StockFresh / Re: What????
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:59 »
I have some good feelings about Stockfresh!  I've had my share of questionable rejections but they've re-reviewed my submittions and have proven to me that they are thorough with reviews.  The reviewers explained the issues my rejects had and this made me realize that I have a calibration issue with my monitor and I didn't see the flaws in those rejects.

Once Stockfresh starts their marketing campaign I believe it will be a winning situation for all involved!

StockFresh / Re: Rejections in StockFresh
« on: January 31, 2011, 08:55 »
Stockfresh is pickier than the other sites I submit to.  They are pickier than Istock (When I was submitting images there!)  I'm not against pickyness but I believe some of the rejections being handed out is overkill considering this is Microstock and that a majority of the images will most likely be used in electronic media.  Print media is even more forgiving in regards to a images quality usage than alot of the rejection reasons currently given.  I just started submitting my catalog to them but I have a feeling that a majority of my images won't pass their bar!  :-\

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia cuts commissions again
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:24 »
Fotolia has become a distant 4th for me. Coupled with bizarre and inconsistent rejections, they basically sell the same few images over and over for less and less money. Most of my sales there are becoming subs anyway, so it's rapidly getting to the point where it's not worth the trouble. Just when Istock screws everyone over, Fotolia blows a chance to bring in new contributors and instead plays follow the leader- all the way down, it seems. So far, they are just proving that SS and DT are the only ones with a good chance of using Istock's folly to their advantage. Let's hope they don't do the same thing.

I hope your right but with Microstock being a business the focus is on the buyers first!   If buyers are happy with the product and prices then the business will always find ways to maintain and/or maximize profit.   It's more important now for us contributors to know your worth to this industry and act on it when neccessary!

I just added my feelings about the commission cuts and that I'm not uploading there anymore.  I doubt any of this is going to change the istock strategy but it might make more people aware of what's happening.

So did I !

iStockPhoto.com / Re: A Fable for those considering exclusivity
« on: September 21, 2010, 12:07 »
I think "never put all your eggs in one basket" sums it up more succinctly for me.  I would never feel comfortable only being able to sell RF with one site, as they have too much power and then they get greedy.

I feel the same way!   As a contributor it makes better business sense for me to not go exclusive because there isn't one company I see me being able to earn more than what I do earn from multiple sites.  I'm following the same principles of investing in real stock by diversification.  These Microstock agencies futures are still too uncertain for me to just settle with one!

I feel like the Morlocks in THE TIME MACHINE (HG Wells) marching to be eaten by those underground beasts, or do I have it backwards??

Chad
Yeah I think the Morlocks were (will be?) the underground beasts, can't remember what the name of the food guys was!

They were called "tender vittles"!

Veer is a slow earner for me but when I get a sale it seems to make up for the inactivity at that site.   I've had a few files sell there for $30+!  Just recieved a payout and I have a portfolio there with less than 250 images.

Wish they could review files as fast as the other sites!

I do want this site to become a main player!

Don't process a jpeg image cause each generation of the file will degrade more.  If you shoot in jpeg then convert the file to tif and process that.  When finished then save a copy as a jpeg.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: New iStockphoto web design - IT'S LIVE!
« on: August 10, 2010, 07:21 »
This new layout is a bit easier to navigate than the last layout.  I hated the last layout cause it took too long to find information that wasn't visible on the first page!

Hopefully the buyer experience is much improved.

Video can be effective as a design element (web site masthead) that won't slow the process of recieving the information you seek.

As video banks increase they might become more of a resource for online training material!

Just completed it!  Really curious to see the final results and if Fotolia acts on the suggestions.

I like PBC!   Will be uploading some more designs soon.

The answer the OP's question is going to be as varied as the amount of folks posting!    There is no right or wrong answer, just what fits a persons personal lifestyle and motivation.  I personally would need to make more to trade in my current employment with benefits.  I work as a graphic designer and do this type of work on the side as well.  I actually include stock photography within my side business structure!  Stock photography isn't stable enough for me at the moment (for a number of reasons that I can control and have no control over!) to rely on it as my main source of income.  Maybe some time in the future!  I would love for that to happen!  I love the fact that being a stock contributor allows you to make residual income. Income were you only need to set up a structure one time to constantly generate sales.

42
Not enough to go full time but would be great residual income!

Some folks are probably just downloading it for the art and printing it to hang istead of paying fine art prices.

Veer / Re: 9 sales today at Veer
« on: March 23, 2010, 07:45 »
March actually gave me a spark in sales. The amount of images being sold is low but when I average out the income from each sale it equals to more than $5.00!  :)  I still have a miniscule sized portfolio there of only 198 files!
I hope this site does well!

Transfered my final payout from Paypal today!

Two $.30 sub sales.    Most of my files haven't registered any views!

If the buyer is a one man band then they'd most probably shop around depending how important the budget is, it's no different to you shopping for something on the internet.

If they're part of a large company they would most certainly buy at one maybe two sites as that's where the company will have the accounts.

Yep!  With account holders, they will shop around after their account is up if they feel the need!

50
Well, microstock agencies spoiled these buyers with extremely cheap prices.  There was never a need for such cheap prices, but that's what they enjoyed and got used to.

For most commercial uses prices are still absurdly cheap relative to the costs of the projects they are to be used for. If the image was wanted for purely private or non-commercial use though, say a one-off personalised greetings card for example, then the images are getting quite expensive.

The way I see it is that it's human nature and basic business for buyers to want quality for less!    It's the same way as clients wanting to pay the cheapest price for a quality service and still demand top dollar service!   It might be too late now but going forward I believe us contributors should seriously consider the value of our work and submit images to the various agencies where you can acquire a fair return! Exam.:  I can create elaborate vectors but don't have any in my portfolios for microstock!    My photographic work is suitable for microstock but as my skill level increases I will submit those images to other markets that pay better!
