this is just ridiculous and i know it...but what i meant was with good quality vectors online and a large portfolio, within how many years would i be able to make that money...in short, i want to know if there is a constancy in the income of microstockers or it all depends on luck!!
$11,000 annually is not ridiculous, rather quite doable.  However, whether the time invested would have produced more income directed towards other pursuits is another question.  This is not an easy business and working a minimum wage job would likely produce more income per hour invested.  But that would not be nearly as much fun.:-)

This is the kind of questions we get thanks to all the articles, books, blogs making microstock sound like a get rich quick scheme.
You can tell when the party is over when there is more money in showing how to do something than in doing it.

In my experience they do not reject whole batches.   They have been very fair with of my images.  But if you can see blur so can they.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Daily Sales Limit?
« on: November 27, 2014, 01:14 »
After observing my sales pattern for a few months, I strongly feel there is something really wrong with SS reported sales.
I understand that the number of total photos is increasing and that sales can descrease, but I do not understand how is posssible that in the past two months daily sales are slowing down and stopping when approaching the 20 mark! This happens almost every day. Today, for example, 18 dlds at 2pm and then nothing...
I used to have between 25 and 35 sales in weekdays until last Spring, and then things leveled to the low... Very frustrating...anybody has the same problem?
I emailed Ss and waiting for some feedback...

Cheers
Why is it that when anyone's sales drop the first reaction is some kind of conspiracy theory that SS is out to screw them?  You already gave the answer, the only one that makes any sense:  more images on line means any individuals share of the pie keeps getting smaller.  And the quality keeps getting higher, so to keep pace you have to upload more and better.  Remember success breeds copycats.  If you were doing well your images are going to get copied which means you sell less.

Take your best sellers and do a search for the primary keywords.  What comes up? Where are your images in the ranking?  Be honest, are your images as good as the others?  Are they dated or do they fit the style designers want today?  Are they of a subject that is not current right now, or out of fad?

My #1 best seller (by far) is in a niche that I found several years ago.  I did a search and found almost nothing there so I produced images to fill that niche.  Five of then took off and for a while sold multiple times per week, almost every day in fact.  But that same search today generates dozens of similar images, some I have to admit much better than mine.  My best seller still sells, but not anywhere close to what it used to.

Analyzing your progress is part of this business.  When things change, sales drop for example, look no further than your own portfolio.  That's what I do.  I don't blame success or failure on anyone but myself.

Always a possibility if you violate the terms of service.  Upload stolen work for example.

Other than that why would they close your account?

New Sites - General / Re: PIXYLOO Announcement
« on: November 22, 2014, 04:15 »
So I guess it's not that hard to introduce youself?
You are Randy Mckown: "I'm the founder of PIXYLOO & a professional photographer based out of the United States."

...based out of the United States? Where?

http://www.dreamstime.com/fotoeye75_info

For those who didn't understand my point!
I'm just wondering why the owner of a new agency is lying he's based out of the United States in his profile on PIXYLOO!
I can't trust him and won't upload my portfolio!

I don`t understand what you mean?  He has said several times he is in the USA in Missouri in fact which matches the address in the link to his dreamstime account you posted.  So what is the issue???

Just received a promotional email from KelbyOne advertising the DPC.  Anyone else get this?

I assume KelbyOne is getting paid or getting a cut.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock Reports Q3 2014 Results
« on: November 07, 2014, 00:40 »
- Image collection grew 44%; currently exceeds 44 million images and 2.1 million video clips

this is huge, how long they can sustain such a growth ? soon they will have 2-300 million pics on sale, how are we supposed to stand out or even to make steady sales there ? however, i'm sure most of the growth is in the top selling niches.

Mind boggling.  Every time I sell an image I think "someone picked that out of 40 million options".  How on earth did they find mine???

