Could have done with Paul the Octopus in goal for England!

Very open final, but I'll tip the Spanish. Holland need the ball to play and Spain will deprive them.

I have to say, since England lost the World Cup has been more enjoyable than usual.

Well done the Netherlands and Spain!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Less or More Keywords?
« on: July 04, 2010, 15:00 »
Hi Steve - I take your point, but my 20 IS slots are filled with totally different pics. Batches which I usually do in Fotostation are out of the question with my current workflow.

Next problem acceptance, it's not great over there. SS will take 20/20, IS less than half. I have no problem with this, but kewording for IS is as time consuming as it is for Alamy to do it correctly. I am wasting my time typing in one man, only one man, one young man, etc, only for them to reject it. It takes me about 5 secods to type, man, wedding, happy, smiling, outdoor, caucasian, near, then I forget it for a week.

Seven days later if an image is accepted, then in my book that warrants time spent over keywording correctly. It's not easy to get it right, and is very important on IS. Even if uploaded a batch of 20 similars, then I'd do the same.

It saves me time, avoids debatable keyword rejections, and I can still batch re-edit them with a bit of copy and paste.

IS had a tiresome system and an annoying habit of curious rejections. I have no problem with this, but I won't waste my time keywording for a Getty company unecessarily.

All the best

OK - what do you think about the Uruguayan handball in the last minute. Was he cheating or playing within the laws of the game - you handball it on the goal line, you will get sent off and miss the next game.

I'd have done exactly the same as he did, although it is very bad luck for Ghana.

Germany v Argentina this afternoon, that will be brutal. Hard to call.

Well done the Netherlands.

The Oldhand method...

All images are keyworded to the best of my ability and uploaded everywhere, except...Istock.

The reason is simple, their disambiguation system. I have 20 upload slots per week, say 25 relevant keywords per image, total 500 keywords specifically for IS.

Now the problem, my acceptance rate. IS are picky, no problem with that, and I'll only get 10 accepted. That's 250 wasted keywords in my book!

What I have found most effective is to submit 20 pics with the minimum of keywords. Say it's a newlywed couple on a beach. "newlywed, couple, married, beach, man, woman, horizontal".. That will do for now.
One week later they reject it - no problem.
One week later it's accepted, now it's worth my time so I'll add, "two young people, 25-30, caucasian, near, daylight, looking at camera, smiling, cheerful, embrace, hugging, seaside, seashore, wedding dress, bride, groom" - etc, etc.
As a result to get the 10 images online I have added 250 keywords rather than 500, that section of my work cut in half. If I had a 90+ acceptance rate things would be different, but it's not going to happen. It's not spam and speeds up my workflow.

Works for me

Somethings remain inevitable - normally disappointment. The disallowed English goal would have changed things, however we lost through shoddy schoolboy defending and lack of firepower up front.

A couple of players can hold their heads high, but not many... Argentina would have destroyed us as well. I'll tip Germany to beat them and Maradona to beat up the referee.

No more excuses for afternoon's off work now we are out.

See you in four years

Upload in bulk!
And get rejected in bulk.

Not guilty. 123 have been consisent with my reviews, and I'll get 95% acceptance. Rejects will be for similar images...

I say upload in bulk as in get a large portfolio and have all your best pics faved - this seems to help.

Oldhand, - who more likely than not gets rejected in bulk as IS with his far from bulky 20 uploads a week.

Very steady - between 50-100$ per month with portfolio of 3000+.

For the last six months 75-100$

Upload in bulk!

England against Germany, the French surrendering without a fight and the USA late to the party!

No plane of shame for England - I'm eager to see tonight's match to see if we end up playing the Germans on Sunday.

Well done USA, and man of the tournament so far, Mr. Donavan. Made me laugh to see Bill Clinton watching, he knows a think or two about scoring!

Oh dear yet again - a point earned agaist the Algerians, leaving a win necessary against Slovenia next Wednesday. If the US can beat the Algerians that's England and the US through.

In the interests, however, of special friendships across the pond, the US would deserve their place on current performance. For me Landon Donovan has been a star.

Problem now is that the second place in Germany's group play first place in England and the USA's. Let's say the Germans finish second, for me that's a good reason not to finish first and avoid them. They have a habit of coming good.

Will that man Capello please play Joe Cole and tell Steven Gerrard he is a millionaire, so should be able to play on the wing as well as centre of the pitch.

Well done to the Algerians (and Slovenians).

Look like France are heading home - England need a win tonight to avoid the Germans in the next round. Argentina are playing attractive football, and the Spanish flatter to deceive.

I hope the US quailify....

All I see in the Uk papers is a picture of a South African soccer ball at the top of most pages in the colors of the flag.

Someone must be earning good money.

Happy birthday Fabio Capello!

The microstock bubble has quietly burst. If you have a mature portfolio and your earnings peaked in March you may never see those sort of numbers again. We'll have to wait for Sept/Oct/Nov to find out though.
+1

Now why, when I checked my stats, was I not surprised mine peaked in March with a mature potfolio!

I concur with Madelaides obervations about new images at IS - very poor sales initially.

Postitive observations welcome on a postcard..

Pretty much concurs with my current thinking.

I am unfortunately not savvy with web bogging, traffic, etc, etc. I take pictures people want. They are becoming increasingly difficult to market, and for me there will be a cut off point where I return to alternative employment, leaving the full time macro and micro world behind.

I think this may be sooner than later.

There are a steady stream of hints at the moment, but nothing concrete anyone has been also to expand upon.

No one would leave their pics on a site for free, so there is always going to be a financial incentive for people to upload to micro's.

Anyone care to enlighten us motals futher?

The Dutch would have a good chance, if they ever perfomed as a team! You should have won it in Cruyff's day. The Portuguese are an outside bet, but I'd rather they didn't because of Ronaldo's presence.

Agrentina have class, but a very poor manger, while Brazil have the strength and depth to go all the way.

Given England will at some point lose on penalty's, in my ideal world we'll have another repeat of the European championships where Denmark and Greece won in the past. I'd like a rank outsider, preferably from Africa itself.

One major obstacle will be the Germans (again).

The Irish would never have won it, but would have drunk more beer per fan.

Yes - the England vote was mine, we can all dream..

I would have been supporting Ireland, had a certain handball incident not happened in Paris.

Anyone know the name of an English football team with a Scottish football name who play in Irish colours with a Welsh emblem?

Apologies to everyone else around the world who won't have a clue what I'm talking about.

StockXpert.com / Re: Thinkstock earnings posted
« on: June 09, 2010, 09:10 »
Hello, before anyone chips in with +3!

Point taken, undermining, undercutting and bad business.

I should have clarified things a bit. I used StockXpert for illustrations, which paid reasonably. It's not my main forte however, and they weren't sold elsewhere en masse. They were just one outlet for pics of a certain nature.

StockXpert has migrated over a couple of thousand to TS, and fair play. In the great scheme of things it's a bad move for microstock in general, but for me it's an outlet for pics I didn't send elsewhere as it would cause havoc with my rejection rates and be a waste of time.

Alamy asked me onboard at the start with scanned slides of 18mb. I passed as they were competing in the same market. Now they are dominant, and me a humble mortal.

All extra money is good, especially for minimal effort.

Postitive plus points taken however