GLStock / GL suspending uploads?
« on: October 28, 2014, 20:49 »
Just got a message from GL stating in part:
Quote
In order to better support our faithful contributor base and maximize your earnings, we will be suspending all uploading until further notice. With over 60,000+ new images uploaded per month, we are taking in more content than we can sell and that is hurting everyone, especially you. This strategy will allow us to focus on selling the quality content you have already provided us.

Anyone else get this?  or is it just for the contributors they don't want anymore?

Latex gloves are still widely used by the medical field all around here and if you or they are allergic to latex then they wear the other non latex vinyl or the non latex Nitril, it all depends.

These are also widely used in other specialty fields other then the medical industry as well.
Interesting, our local fire department just dumped their entire stock of latex gloves as "no longer suitable for use" and replaced them with non-latex.  The directive to do so came down from higher, so I thought that it was a national thing, guess not.
This I could see with the fire dept since they are in contact with people in life threatening situations and you don't have time to find out if they are allergic to latex or not.
Yeah, that makes sense.  My son is a volunteer FF, first responder and he had to go through all his kit and go bags & remove anything latex.

For example, take an image of a child getting an injection from a doctor.  Is the child looking at the camera, at the doctor, or away?  Is the doctor wearing accurate, protective gloves?  Where is the center of focus?  The child?  The doctor?  The syringe?  Is there room for text?  Is the color palette based on bright colors or pastels?  Is the shot being administered in a home, office, or hospital? Is there professional medical equipment in the background? What color are the scrubs?  Is the doctor's protective clothing applied correctly? Does the setting look North American, European, or Asian? Does the scene, lighting, etc..., look natural or manufactured?
You are making my head hurt.  Can't we just go back to shooting apples on white? </joking>

August was BME by a huge amount due to an unprecedented number of ELs.  September down from that but still a good month.  Number of DLs seems steady, dollar amount varies depending on license type.  September almost all subs August was lots of ELs and SODs.

New Sites - General / Re: new site stocktal

Well I got a reply from Stocktal.  They say my account has been suspended because my titles and descriptions are just copy paste and not unique to Stocktal.  Since I do not have the time to re-do 4000 files I guess I am done at Stocktal.  I can see why a new site wants this for SEO but no other site demands it.

Well, I got this email this morning:

Hello John, Thank you for taking an assessment at StockTal - Royalty Free Images! Result: Pending Date: 09/06/2014 Comments: Your account has been set to pending. Please contact support to understand how your account can be restored. Thank you. Best regards, StockTal - Royalty Free Images
I have no idea what that means.  I took the 'assessment' a while ago and have since uploaded over 800 files.  So now I am set to 'pending'?  Does not make any sense.
I'm starting to think those who had serious doubts were correct.  They do not seem to have a handle on things very well.  Maybe this is a glitch, but I'm not permitted to upload anymore despite all of the files except the last 20 being accepted.

I thought it might the 'speeding ticket' others have mentioned but I was careful to keep the upload below 1 gig per day as Jack recommended.

I've emailed support for an answer.  Jack if you are still monitoring this thread how about a little help?

see previous post fro stocktal -- they've eliminated categories altogether....

I went through Jack-Stocktal's replies and can't find anything about Category elimination.  Some mention of emails from people stating such, but I never got one. Categories are still on the site as of today.
I got the email, and posted it above.  But I uploaded files today and the category system is still in place.  I added the categories, just in case, but this is confusing.
I do not have a big problem with categories if they are easy to do.  But their system was already out of hand and with the ability to add your own was going to be a train wreck.

Dear StockTal Photographer,

We have reassessed the stand on required category selection and the category section in your submissions page will be removed including the category instances found on the site. We hope this will ease some of the burden on you and you will continue to submit your wonderful creations on StockTal.

Best Wishes
StockTal
It speaks well for any company that has the guts to 'reassess' a position.  Too often corporate culture or ego or CYA gets in the road of improvements.
Thank you Stocktal for listening and taking things under advisement.
